Roy Rogers' Dead Horse Up For Auction

MYFOXNY.COM - The former belongings of movie star Roy Rogers are going to be auctioned in New York. The auction includes the preserved remains of his famous horse, Trigger.

Roy Rogers and Trigger were one of America's most recognizable duos. Trigger reached legendary status and is one of the most memorable Hollywood animals.

The 15-hand-high horse died in 1965 at the age of 30. Rogers didn't want to bury him so he decided to have Trigger preserved via taxidermy and mounted in his rearing position on two legs and put on display at the Roy Rogers - Dale Evans Museum.

The museum has closed and many items from the collection are at auction. It will take place over two days next week at Christie's in Manhattan.

The Christie's presale estimate for Trigger is $100,000 to $200,000. Rogers paid $2,500 for the horse in 1938.

Remains of several other horses are also included in the auction. They are Buttermilk and Trigger Jr.

Rogers' 1964 Bonneville convertible is also in the auction. It's estimated at $100,000 to $150,000.

It has old 6-shooters attached to several places. A note on the Christie's Web site notes that the firearms are inoperable.

I had a Palomino gelding that was rode in parades. I never rode him in the parade but he was part of a "mounted posse" group and he shined up well....but I've never seen another Palomino as beautiful as Trigger or moved so elegantly.

I'll bet Trigger got as much makeup as anyone else...

I went to the Roy Rogers - Dale Evans museum when I was about 15-16 years old. It was somewhere near Victorville, CA. I was actually going to see if it was still open the next time we were going out that way to stop by with our girls basketball team.

They closed, "The Ponderosa" a couple of years ago as well.

Its kind of a shame to see the, "Old West" icons going by the wayside as today's kids grow not knowing who they are. It was a time where men were men and they acted manly.

I have begun introducing, "The Rifleman" to the kids at my church. They absolutely love watching those shows. They just cant wait to watch the next episode on Saturday nights. When they see the opening scene with Chuck Connors rapid firing his rifle they start stomping on the floor and clapping.

We have a short movie or video for folks at church after dinner Saturday nights and then volleyball for an hour or so.

I just bought "The Red Pony" for my grandkids.... great idea about introducing westerns to the kids Crin. My 8 yr old grandson loves good guy vs. bad guy scenarios....and, of course, he's always the good guy!
