If Freckles is killing just for the fun of it then perhaps it's time to send him to the next stop in his journey. If he's running with your other dogs I'd be worried about one or two of them joining in his fun and then you'd have a larger problem. Good luck Cat.

Well, if he's not killing for food, or to defend himself, then why do you think he is killing the other animals?

When I kill something it usually is to protect something else....but at no time was it ever fun.

He's the alpha dog in a pack of 11..IT'S NORMAL.
This is not, from what I've read, yer family pet thing.

CS, if the dog kills possums just because he feels like it, I expect he killed the feral cat for the same reason. I don't really believe he did it to defend himself.

I am a huge animal lover, I volunteer at shelters, send money, and have fostered orphaned kittens in my home. However, I would not keep a dog that I could not trust.

I have a relative whose dog bit 4 different children in the head/face, including their two children, and my daughter when she was about 18 months old. When we went to get her wound treated (right by her ear) the doctor said had it been a teensy bit closer to the ear, she would have lost her hearing in that ear. The doctor reported the bite (as req'd by law), and they ended up putting the dog down. I wholeheartedly approved.

As I know you know, with so many nice animals out there who desperately need a home, why keep one who's that vicious? I would give another a chance instead.

I agree totally with you, abbey. You said something here that reminded me of my lifelong attitude towards pets, especially potentially dangerous ones. There simply must be a high level of trust or that pet will be surrendered to the ASPCA and hopefully find a more appropriate home. All of my pets for the last 45 years have been rescued pets.

There is a dog who has lived hear for over four years. We
were only able to catch him last summer when he got bitten
by a snake at which time he was fixed, vaccinated etc.

He has been lethal to possoms.

Two feral cats who had been through the feral cat program
and could not be released where they were trapped. They
escaped the holding pen and the dog has killed one of them

I am actually considering having him destroyed. I now have
do doubt that he would kill any other cat if it got out of the
house. This is no place for a cat killer.

The only option I see is a wire muzzle. Can they wear them all the time?????

I am so distressed. I dont know if the other feral cat is
still in the vicinity and if I find him dead Freckles will have
sealed his fate!

There is a dog proof feeding station set up and water at the
edge of the woods. I HATE this.

Sound like you have a winner. Do you know what feral cats feed on? Game birds like quail, pheasants and other birds. Cats should be kept in the house.

My dogs used to play tug-of-war with cats that came in the yard if they could catch them. You could hear the cats bones breaking and crunching as the dogs played. Its just the nature of dogs to go after cats unless they have been raised with cats around.

Either way they'll make more dogs and they'll make more cats. I wouldn't worry about it much unless the dog goes after people.
