    Default Web Site

Have any of you created a web site?

I need to, so I'm looking for software. I know it can be done through MS Works and there is free software available on the net. I don't need many bells an whistles, a nice clean simple but interesting layout will do. 5-6 pages should do.

A lot of providers have their own software that makes it easy for you. I use startlogic.com, and got my business site (5 pp) going in a few hours.

It all depends on how serious you are about the site and how much time and $ you're willing to invest. There are many places out there that will allow you to create a site almost instantly and host with them for free, but your site will look cheesy, and since the hosting is free they will put ads on your site.

You can try MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver 4 for designing your own page, which if you want a fairly simple layout, both are easy to use - even for beginners.

Alternatively, you can create a site using template scripts, which is basically what this board is. You upload the software, run the installation, and now you have a site that you configure. There's a script out there for ANY type of site you are looking to create. While this is an easy route, and can be the best choice depending on the quality of the script - you generally have to pay for the better scripts.

Can ya give me an idea on what you're looking to do and we can assist better?

Glock...will you pm your site address, I'd like to look at it.

I looked at the site but can't tell much about the end result unless I buy a package.

I cannot stress this enough - ALWAYS do a bit of background checking on any provider you are interested in hosting a website with. While one person may have an outstanding experience, there might be 10 others who have had issues.

You can visit "review" sites about hosting providers, but almost every one of them gets commission for their "top 10 lists" and who they send their visitors to. Your best bet for doing background is straight from the users themselves, through a community forum of clients and hosts. The best out there is WHT - http://www.webhostingtalk.com - they have over 5 million posts there, and they lost many, many months of data due to a failure last year or early this year, probably losing in the hundreds of thousands of additional posts.

While pretty much no provider will have nothing but glowing reviews, because it's hard to please every single client, it's a good overall way of looking at past clients and current clients reviews of a provider.

I did a search there for startlogic and these were the reviews in particular that stood out to me (and there were VERY minimal positive reviews to match these.

Can you code? Coffecup is free and an excellent coding program even for beginners. I used this one in my XHTML/HTML Class

Thanks, Jim! I'm only 3 days into my research/investigation mode. It doesn't look like that site would be the best.

I've used them for three years now and have had a good experience. Granted my site is relatively tiny. I've use their telephone support twice and that was very good both times. For $6/ month frankly I was surprised that they even picked up the phone.
