Default NY Target workers reject move to unionize

NEW YORK — Retail workers at a Target in Valley Stream, N.Y., late Friday rejected efforts to make their store the first of the chain's 1,750 to be unionized.

A company spokeswoman said early Saturday morning that 137 workers had voted against joining the union, the United Food and Commercial Workers, while 85 workers voted for it, The New York Times reported.

Union President Bruce W. Both said in a prepared statement that the Long Island store workers endured a "campaign of threats, intimidation and illegal acts by Target management," and that the union would contest the results.

"Target did everything they could to deny these workers a chance at the American dream," he said. "However, the workers’ pursuit of a better life and the ability to house and feed their families is proving more powerful. These workers are not backing down from this fight. They are demanding another election. They are demanding a fair election. They are demanding justice and they are prepared to fight for it."

Good news. Nice to hear about union losses. The union thugs will make sure to increase their threats and intimidation next time.

At least the workers and company knew of the activity and had a vote. Card Check doesn't allow for that:

Card check primer: The union label

    Monday, June 13, 2011

Imagine finding out without notice that one's workplace has been unionized, forcing union dues on all employees -- much to the surprise and dismay of those who want no part of it.

Welcome to the union trap commonly referred to as "card check."

More than a few teachers at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School say they were never informed about unionization and not asked to vote before the American Federation of Teachers stepped in.

"A number of employees were not approached at all and found out, quite by accident, that a union had been formed without our input," writes one teacher.

    ...

Detroit's Federation of Teachers prez Keith Johnson points out in a newsletter that as more charter schools are forced to swallow union wages, benefits and other poisons, "many of them will dry up because they will not be as profitable, thus not as appealing to those seeking to authorize them."

So, if you can't beat 'em, organize 'em and force 'em out of business? This is union thuggery at its worst.

Union bosses are determined this will be the last time a fair and open election will be held

Next time the vote will be like a WWE wrestling match. The outcome will be determined long before the actual event is held
