Hallelujah! The Bush nightmare is over. The dark night of American fascism is giving way to the dawn of hope, the Age of Obama. The forces of truth will once again prevail and the crypto-Nazis will be banished to their caves.
That pretty much captures a large segment of current liberal conventional wisdom on both sides of the Atlantic.

Over the course of his presidency, President George W. Bush and his supporters have been called fascists and Nazis thousands of times in books, articles, documentaries and by legions of poster-wielding 'progressive' youths with open-toed shoes and closed minds.

Of course, this shouldn't surprise anyone. For more than 70 years the Left has hurled the F-word at anyone who gets in its way - Stalin invented this tactic to de-legitimise socialist opponents, including Leon Trotsky, assassinated for leading a 'fascist coup'.

As early as 1946, George Orwell wrote that: 'The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies "something not desirable".'
Today, a better working definition of a fascist might simply be a conservative who's winning an argument. But what if fascism means something more than 'bad'. What if fascism was not, and is not, a Right-wing phenomenon at all?

For instance, what were the motivating passions of fascism? For starters, there was the cult of unity. The Nazis mastered the spectacle of the crowd to project an aura of unity, equality and common purpose. Submitting yourself to the movement was sold as a cleansing, redemptive, fundamentally spiritual experience.

Such spectacles were made possible by the cult of personality, the faith that a great leader would rise from among 'us' and bring everyone together. Well, where have we recently seen enormous rallies of ecstatic followers?

Conventional wisdom...and history...show us, in no uncertain terms, that fascism and right-wing ideology go hand in hand.

I stopped reading there because its proof the writer is a moron. Most people haven't even heard of the book - how the fuck is it going to "divide" a country?

I love how fascism is always connected to "the right".

What the hell does fascism have to do with limited government? With freedom of speech? With freedom of religion? With personal responsibility and freedom?

Absolutely nothing. And yet we are supposed to believe that fascism is the right going to extremes. No the right going to extremes is anarchy. Its not totalitarianism because thats completely contrary to the right.

Fascism has become yet another linguistic victim of immature 'activists' seeking to use a word that invokes negative emotions to describe their opponents. Much like 'Nazi,' the word 'fascist' might be 'ass' for all the meaning it has left.

The real meaning of fascism is a government imposed economic system in which all the means of production are privately owned and publicly controlled...kind of like what ruined the banks when the Community Organization Act came into play and what will further ruin the American auto industry when congress hands them a bailout on the condition that congress designs the cars.

More right wing propaganda aimed at taking away government's clearly superior ability to run private enterprise! An individual is only one, government is conveneiantly located and can do the work for us. Private enterprise is a hinderance! Limiting freedom of whatever helps write a rulebook, by which we can all be assured that our publicly elected officials can oversee our activities and look out for our best interests.

It's what we wanted isn't it? I mean... hell.... when we go to the voting booth, we elect Democrats and Republicans, we pay no attention to the only serious political party that represents the freedoms you all refer to and then we wonder why the fuck our ability to make our own decisions are being taken away!

What will we do about it? Go back to the polls and elect more Democrats and Republicans!

You bitch and moan about the "gubmint runnin' our lives" but by God if a same gender couples wants to enjoy the same rights, responsibilities and privileges traditional couples enjoy, the gubmint HAS to jump in with both feet to prevent it. I'm of the opinion that the whole government taking control of marriage, issuing marriage licenses, controlling who gets divorced, and pretty much cutting the church out of it altogether is just another case of 'seemed like a good idea at the time,' which has now made a mockery of the single most ancient religious tradition since prayer.

The only interest government has regarding marriage is the contractual relationship it establishes between the individuals involved...Child custody and rearing, division of property and benefits in case of dissolution, divorce or death...things like that. The gender of the individuals involved has NO bearing on these issues.

Its really not that difficult to understand.

Yes there is.

You can keep saying its hypocritical all you want. That doesnt change the fact that recognizing a "gay marriage" will increase the power government has in the lives of people. It doesnt change the fact that government would have power in the lives of more people than it currently has.

But then that's the whole point of it isnt it? So the government has power? To persecute those who stand for morality by empowering government to recognize perversion.

No this is merely another method to strip power from the people and attack good decent people in the name of "equality".
