    Default Don't take the girl

I know this isn't the music section, but to ME, this is so much more than just music. This song, in just a few short verses, shows how love between a man and a woman changes from when we are little kids to when we get married and have kids. I'm posting the video at the end too.... (my apologies if an ad plays before the song).

Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin'
    He was eight years old.
Little girl came through the front gate
    Holdin' a fishin' pole.
His dad looked down and smiled,
Said, "We can't leave her behind"
"Son, I know you don't want her to go,
But someday you'll change your mind."
    And Johnny said,
    "Take Jimmy Johnson,
    Take Tommy Tompson.
    Take my best friend, Bo.
Take anybody that you want as
    Long as she don't go.
Take any boy in the world,
Daddy please, don't take the girl."

Same old boy, same sweet girl
    Ten years down the road.
He held her tight and kissed her lips in
    Front of the picture show.
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said "If you do what I tell you to,
    There won't be any harm"
And Johnny said "Take my money,
    Take my wallet,
    Take my credit cards.
Here's the watch that my grandpa gave me
Here's the key to my car
    Mister give it a whirl,
But please don't take the girl."

    Same old boy
    Same sweet girl
    Five years down the road
There's gonna be a little one and she
    Says it's time to go.
    Doctor says the baby's fine
    But you'll have to leave
'Cause his momma's fading fast and
Johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
"Take the very breath you gave me.
Take the heart from my chest.
I'll gladly take her place if you'll let me,
    Make this my last request.
Take me out of this world
God, please don't take the girl"

Need I say more?” - Chris Rock

My mom told me once that my dad had the lyrics to the Harry Chapin song "Cats In The Cradle" printed out and kept in his desk at work and at home. Because he wanted to remind himself to never become the father in the song.
I think he did a great job avoiding it.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
    When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then

There's a similar one that I like because it reminds people to stand up to a demanding boss:

There's a little boy out in the driveway
    His basketball in hand
Saying Daddy could we play a little one on one
You pat him on the back and say not now son
    I'm a busy man

His sister's out on the sidewalk
    Setting up a lemonade stand
Hey Daddy don't you want to buy a glass from me
You say maybe later, can't you see I'm a busy man

You got to go, got to run
Hit it hard and get it done
Everyone can see you're going far
    You got responsibilities
A crazy schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
You don't know how right you are
    Busy man

There's a woman in the bedroom crying
Saying I thought we had plans
You say honey I'm sorry I'll make it up
When the job slows down and I'm not such
    A busy man

You got to go, got to run
Hit it hard and get it done
Everyone can see you're going far
    You got responsibilities
A crazy schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
You don't know how right you are
    Busy man

Have you ever seen a headstone with these words
"If only I had spent more time at work"

There's a call one day from the office
They need you down in Birmingham
You say no way, the weekend's mine
I got plans with the kids and a date with my wife
    I'm a busy man

You got to go, got to run
Take a break and have some fun
    Those that love you most
    Say you've come far
    Got some new priorities
In that schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
Now you know how right you are
    Busy man

    Jim,

The first time I heard this song I was on a 1,000 mile road trip to Arizona. Heard it on the radio and cried my eyes out. Called my daughter and tried to explain to her what song I was talking about. She told me who sang it. I stopped at a mall and went inside and bought the CD and listened to that song over and over on my trip.

Like you said ... it's more than just a song. Thanks!

    Great lyrics ..
I have two that impress me a lot.. listed in order of importance to me .-Tyr

"Big River" by Johnny Cash--The Man in Black.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.

Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.

Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

    Lynyrd Skynyrd- Simple Man lyrics

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
    And if you do this
It'll help you some sunny day. Oh Yah!
Oh, take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
You'll find a woman, yea yea, you'll find love,
    And don't forget son,
    There is someone up above.

    (Chorus)

And be a simple, kind of man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man.
Oh, won't you do this for me son,
    If you can?

Forget your lust, for the rich man's gold
All that you need, is in your soul,
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
    Is to be satisfied.

    (Chorus)

Boy, don't you worry... you'll find yourself.
Follow your heart, lord, and nothing else.
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
    Is to be satisfied.

    (Chorus)

Baby be a simple, be a simple man.
Oh be something, you love and understand.
Baby be a simple, kind of man. (Fade out)

Cash's --Big River has to be heard to properly be appreciated for its greatness IMHO. His voice lends magic to the lyrics...
Simple Man lyrics have a greater soothing echo but Big River hits me right in the heart. I actually love Johnny Cash same as if he were my older brother. His death had a very great effect upon me. So much so that it shocked me even..-Tyr

My cousin used to be the living embodiment of the lyrics to "Free Bird." He lived several places and traveled all over the world. Then he met his wife, who turned him into Caged Bird.
Still has "Free Bird" tattooed on his shoulder, though.

He grew up as an unwilling genius, finishing high school in 3 1/2 years and college in 3 years. Traveled to Russia, China, South America and all over the place. Has admitted to doing a great many things he shouldn't have.
While living in St. Louis, he met a woman who was there on business. Connected because both grew up in the Dallas area. Her terms for marriage was that he needed to settle down and stop running all over the place, because she wanted a normal family life. He agreed.
They now live in an affluent Dallas suburb with two kids and a really nice house.
He is happier now that he ever was traveling. I suppose you can change a Free Bird sometimes.

Tyr. Not a coincidence that song is also a favorite of My two, grown son's who now have their own son's.

It became something special we shared with one-another as they grew up, while I spent so much time away at sea, or deployed during the most valuable times of their lives. When I couldn't be around to just hug them, and tell them how proud I was of them.
Thankfully. My wife had to act as both parents, and she did a wonderful, unselfish job few civilian wives would ever try.

Now. When either of us mention "Cat's in the Cradle". There's always a special moment we share, and the Tears....Just the tears!
I love to make Liberals Cry, and Whine.
    So, this is for them.

"Big River" by Johnny Cash--The Man in Black.

    , JUST FOUND THIS..

Here's another one. I've had this song forever, but running my music on shuffle, I just heard it again for the first time in a few years and it brought out a few more tears. Another one that expresses what true love, marriage and friendship is all about. Please forgive me again if you must suffer through an ad. The video is at the bottom, with lyrics, and here they are written... (Kathy Mattea - Where have you been)

Claire had all but given up
When she and Edwin fell in love
She touched his face and shook her head
In disbelief she sighed and said
In many dreams I've held you near
Now at last you're really here

    Where have you been?
I've looked for you for ever and a day
    Where have you been?
I'm just not myself when you're away

He asked her for her hand for life
Then she became a salesman's wife
He was home each night by 8
But one stormy evening he was late
Her frightened tears fell to the floor
Until his key turned in the door

They'd never spent a night apart
For 60 yrs she heard him snore
    Now they're in a hospital
In separate beds on different floors

Claire soon lost her memory, forgot the names of family
She never spoke a word again
Then one day they wheeled him in
He held her hand and stroked her hair
In a fragile voice she said

    Where have you been
Ive looked for you forever and a day
    Where have you been
I'm just not myself when your away
I'm just not myself when your away

Need I say more?” - Chris Rock

Great stuff to remember Tyr. It reminded me of something I found a few weeks ago on YouTube video's/music.

Do you remember, or are you old enough to remember WALTER BRENNAN...from the REAL MCCOYS?
