LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A Louisville native is planning to walk 5,000 miles across America to raise awareness for military families.

Troy Yocum is a 30-year-old Iraq veteran. He was looking for a way to generate funds to help other veterans in need.

Six months ago, he decided to start his Drum Hike campaign that is expected to last about 16 months.

Yocum is getting political officials to sign a special Louisville Slugger bat in every city he visits.

He is presenting the bat to lawmakers in Washington at the end of his journey.

"I thought, 'I have to do something to help these people,'" Yocum said. "I thought, 'When I am done with my military career, I can sacrifice another 16 months of my life and spread awareness,' and what better way than to walk across America?"

Yocum plans to leave this Saturday from the Louisville Slugger Museum.

Great timing - this is "Month of the Military Child".
“… the greatest detractor from high performance is fear: fear that you are not prepared, fear that you are in over your head, fear that you are not worthy, and ultimately, fear of failure. If you can eliminate that fear—not through arrogance or just wishing difficulties away, but through hard work and preparation—you will put yourself in an incredibly powerful position to take on the challenges you face" - Pete Carroll.
