    Default Med-big game rifle?

Over the weekend I had the chance to shoot a .400 double-barrel rifle thing...shot the 450/400 Nitro express rounds, and a .300 MAG. I'm hooked now - and think in addition to my M4, I'd like an honest good hunting rifle w/o breaking the bank. That .300 Mag was VERY appealing to me - the $2000 price tag for the rifle, however was not.

    Any suggestions?

You cant go wrong with a Remington 700. I personally prefer .308 or .300 Win Mag.

Depends on what you want to hunt.

Here in the south..Deer...30-30, 30-06 or 12 gauge with 00 buck work just fine. Turkey...12 gauge....

I have a new (inherited) 7mm mag that really is not usable here, great for out west big game long shots, but not here.

I've got a 12 ga - never thought of hunting deer with it!

We're fixin' to have a pig-hunt, and I'd like something capable (my 5.56 'could' - but i don't want to take chances). But I'd also want something for bigger game like Big deer and maybe bear some day.

I personally stay with military calibers because the ammo will always be available. Thats why I suggest 7.62 or 308.

Check the Alabama DNR site..here in Ga they dictate min cal for specific game.

I did hunt deer on Rucker yrs ago an I think back then you could only use a shot gun..I don't really remember though. I know Ohio used to be shot gun only for deer. Don't know if it's still like that or not.

    thanks folks -

I think I'm set for 300 Mag after shooting one over the weekend.

I found a Mossberg 4X4 300 MAG at bud's for less than $500. Any opinions on Mossberg quality?

Going to look at this tomorrow:

Winchester 30-06 Model 70 (1978), bolt action, W/Recoil Pad, good condition, list $375 Gun Digest, asking $275 OBO.

    Thoughts?

It would be nice to know how many rds have been fired..The rifling could be worn out.

Take this with a grain of salt....On Mossberg quality..I have a Mos 16ga that's over 58yrs old. Still works great.

Thanks! This gun is being sold by an O6 Cdr-type...so i'm pretty sure he wouldn't try and jack me nonetheless. I'll bring an experience long-rifle guy with me to take a look-see.
