Life Fled As I Sought Yet Another Day,
( verses born from the illusion of immortality, 1977)
    Part One

As I went beyond that black veil,
Having trod this earth and seen hell,
I look back while daring to say,
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

Yes, youth was fine in days of dust,
Love its great bounty sought, a must,
Little thought of the later pay
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

World was a ride, its glory great,
Of its sweetest pleasures I ate,
I that went about my own way,
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

I a warrior born by birth,
A child of heart, a child of earth,
A lone vagabond as they say
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

A true joy, my shadow and I,
    Wanderer beneath heavenly sky,
Hellbent to do just as I may,
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

O' sweet future lay at my feet,
As I sought coming death to cheat,
Fate cried, " No more can you stay"
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

As I went beyond that black veil,
Having trod this earth and seen hell,
I look back while daring to say,
" Life fled as I sought yet another day."

    Ancient Doubles

Prayers Uttered And Hours Missing You,
    Ancient Doubles

Sing, sing of the sadness and lonely hour
Of cold rain and its shivering shower
Empty bed and those nights forever lost
Dawn's aches, sprinkles of glittering frost.

Prayers uttered and hours missing you.
Your soft laugh, your bright smile, all that you do.

Sing, sing of love's inspiration given
Our times, our love of together livin'
Our future treasures, what we have now lost
Our new sorrows what living apart costs.

Prayers uttered and hours missing you.
Your soft laugh, your bright smile, all that you do.

Sing, sing about nights of heavenly delight
Glory of love, long before our last fight
Waking to enjoy summer's blessed day
Both our vows to forever in love stay.

Prayers uttered and hours missing you.
Your soft laugh, your bright smile, all that you do.

Sing, sing my dear- of our life and our love
How we both knelt and thanked God above
The times we so missed each other's touch
How once we had romance, so very much.

Prayers uttered and hours missing you.
Your soft laugh, your bright smile, all that you do.

In Arrogance This World We Think We Made

Dark wings fell from the snowy mountain ledge
Down the hill into the porcupine hedge
Lying there whimpering in last flutter
Like morning's burnt toast absent its butter.

O' but the red jam is so truly sweet
The high mountain glows with its icy sheet
There the last ghost bird stands without its wings
Morn's breath dances forth and so proudly sings.

Mother Nature casts a condemning eye
Soon fall splashing tears from a wailing sky
The bird changes into a human form
Life declares- yes this is another norm.

O' but mortals such can never believe
We live in a world born to deceive
Here fantasy is a fool's great parade
In arrogance this world we think we made.

Drink, Drink Of Pen, Paper And Poet's Ink

Drink, drink of pen, paper and poet's ink
As the red-faced sun in the west sinks
And morn's beaming smile promises much more
Seas of ice cream and sweet chocolate shores
Words and vivid colors- across the page
Verses of vivid stripes, every gage.

Drink, drink, in heart and soul let wonder spill
As snow-white mountain looks at lowly hills
As radiant sun shines from the far east
Life and love- romance a bountiful feast
Words and vivid colors- across the page
Verses of vivid stripes, every gage.

Drink , drink, see the mind, a new poet born
As earth flows with the gleanings of soft morn
And world spins into the coming parade
Poet warrior sharpens his trusty blade
Words and vivid colors- across the page
Verses of vivid stripes, every gage.

Drink, drink, let eager spirit dare to flee
As inner thoughts splash in bright rainbow seas
And the painter inks a great masterpiece
Verses birthed that bring needed release
Words and vivid colors- across the page
Verses of vivid stripes, every gage.

Drink, drink of pen, paper and poet's ink
As the red-faced sun in the west sinks

And nirvana - comes a peaceful release.

The First Gathering, The Wrath, The Return Of Zeus
    Poet's Notes

    Reference note: Ares

Unlike his Roman counterpart, Mars, he was never very popular, and his worship was not extensive in Greece. He represented the distasteful aspects of brutal warfare and slaughter. From at least the time of Homer—who established him as the son of the chief god, Zeus, and Hera, his consort—Ares was one of the Olympian deities; his fellow gods and even his parents, however, were not fond of him (Iliad, Book V, 889 ff.). Nonetheless, he was accompanied in battle, by his sister Eris (Strife) and his sons (by Aphrodite) Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Rout). Also associated with him were two lesser war deities: Enyalius, who is virtually identical with Ares himself, and Enyo, a female counterpart.

