Default Katie Couric's 'Eating Disorders' Mirror My Own

More of a 'wave' than real.

We're both beyond the age of eating disorders. Both are saying that the tendencies were there, but wasn't acceptable. Both coped. Now exceptions are made for the same problems. BTW, Katie and I are still alive, some of those that came after, given excuses?

Katie Couric opens up about battling bulimia

</abbr></cite>NEW YORK (AP) — Viewers of Katie Couric's talk show were doubtless surprised on Monday when, during the discussion of eating disorders, Couric disclosed that she had had her own struggles with that cruel, sometimes deadly condition.

"I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," she said, describing the guilt she felt at eating a single cookie or chewing a stick of gum that wasn't sugar-free.

But the bulk of the show was devoted to her guests, who included experts on the subject as well as its sufferers, notably singer and new "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato.

During the hour, Couric said little more about her experience, which she had never before made public.

"I kind of hesitated to even bring it up," she told The Associated Press after the taping. "But I felt that if I expect people on my show to be honest, then, when relevant, I owe it to people watching to be honest myself.

"I wanted to focus on my guests," she said, "while acknowledging one of the reasons this issue is so important to me: I went through it."...

Bottom line, eating disorders of a serious nature need medical intervention. However, they are not an excuse of out of control behavior in other realms.

I deal with eating disorders on a daily basis. One of the biggest problems facing adolescent females is body image. There is such an emphasis in the media with being thin. Look on TV, movies and magazines, and pretty much every woman is pressured to be thin. Plus there is a lot of cruelty in school about "being fat."
I've heard of parents specifically request that their daughters not be fed lunch because they are "too fat." Other girls will hide in the halls or outside because they don't want to be seen eating. Or they will eat carrots or these "Slim Fast" things.
I personally feel these diet fad products are more dangerous than porn.

Seriously gabby. Sorry to hear you have such a problem, and hope you can overcome it by getting the help you need.
Bringing such a problem to light here IS...the wrong place.
But reading your words above more fully explain WHO you really are, rather than WHO you want the rest of us to believe you are.

If you are dealing with such problems daily. This is not the place to come seeking help. Parents, Doctors, and School counselors are there for a reason. Please use them. Not for any of us. But...for YOU.

I didn't read Gabby's post the way you did. I thought she was talking about having to deal every day with teenagers who have an eating disorder. I didn't think she was saying she, personally, had an eating disorder.

    I could be wrong.

I took it the same way as you.
