Old Poet, His Art And Why He Composes Til Death Sings

With pen and paper he writes as rushes a rising tide
his true heart wide open and sworn to nothing ever hide
always loyal to those humble, hard working, verses true
full of poetic history, even a tale or two
watching dawn's resplendent birth and knowing Time onward flows
ever mindful that Kindness and Love are flowers that grow.

Words come forth as a massive and loud growling ocean tide
his journey a dancing wave, prays for everlasting ride
as hard earth below and brilliant blue sky both sing in tune
he feels that beat that cries out for, coming of shining moon
honest in an Art he swore to be his love and his maid
letting time and honor tell if he ever makes the grade.

Staying real except composing from his romantic dreams
swimming in deepest eddies often were great white sharks teem
his solemn vow, his sweetest goal- this truth he thus relays
we shadow beasts by divinity granted sunny days
upon midnight hour and in its darkest of dreaded dread
he allows ancient muse to filter sweet verse through his head.

The Deep Solemn Prayer And Sincerest Of Hopes

I walked myself to that great sacrifice stone
Aware of multitude of sins, I must atone.

Forever seeking path to die, make true amends
For miseries I have caused lovers and friends
This path, lit by wisdom and verses that speak true
Leads me to a judgement that is too long overdue
An Achilles begging fateful poison arrow
Walking into death, burn in its fiery narrows
In vain hope, this sacrifice wipes dark life away
By some miracle, fulfills prayer I now pray.

I walked myself to that great sacrifice stone
Aware of multitude of sins, I must atone.

Dependent on mercy and God's infinite grace
With knowledge that I can not my bad deeds erase
Nor within encasing of human flesh and bone
Bleed I forgiveness from a heart once made of stone
Yet that saving Light giving great hope sings to me
This soul may escape this pain and again be free
Given entry to paradise of Heaven's shores
Believing that even for me God's mercy pours.

I walked myself to that great sacrifice stone
Aware of multitude of sins, I must atone.

May Heaven's Blessings Both Our Hearts Enshrine

In dread of night, facing your doubts and fears
darling, you know my love is no token
I will shield you, from those shadow cast spears.
if that darkness, has your kind heart broken
I pray, shed not any wet weeping tears.

If that gleaming midnight moon for you fails
know that my deep love and courage holds true
as was sworn, will shall travel happy trails,
for this dark world giveth me only you,
in your beauty all other beauty pales.

When dawn shines its glow, your pretty face shines
its bright promises are bountiful gifts
your Love and Hand to Me, this world defines,
no other blessing this heart so uplifts
may Heaven's blessings both our hearts enshrine.

When dawn shines its glow, your pretty face shines
Your Love and Hand to Me, this world defines.

Achilles, Bloody Battles, Death's Black Hand As Was Fated Part Three, the Conclusion
    Part Three, (the Conclusion)

Dawn, bright rays fell upon Achilles and his band
exiting ship, Greek sandals felt soft Trojan sands
with mighty magnificent Greek pride in courageous hearts
each seeking greater fame they knew would come as battle starts.

Landing all around was mighty horde of Greek ships
as falling Greek anchors through Trojan waters slip
Achilles, full of joyous prospect of this contest's gifts
gave warrior's brave words to his warriors spirits uplift.

Near their shores, Trojan scouts blew horns, Greek first landing
to Hector, Troy's greatest leader none withstanding
rushing to meet fighters in many bloody battle fought
until sun's disappearing rays flowing bloodshed did halt.

As night, slowed removal of the fallen Greek dead
even Achilles brave men, felt dawn's coming dread
yet Olympic gods felt pride, how Greek warriors had died
as Achilles and his men's glory filled their hearts with pride.

For months, then years the Gods watched as great battles rage
as Troy held out due to wisdom from its great sage
and its massive fortified walls, warriors brave and true
even cruelest of the gods gave Troy's warriors their dues.

