LAHORE: Police in Pakistan have arrested five men after a village council ordered a father to hand over his nine-year-old daughter as compensation in a rape case, officers said Friday.A group of elders in the remote rural area of Bahalak in Punjab province made the ruling to settle a year-long dispute between a farm worker and an influential local landowner, local police station chief Mohammad Khalid told AFP.
The worker, Arshad, who goes by one name, was accused of involvement in the abduction and rape of landowner Ali Sher’s daughter, Khalid said.
“The jury on Sunday decreed that Arshad would marry (off) his daughter Sidra to Ali Sher’s 22-year old son Maqsood,” he explained.
“Arshad agreed verbally but Sidra, who is too young, remains with her family,” he said.
The marriage was not formally solemnised but the village council made Arshad agree to pay Sher Rs40,000 – a vast sum for a farm labourer in Pakistan – if he did not honour the ruling.
Khalid said Arshad and four council members had been arrested.
The practice of “vani”, giving daughters as compensation to end vendettas, is illegal and punishable by up to seven years in jail.
Pakistan is a deeply conservative country and women, especially in poor rural areas, enjoy few rights and little protection from the police.
Last week a couple in Pakistan-administered Kashmir killed their 15-year-old daughter by dousing her with acid for supposedly shaming the family by looking at two boys.

DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA (Worthy News)– Dozens of Christian worship places have been destroyed by Islamic extremists in Tanzania and church leaders are fleeing its heavily Muslim island of Zanzibar, as the persecution of Christians spreads throughout East Africa, a human rights chief said Monday, November 12. “As of May [about] 25 churches and convents have been destroyed. This destruction is mostly confined to [semi-autonomous] Zanzibar where the population is 99 percent Muslim and openly hostile to Christians,” explained William Stark, regional manager for Africa of advocacy group International Christian Concern (ICC)
In one of the latest just revealed incidents, violence broke out last month after a Muslim boy encouraged a Christian boy to urinate on a Koran, deemed a holy book by Muslims, on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, the capital.

At least 10 people were injured after an explosion ripped through the bus in which they were travelling through the heart of Tel Aviv today.

The bomb blast shattered windows on the bus which was driving along a street running close to Israel's defence headquarters.

Israel's ambulance service said three of the wounded were in a moderate-to-serious condition and there was reportedly a second device but that failed to detonate.

Police cleared the area shortly after the bomb went off and were carrying out investigations on the wreckage of the vehicle.

'A bomb exploded on a bus in central Tel Aviv. This was a terrorist attack. Most of the injured suffered only mild injuries," said Ofir Gendelman, a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a message on Twitter, he said police were combing the area for the person who planted the device, apparently confirming reports that it was not a suicide attack.

Israeli media said a man had been arrested - the last terror attack in Tel Aviv was in 2006.

The bombing happened on the eighth day of an Israeli offensive against the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and threatened to complicate Egyptian-led efforts to secure a ceasefire.

Last night saw heavy Israeli air strikes and sporadic Hamas rocket attacks. Celebratory gunfire rang out in Gaza City when local radio stations reported news of the Tel Aviv explosion

When Israel take action against Gaza, they don't use terrorist tactics. Their targets have military significance .. for example, they go after Hamas leaders. If civilians get caught up in the consequences of such attacks, this is because Hamas personnel make very sure that their deaths and injuries cannot be avoided.

But compare that, to this. THIS is pure terrorism. It wasn't a military action, no military targets were involved. JUST ORDINARY PEOPLE CATCHING A TEL AVIV BUS.

And it was celebrated in Gaza, by savages.

It doesn't end there. The BBC has been going into propagandist overdrive these past several days, concentrating on the casualties on the Gazan side. Indeed ... BBC footage has appeared on this very forum, showing 'injured' Palestinians who are filmed walking around, fully healthy, just minutes later !!

A BBC war reporter made a shocking blunder by tweeting a photograph of an injured child from Syria but indicating she was from Gaza.

Gaza correspondent Jon Donnison added 'Heartbreaking' to the front of a message he retweeted from a Palestinian 'journalist and social activist' named Hazem Balousha.

Balousha had posted a picture of a young girl lying on a hospital bed with bloodied clothes, along with the words 'Pain in #Gaza'.

Donnison's tweet went out to his 7,971 followers on the social networking site and he was soon hit with a barrage of outraged responses highlighting the mistake.

The website bbcwatch.org highlighted the error and wrote: 'Up to now, it may have been possible to put down Jon Donnison’s frquently problematic reporting to a lack of knowledge and understanding of the region.

'However, his decision to promote deliberate misinformation – either knowingly or as a result of a complete failure to check facts – indicates that he is not merely naive.

'Donnison has rendered himself no longer fit for the purpose of accurate and impartial reporting from the Middle East in accordance with the BBC’s legal obligations.'

Donnison apologised for the gaffe, tweeting: 'A photo I retweeted from another journo showing children injured was not in Gaza as I said but apparently from Syria. Apologies.'

A BBC News spokesperson said: 'Jon Donnison retweeted the photograph in good faith. He issued a correction and apologised as soon as he learned that the picture was not from Gaza.'

This is the latest in a string of embarrassing incidents for the BBC, in which the most high-profile has been the Lord McAlpine Newsnight scandal.

But Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British understanding, replied to the apology by saying that it was also good to highlight the distress caused in Syria by the conflict

It isn't enough, it seems, that BBC journalism - yet AGAIN - has been caught disseminating untruths which just HAPPEN to show those they'd rather not favour in a bad light. Now, we even see one of their journalists using his Twitter account to go further, over and above the BBC's media output !!!

So much for 'impartial news reporting', which the 'righteous' BBC has always smugly claimed it was very good at doing.

Note that the director of the Council for 'Arab-British understanding' saw fit to use this incident for some self-serving spin of their own .. apparently not minding what the BBC had done ...
