    Has anyone seen it yet?

If Cecil B. DeMille were alive today and given the chance to direct a special effects-laden fantasy adventure on Mars, he might have made something similar to Andrew Stanton’s visually stunning epic “John Carter.”Carter may be new to the cinema but is actually based off a century-old series of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (“Tarzan”), particularly “A Princess of Mars,” without which we wouldn’t have classic science fiction books by Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke or films like “Star Wars” and “Avatar.” John Carter was first and he’s just now making a welcome, if a little belated, arrival.

Didn't know it was out. I don't go to theaters so I'll have to wait for the DVD. And hopefully it will be an extended version.

I read the entire Tarzan series. I think I was in grade school then. Probably the only girl to bring those to school.

OK, went and saw John Carter last night.. Have to say it was a very good movie. Excellent special effects, good story line. They combined a few of the books so a lot came at you pretty quick.. The ending could set up for future John Carter films or it could just be an ending (could go either way).

I do hope they decide to make a sequel due to how well they did on this one. I would recommend seeing this movie for the action, effects, and good story line. My kids really enjoyed it and are actively looking for the books..

I saw a 3 minute version, it looks like they've changed the story to something that might be pulled out of the can, but I'll probably still give it a shot anyway.
The music in the trailer sounds like Led Zep "Kashmir".

That seeing the movie has moved your kids to seek out the books, in my mind, makes the movie very successful...

Nothing beats the movie your mind creates while reading a book.

My boys are voracious readers, actually our whole family is. We ALWAYS have lots of books, either library/nook/school library/Barnes & Noble/anywhere we can find them.

My oldest was reading in his dorm room and a couple of kids asked what he was studying and he said he wasn't, they asked why he was reading and he replied because he enjoyed it. They were literally dumb struck as to why someone would read for fun....

My middle school student has a weekly book report and it has to be in his "lexile" (some measurement of reading comprehension). His is college level and has a hard time finding anything for himself. His teacher decided to let him use ANY science fiction he can find. Thank God for that, makes it a little easier..

My 9 year old is turning into quite the reader, far better than me already. He's been really into Rick Riordan books lately, maybe I'll turn him on to these if they're in the right age range for him.