Ares’ worship was largely in the northern areas of Greece, and, although devoid of the social, moral, and theological associations usual with major deities, his cult had many interesting local features. At Sparta, in early times, at least, human sacrifices were made to him from among the prisoners of war. In addition, a nocturnal offering of dogs—an unusual sacrificial victim, which might indicate a chthonic (infernal) deity—was made to him as Enyalius. During his festival at Geronthrae in Laconia, no women were allowed in the sacred grove, but at Tegea he was honoured in a special women’s sacrifice as Gynaikothoinas (“Entertainer of Women”). At Athens he had a temple at the foot of the Areopagus (“Ares’ Hill”).

    Ares

Ares, classical sculpture; in the National Roman Museum, Rome.
    Anderson—Alinari/Art Resource, New York
The mythology surrounding the figure of Ares is not extensive. He was associated with Aphrodite from earliest times; in fact, Aphrodite was known locally (e.g., at Sparta) as a war goddess, apparently an early facet of her character. Occasionally, Aphrodite was Ares’ legitimate wife, and by her he fathered Deimos, Phobos (who accompanied him into battle), Harmonia, and—as first told by Simonides in the 6th century BCE—Eros, god of love. By Aglauros, the daughter of Cecrops, he was the father of Alcippe. He was the sire of at least three of Heracles’ adversaries: Cycnus, Lycaon, and Diomedes of Thrace. On vases, Ares is usually the typical armed warrior. The Parthenon frieze contains a group of Olympians, among whom Ares, in unwarlike garb, has been tentatively identified. He also appears on the great frieze of the altar at Pergamum.

The First Gathering, The Wrath, The Return Of Zeus

Else the throngs of mortals find the truth,

teeming in the angry hordes they may,

forget to pay alms and worship us all,

    instead learn to burn their own flame;

Dare they become gods of their own creation,

rule as they may with greater might

see in the night sky a greater heaven

with blinded power plot another course-

once lit the fires of power will never cease

    our reign will quickly fade!

    Then spoke Ares,

    brothers the answer is war

we must teach them war is the way

that greed and lust are to be glorified

that obtaining ever greater wealth the true goal,

    we dare not do otherwise

    Aphrodite then rose,

Her beauty awed even the Gods,

    She laughed and declared

    war is not the answer

we must gift those of mortal flesh

    love, carnal pleasures

    and nights of heavenly delights

they may then build more temples in my name

and marvel at our divine wisdom

    Hera could stand no more,

how dare they ignore her power

not consult her in this new game

knowing mighty Zeus was galaxies away

She sought to gain more influence with the lesser Gods

as her jealousies were legion and her heart as cold as the frozen North

she bellowed, punish them is the way

plagues and pestilence to ride along with- War

    let Death exert its powers!

Phobos and Deimos next rose to speak,

in unison favoring Hera's dark call

and their father's passion for - War

singing of the beauty of blood and gore

    the humbling of all mankind

that they would again pray to the mighty gods

    look to Olympus and bow in enslavement;

    At that moment,

a lightning bolt struck the temple pillars

from above an angry voice roared - Cease!

you have angered he that must never be challenged

I Zeus, will allow none of your wicked schemes

    bow now to me,

    so my wrath may subside

and banishment from Olympus may not be on your heads

    As all bowed,

Zeus appeared, with his blazing sword drawn

these earthbound creatures of weaken flesh are mine

war is allowed only when I command

Ares, leave now else the fires of my wrath I may sate

as Ares fled, Hera hurriedly walked away

Phobos and Deimos begged for forgiveness

    mighty Zeus calmed.

Below the city saw the fires of the volcano erupt

the citizens all fell into a panic

crying out, mighty Zeus please save us

    suddenly the eruptions ceased

the masses raced into the temples

    giving thanks and paying alms

    Zeus smiled and said,

now graze on the bounty below

know this, your time shall come

war and death will be your swords

    greed and lust shall rule

and you too will then feel the

pain and the immense darkness of being gods!