Day came that Achilles the great Prince Hector slew
as even some mighty Greek warriors had too
Fate, had not delivered Death's deepest goal, its blackest hand
that of Achilles's sad end, greatest sorrow of his band.

Achilles rose, saw dawn and knew it was his last
a vision, he saw his ship sailing its black mast
true to his warrior's brave heart, he felt not a grievous fear
knowing his life would end, as Death its icy hold grew near!

Fated, Death sent poison arrow into his heel
finally greatest Greek hero did Death's hand feel
was not this end, his legendary fame that sealed his name
sacrifice that brought this warrior his everlasting fame?

And the climax, that was to then seal Troy's sad doom
as greater sacrifice must enter Death's new room
for Gods decreed that thousands of Troy's citizens must die
to honor this hero's death, defeat was the Gods's new cry.

Posting this here now. My blog that I presented today at my home poetry site.
Just explaining about this long poem. is creation and my thoughts and reasons on being so long in completing it. -Tyr

Achilles, Bloody Battles, Death's Black Hand As Was Fated
(Part Three) -Conclusion, to be posted today...

I am about to post here the third and final part of my very long Achilles series, the three part poem was started on 8-04- 2018, each part taking more
and more time to finish because of meeting the numerical challenge I had decided at the onset in including in my writing this long poem.
All three parts meeting the below counts given.....

    Syllables Per Line:
    0 12 12 14 14 0 12 12 14 14
    0 12 12 14 14 0 12 12 14 14
    0 12 12 14 14 0 12 12 14 14
    0 12 12 14 14 0 12 12 14 14
    0 12 12 14 14
    Total # Syllables: 468
    Total # Words: 340

Math being one of my favorite subjects I often include mathematical challenges in creating my poetry...
In this very long poem they are as follows
three times 468 syllables equals total of 1404 syllables.
three times 340 words equals total of 1020 words
    1404 syllables + 1020 words equals a total of 2424....
This was a compromise from my original idea of writing a 2400 word poem on Achilles. I saw how I could shorten the long poem
and still get in my favorite number which is 24. and do so not once but twice.
Truth is, it has taken over a year to complete and part two took three times longer to compose than did part one, while part three has taken seven times longer than did part two- thus
entire long poem has taken a bit over 13 months to complete.
My longest ever poem to complete. And certainly one that I will ever dare to attempt again. As I now have on my agenda six other incomplete poem series that I must some day tackle, if my time on earth permits such in my- to date now, a bit over 49 year long poetic journey.

Tribute Poem, Dedicated To Memory Of Our Loving Father
    ( 1901- 1968 )

A man of great courage and iron nerve
as a youth into trouble he would swerve
some had called him, brute, rascal or knave
yet none ever stated he was not brave.

With strength God given and proud Southern born.
Always between two worlds his soul was torn.

As a kind and honest man he was tops
a father, a farmer proud of his crops
with labor and sweat falling from his brow
he taught us all, to love, by showing how.

With strength God given and proud Southern born.
Always between two worlds his soul was torn.

Swearing family was Hope and Treasure
gave us love, always in equal measure
made us swear to defend family name
taught us respect, asking only the same.

With strength God given and proud Southern born.
Always between two worlds his soul was torn.

Life had never been easy, nor his friend
he lived it well, right up until the end
as a giant, one we did so admire
a hero, our hopes he did so inspire.

With strength God given and proud Southern born.
Always between two worlds his soul was torn.

When his death came it was in peaceful sleep
pray we safe journey, his soul Heaven keeps
he died on the same day as of his birth
for sixty-eight years, showing us Love's worth.

With strength God given and proud Southern born.
Always between two worlds his soul was torn.

