15 technologies of today we'll still be using in 2030

Back when I was growing up in the 1970s, we fully expected that, by 2012, we’d all be driving flying cars to our condos on the moon where robotic butlers awaited, ready to bring us the cure for cancer from the bathroom first-aid kit

How’s all of that working out? Sure, we now have faster, smaller computers, smartphones that talk back to you and smart TVs, but in so many areas of technology the pace of change is slower than Windows Vista booting off a floppy disk.

A few months ago, I wrote an article about 15 technologies that will be gone by the time my infant son is old enough to use them. However, barring a zombie apocalypse, there are plenty of mainstays that my son will still be using when he enters college in 2030.

Have to disagree with USB, Thunder Bolt is going to tear it apart, and not before time. First gen thunderbolt is currently running two-way 10 gig channels, that can be chained to multiple outputs, while running half a dozen other technologies through them using 'smart' cables (the cables themselves can have software updates to add extra features...)

Sure a thunderbolt cable by itself cost $50 atm, and all the third party peripherals are for professionals, at a pro price, but they will come tumbling down, as will USB technology.

Edit - ^What??? There is everything wrong with Vista, easily the worst OS i've ever had to use, and that was only because of school, constant problems, how people do professional work, in important jobs, running Vista i have no idea.

I had vista on my old computer...I'm giving it to my daughter to use for school. I never really had a problem with it...but I really didn't use it for much either.

Anyone read the link to the things predicted that we wont have in 2030? Kind of interesting. Movie theatres being one. Remote control's being another.

I know Noir is right about the Vista thing. As someone who has been servicing computers and peripherals for about 20 years, that is by far the shittiest OS I have ever come across. Windows ME might have been as bad, but that was only on the market for like 3 days! LOL

The Thunderbolt is going to be interesting. The technology is definitely better than USB, but how long before they make it faster than 10Gbps? It's double that of the USB 3.0, and with dual channels, so in theory it'll destroy USB. But how long before USB completely disappears is yet to be seen. But by the time it completely takes USB off of the table, something else will be coming out to make Thunderbolt irrelevant. Good for us!

When they placed it on a table and turned it on, it produced a hologram type of "screen" in the air above it, in which the user was able to "touch" this screen/hologram and interact with it. Now THAT would be awesome!

Most enterprise installations jumped from XP to 7 . Vista is to operating systems what the 260Z was to Datsun Z Cars: A transitional flop demanding a quick new release to save the product line.

Vista is a great running joke. One joke I remember from a situation comedy is "You have fewer positive qualities than Vista!"
