Fusion is current technology. It is what occurs in a hydrogen bomb. It just can't be controlled like fission at the moment.
Yeah, once you get into relativity, though, you're still not creating energy. You're converting mass into energy, or perhaps it was already energy that somehow had mass. It's kinda fuzzy at that level.