    R.J. Lindley, May 27th, 1973
    Rhyme, (Dedication to our father)

    Note, today : 9-24-2019 (50 years after father's death..
I have decided to present this poem, taken from my private journal.
Written when I was a mere lad of nineteen years young. Five years after
father's death and during my first year of marriage to my first wife.
Nothing in my life has ever affected or hurt me more than his dying.
I was fifteen years old and to me he was everything. After his death,
I went into a nineteen year long battle against this dark world-
lived a wild youth, fought many, many fights, endured many sorrows
and somehow lived to tell the tale. Now blessed with loving family,
great friends and the blessing of having found poetry to be a true
and marvelous treasure to read, compose and gift to others.

""Et hoc modo orandi, cum vero corde orant,
Caritatem Deus tuus benedixerit mihi omnis longa dies,
Atque divina iura pace locus tuus manum meam navem
Olim te in Caelo, oro te anima mea et lapsum.""

Thank you my friend. I finally had time to click on the link you gave and read.
Just as I remembered it when reading it as a 13 year old boy. I wrote an essay on it and received an A+
by my very strict teacher, who was a huge fan of Greek mythology.
They used to have teachers that were like that-- that truly inspired young boys and young girls to read and enjoy classic literature..-Tyr

Seeking Ever The More, Greatest Of Truths

    I.

The soul, which like a heart true beats
hers to my love forever weds
    singing songs that passions entreat
to invite joy to lover's bed
tho' Fate oft dances as it cheats.

    II.

And Spring gifts its sweet heated thaw
    winter fades into hidden caves
across the land its warmth crawls
as mortals for this bounty rave
tho' Fate oft plays as it slow gnaws.

    III.

This earth with its great darkness yields
to little to the meek and mild
as bright flowers bloom far afield
life gives us mother and dear child
tho' Fate oft ruins what man builds.

    IV.

    Nature, with its measured turns
    glorifies its resplendent sun
as its hot flames so brightly burn
we mortals ever seek more fun
tho' Fate oft our milk overturns.

    V.

Life, this great force we hold so dear
is but whispers in flowing winds
yet with faith be we of good cheer
hope rests beyond the river bends
tho' Fate oft kindles our deep fears.

    VI.

This sad truth our hearts must now hear
man is made of mere flesh and bones
Life and Soul felt more when in tears
    saddest love hold dark overtones
tho' Fate oft casts its sharpest spears.

    VII.

And in wisdom comes greater light
for we may walk blinded and lost
as love's soft pleasures conquers night
new dawns may sprinkle gleaming frost
tho' Fate oft kills much with its spite.

    Old Note: June 12th, 1975

I do not know what future brings
whether with joy Life sweeter sings
dearer are my verse passions now
ink stains paper, as my muse prowls.

    New Note: September 28th, 2019

I see what my past hath me brought
once in life my soul was thus caught
between devil and deep blue sea
but Lord did have mercy on me!

Woe To He, That This Great Darkness Seeks To Embrace

When blind man sees that pale horse in night skies
innocence births waterfalls with its cries
dawn rejects the cock's ringing morning crow
mid-summer lashes earth with ice and snow
Mother Nature stops its blessings and weeps
you will know that Death and Fate play for keeps.

When vengeful sun burns dying moon away
as night's blackness and its shadows hold sway
man in turmoil, accuses all the more
those falling to kneel, for help they implore
divine intervention to save us all
from evil's hands and that last trumpet call.

When darkness, its powers seeks souls to slay
women and children, pawns with which it plays
ground heaving, erupts and with gasping moans
scorches oceans and burns even the stones
as world denies this tribulation curse
mankind will race from bad to even worse.

When faith and hope are deemed to be false dreams.
Earth and sky will moan loud, sorrowful screams.

Life, Love, And Verses Born Of True Poetic Heart

Waken to Life, its joys that bring truest living
amidst this world and its pitiless deceiving,
Ample the blessings cast forth by divine givings
true is the gratitude in grateful receiving.

Watch each dawn, as in resplendent glory its rises.
As Life gives Love, Mystery and other Surprises.

Be still and allow kind hearts to wonders bestow
as golden prizes to those in direst of need,
Pure as gleaming whites in blankets of heavy snow
as counterweights to human graft and its greed.

