Ugh, huge pet peeve when th quote function gets all discombulated.
But to address your post; I'm curious how you think the ROE's aren't, in fact, an example of American exceptionalism. It is a clusterfuck, no arguments there, but unless we're willing to give no quarter, I don't see how we're to combat them. It seems to me the enemy and friendly look alike.

In sure that tyr will conclude that any afghani who has a weapon should be killed. Bow re reconciles that with his belief that all men have a right to carry weapons would be tought tk get around though.

Of course i may be wrong but then i too wouldbe intersted to know what rules of engagement tyr would implement

Beats the shit out of me. I thought the default ROE is always don't fire until fired upon. But I think he, like many, are frustrated by the apparent lack of a tangible goal. What is victory in a-Stan? I'm reminded of the ack ack's father from one crazy summer,"Without a goal, there's no plan. Without a plan, there's no attack. Without an attack, no victory."

As a rule no that isnt the standard roe. Generally on the battlefield troops are given leave to fire first if the threat is serious enough. That of course changes drastically when there are civilians around. And like it or not our soldiers know the risks goingnin and accept those risks

I'm just a civilian, but I thought the roe I gave would be the most conservative. I'm not saying the soldiers should be given free reign, discipline is a virtue; but what I'm saying is there's no clear goal. They're just over there waiting to get shot at it seems to me. I am curious though, how is it, really?

I don't have first hand knowledge of how it is over there. I can only speak to in general. Iraq , I could speak to first hand, but those were different circumstances.

I think that's telling right there. We DON'T know how things really are over there. Not that the media can be trusted to keep from spinning things, but I sure don't hear from a lot of journalists on the ground. What's the hold up? Why are we still there? In real terms please.

A nutcase will do nutty things.
