Default Global warming: Is it for real?

An Associated Press story this morning reports that fewer Americans believe that global warming is happening, while at the same time, there has been mounting scientific evidence of climate change -- from melting ice caps to the world's oceans hitting the highest monthly recorded temperatures this summer.

Just 57 percent think there is solid evidence that the world is getting warmer, down 20 points in three years, a new poll says. And the share of people who believe pollution caused by humans is causing temperatures to rise also has taken a dip (hello, Proud Loony?).

The poll was released a day after 18 scientific organizations wrote Congress to reaffirm the consensus behind global warming. A federal government report yesterday found that global warming is upsetting the Arctic's thermostat.

Andrew Weaver, a professor of climate analysis at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said politics could be drowning out scientific awareness.

"It's a combination of poor communication by scientists, a lousy summer in the eastern United States, people mixing up weather and climate and a full-court press by public-relations firms and lobby groups trying to instill a sense of uncertainty and confusion in the public."

Political breakdowns in the survey underscore how tough it could be to enact a law limiting pollution emissions blamed for warming. While three-quarters of Democrats believe the evidence is solid, and nearly half believe the problem is serious, far fewer conservative and moderate Democrats see the problem as grave. Fifty-seven percent of Republicans say there is no solid evidence, up from 31 percent in 2007.

Though there are exceptions, the vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is occurring and that the primary cause is a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal.

Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told a business group meeting at the White House yesterday: "The science is pretty clear that the climate challenge before us is very real."

For those that desire legislative policy in respect to "climate change", what exactly is climate change?

When in earth's history has the climate not changed?

Americans aren't nearly as dumb as Gore or Obama think, not 'then' or now:

Increased Number Think Global Warming Is “Exaggerated”
Most believe global warming is happening, but urgency has stalled

    by Lydia Saad
PRINCETON, NJ -- Although a majority of Americans believe the seriousness of global warming is either correctly portrayed in the news or underestimated, a record-high 41% now say it is exaggerated. This represents the highest level of public skepticism about mainstream reporting on global warming seen in more than a decade of Gallup polling on the subject...

Poll: Fewer Americans believe in Global Warming
    By Jason Lomberg, Technical Editor
    Ecnmag.com - October 23, 2009

The percentage of Americans who believe in “global warming” took a nosedive in the last year. According to a Pew Research poll, 57% of those surveyed feel the Earth is warming—a sharp decline from a year ago (77%). Just over a third (36%) attribute it to “human activity”, and politically, just 53% of independents (down from 71%) see solid evidence of global warming.

An increasing number of people are questioning the science behind global warming (or “climate change,” to cite the preferred term). The shift from “global warming” to “climate change”, alone, underscores the fact that alarmists are losing the public debate. This is particularly disturbing in light of the fact that the Obama administration has indicated its willingness to sign onto national and international cap-and-trade legislation.

The respondents' attitude towards cap-and-trade was illuminating. 50% of those surveyed favored cap-and-trade, while 39% were opposed. But among those who know “a lot” about cap-and-trade, 64% are opposed, and just 32% support it. The evidence is clear—the more one learns about cap-and-trade, the more they oppose it. 55% of respondents knew nothing about the issue.

In a dual blow to alarmists, a study in Science posits an “accounting error” in the way greenhouse gases are calculated. The study claims that biofuels actually emit more carbon dioxide than burning gasoline. The Kyoto Protocol, and similar pieces of legislation, fails to account for the source of the fuel. As TG Daily points out, “existing forests are cleared to make room for the [biofuel] crops which absorb less CO2 than the trees they replace.”

From 1977-1998, the Earth underwent a period of global warming, coinciding with the “warm phase” of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Since then, the PDO shifted to its “cool phase,” and the Earth has actually been cooling. You’d expect the same alarmists to demand immediate action on “global cooling,” but such an assertion wouldn’t imply an indictment of industry. The silence is deafening…

Cant imagine why people who can just see that the global tempature has decreased for the past decades dont believe in global warming.
If we were as industrious to become good as to make ourselves great, we should become really great by being good, and the number of valuable men would be much increased; but it is a grand mistake to think of being great without goodness; and i pronounce it as certain that there was never yet a truly great man that was not at the same time truly virtuous." - Ben Franklin

There is global warming. It's a natural occurance and not one that Gore and his minions can stop. They might be able to slow it down, but that's not going to stop it. Chemicals have prob'ly sped it along, but the earth's been going thru its changing cycles long before man came on the scene......

Of course. Its going to warm until it starts to cool....again! It seems that
has already started..the cooling that is.
What are reparations? Making me pay

If global temperatures are decreasing, why are the polar ice caps melting? According to scientists, they're melting at a faster rate than was anticipated.

The point of the whole debate, GW, is that global warming/climate change has very little evidence that points to a man-made occurrence. What the debate hinges around is those that want to take more of our money to fight a non-controllable event and those that want to do more research to see what is actually causing the planet to change.

    No;

Antarctic Ice Melt at Lowest Levels in Satellite Era

The ice melt across during the Antarctic summer (October-January) of 2008-2009 was the lowest ever recorded in the satellite history.

Such was the finding reported last week by Marco Tedesco and Andrew Monaghan in the journal Geophysical Research Letters:

A 30-year minimum Antarctic snowmelt record occurred during austral summer 2008–2009 according to spaceborne microwave observations for 1980–2009. Strong positive phases of both the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) were recorded during the months leading up to and including the 2008–2009 melt season.

Because they melt every summer. And they freeze every winter. It's something we call seasons.

It is what the earth has been doing for millions of years. Nothing new there. It warms. Then cools. Then warms again. And guess what? It cools once again. So there we have it. A global warming, cooling cycle that has been going on and on and on and on and on and on and on......well, you get the picture.....

Oddly enough, but it sort of reminds me of this topic. It warms up at first. Then all of a sudden, it cools as people get bored with it. And then, once again, somebody, anybody, even a nobody, will hotwire it up and off we go. But wth, sooner or later, the temps will cool yet again.... hmmmmm.....imagine that. Warming and cooling. Cooling and warming. Warcoo......Yeah, a combination of both......

BINGO....you nailed that one. Those funds would be better spent on practical applications, such as setting up bugging devices to record the goings on at the next Bilderberg conference so the public could be made aware of the next rash of malarkey that will be thrown at us.

Its not real, the Democrats support of Cap and Trade proves it, since they don't at the same time support nuclear power. This is just a huge scheme to control more aspects of our lives and depress the economy ever more.
