Um, that's funny, I remember pumping gas as well. Part of the attendant job at about every gas station in the country that has a full service lane

I still pump gas, every time I fill up at the gas station.

I wonder how long it's been since he drove his own car?

If our POTUS did indeed pump gas in the late 70's, he would have at least had to wash your windshield.

I got an after school job at a local garage pumping gas, fixing flats, and cleaning up in the late 60's which pumped Atlantic Richfield gas. Gas went for 39 cents a gallon for regular in those days so people came in for a couple of bucks of gas mostly.

Atlantic had what they called "red ball service" in those days and would give you a red styrofoam ball to put on your antenna & look cool when you bought their gas. When someone pulled up to the pump you welcomed them, asked how much gas they wanted, (some claimed later they wanted gallons not $'s ??) washed the windshied and sometimes the rear window, asked to check the water, (scalded too many times to count) check the oil, ( 3 qts. low, my late husband just put oil in?) check the tire pressure, (left front has 10 psi & right rear has 38 psi) been driving in circles lately? check the battery, (VW' Beetles with a woman 3 kids, groceries and the battery is under the rear seat)

If you did not ask some 16 year old asking who was buying 50 cents worth of gas with his buddies in the car on a Friday nite or anyone else to perform these checks or perform them that customer got their gas for free and it came out of the employees pocket.

Pumping gas wasn't just pumping gas back in the day.