Watch each dawn, as in resplendent glory its rises.
As Life gives Love, Mystery and other Surprises.

Fear not, that such goodness will by evil be slain
for the Light by wicked blade shall not perish,
Sweetest treasures by blackest of deeds no man gains
that which in Love and Harmony we most cherish.

Watch each dawn, as in resplendent glory its rises.
As Life gives Love, Mystery and other Surprises.

As morn's radiant glows, entreats our admiration
we with courageous hearts, our verses compose,
Deep symbols, well thrown benevolent salutation
oft as supple in colors, as is Love's red rose.

Watch each dawn, as in resplendent glory its rises.
As Life gives Love, Mystery and other Surprises.

As fleeing sun with soft red hues in honor gifts
may we in our humbleness, this pleasure feel,
creation gave us our souls, that Life oft uplifts
and in dawn's brilliant glows, rays that heal.

Watch each dawn, as in resplendent glory its rises.
As life gives Love, Mystery and other Surprises.

    Before The New Rising Sun

    Before the new rising sun,
After night begins its slow fade,
Consider what needs to be done:
Inside this world man has made
Where so many live and die,
    As slaves to blinded greed,
While so few ask the why
The millions so hurt and bleed.

    Before the loud cock crows,
    After its morning call echoes,
    Consider to let Love grow:
Inside and outward as it shows
Walk the path that so redeems,
    Softer heart and human soul,
    Abandon world's greedy schemes
As such dark takes heavy tolls.

    Before that red sun sets,
    After sweet youth fades away,
    Consider what faith begets:
    Inside the spirit each day
    Enjoy peace that so inspires,
The treasures of Life and Love,
    That kindles deep flaming fires
Born from Light from far above.

Rhyme, ( Allow Truth and Light to gift their golden treasures)

Note: This was rewritten from memory of a poem that was among
the hundreds that were stolen from me and burned many decades ago.
The title and some verses came to me but the rest are new.
I am surprised that this poem came to me this morn as if it demanded
that I address its premature demise those many years ago.

Flowing Deep, Those Ghastly Shards Of Regret

Flowing deep, those ghastly shards of regret
and the spasms they birth in weeping soul
no reprieve, caught in that sorrowful net
love's joyous flag no longer had its pole.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

Never saw her again, I ran away
bare truth is, I knew she was wanted more
than a simple life, with simple man's pay
with her fast asleep, I ran out the door.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

Putting distance in our path, out of state
I heard no cries, did not see how she bled
looking back, her love became bitter hate
my mistake seen, I wished to be dead.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

Six years and a million miles I had fled
where sadder path my soul walked alone
yet see her well I could, in her silk bed
in sweet night dreams, we talked on the phone.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

Courage came and I went to her hometown
to beg forgiveness for my youthful fear
I saw her again in her blue nightgown
I ran away, my eyes still wet with tears.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

As moon's rays through my window hit my eyes
then I realized it was a bad dream
nobody could hear my bellowing cries
no, we would never again be a team.

Moon was shining and sky was gleaming bright.
That fateful night, I was blind, without sight.

Treasure Once Found Within An Enchanted Forest Dream

With cravings of Love's joyous shout

as warmth of rose in full sunlight

    casting its dappled shades about

    hot flames, ardor's red-throes excite...

and within soft glows, its amber shine

    the fairy goddess became mine.

    Robert J. Lindley, 10-09- 2019
Romanticism, (What A Young Poet Once Dreamed To Find )

Note- After be chided for my not more often writing any softer, sweeter , romantic pieces, I took note and decided to sit a spell and let passion send its romantic fires to kindle flickering flames that once so burned my soul in my youth.
This short piece flowed forth and resisted my mighty tempting urges to lengthen it.
Actually, about forty years ago, I wrote about a hundred poems similar to this, in content ,in passionate embrace of the blasting fires that once stirred a young poet's seeking heart.
