Default woman shooting trap, what gun should I buy?

I am starting to shoot trap and am going to look for a gun this weekend. What kind of gun would you suggest? I usually use my husband's 12 gauge but it has too much of a kick. Should I get a semi-automatic?

I've shot competitively but not trap. I have a single shot12ga that'll knock yer shoulder off and another 12ga semi that's gentle as can be.

I'd use a few different gauges if you can before you buy.

I agree with MM. Get a 20 gauge dbl bbl and a good set of chokes.

Thanks for the responses. I'm writing this all down and taking it gun shopping with me. We're heading for Cabela's tomorrow.

I would suggest going out and trying some different guns before buying one. Guys out at the range won't mind letting a lady using their gear to test it out.

A semi-auto 12ga will have reduced recoil. There are also stocks that reduce recoil with piston and spring systems.

My 15 year old daughter loves my 12ga pump shotgun. I put a tactical stock on it so we can adjust the length of pull difference between us and I put on a recoil reducing stock. She hasn't tried the new stock yet.

I bought a Benelli semi auto 12 gauge. I absolutely love it. Not much kick at all. I got 14 out of 25 clays my first time shooting!

Excellent! Semi-auto is the way to go; good choice.

If you can eliminate that fear—not through arrogance or just wishing difficulties away, but through hard work and preparation—you will put yourself in an incredibly powerful position to take on the challenges you face" - Pete Carroll.