    Then Death spoke,

Zeus, you live a thousand years as a day

your time shall one day come

    my power shall vanquish yours

    enjoy this fleeting moment

for yours and man's future holds many surprises.

    Silence reigned, centuries flew by

and in the echoes of yesterdays

dark whispers and sadness in hidden realms hold sway.

    Note -
My having yesterday read Keith O.J. Hunt's magnificent poem titled,
"Land of the seven suns" stirred my soul and woke my muse.
When my muse shouted wake from thy abandonment of hope,
Pick up pen and let the dead gods of old speak!
I was shocked at the passion the muse displayed'
And with some apprehension did as I was bade to do.
Giving thanks to my dear friend Keith. Such inspiration is indeed
    A golden gift.

Chorus: Zeus, who guided men to think who laid it down that wisdom comes alone through suffering. Still there drips in sleep against the heart grief of memory; against our pleasure we are temperate.

*And the modern Gods laugh poisoning wells. *While the blinded throngs hide under sad stones. *From the deepest pits come magical spells. * To birth new sins from which we must atone. *Blackness, its powers hold millions as slaves. *As this world races towards its near doom.* Freed from our chains by sleeping in new graves. *We marvel at our spacious new room......... Just had to get this one in... Came to me like a shot..

Superb! The depth of knowledge and expertise here is incredible, (though your "usual" par excellance), and you have woven it with such imagery and phrasing that leaves one craving more! And look at all the comments - you are still revered here, my friend, and rightly so ... it heartens me to see it! ( I have five comments COMBINED from my last SIX poems, though I feel I'm writing better than ever - it is discouraging, though I try to let it go). Blessings, Brother!

Thank you my friend. Yes, seems to me too oft many great poems are ignored or not given their just dues. Maybe it is the volume of new poetry flowing in. I have no clue why oft truly great poetry is not comment on. Covid, and other factors play a part. Know this, I myself wish that I could write as well as you do... Keep writing my friend, your poems will definitely stand the test of time!! God bless.

Thank you my friend. You have summed it up so very well. From history, from mythology we can learn so very much. To me it is a true shame that our public schools have fled away from that, imho. Sad that poetry is being placed further and further away from the young students' minds.. As is the proper teaching of Literature, imho. A sad path to have taken but such is the growth of so-called modern enlightenment. God bless...

Thank you mu friend. I hope you will read my new poem presented this morn and perhaps enjoy it as well. It is from 1993 and inspired by a verse from Alice In Chains song, the title-- Man In Chains. As such moved me very deeply because I too was once was in chains. I was blessed to have found the light that broke my chains.. And to have survived to carry on with a new life, new hope and a new journey through this far too oft dark world. God bless..

Thank you my friend. Especially for the fav too. We as a people should study and learn more from history, imho. Should definitely study, teach more about poetry in our schools. Sad part is that the schools are still moving away from that. Literature is every bit as important to our culture/kids as is math, science and history. God bless..

Nothing of greatness has ever been achieved nor will with war. The taking of territories and material treasures, always brings death and destruction, mostly to those who do not ask nor wish to participate in war. The Gods fought just as men in these fables from the past; one day our civilization will be a fable. Let us hope the great libraries and records full of us, are not burnt to cinders. Aphrodite seemed to possess not only beauty but what some may refer to as the Christ Consciousness. As always Lindley, on point.

Thank you my friend. Yes it most certainly has an element of "Christ Consciousness" within its verses and theme. As such can not be omitted from the history and advancement of mankind. Nor that of the subject of the ancient pagan religions/ mythologies, etc. When one points out the dark they must also shine the light. Greek mythology has always fascinated me and I have written many poems based ion that theme. Maybe a few dozens over time not presented here. God bless.

Thank you my friend. I was lucky to have had so very many excellent teachers from my school years over 5 decades ago. Back when literature was taught and taught very well , imho. Why even poetry was taught in high school and even in elementary school back then! God bless...

Thank you my friend. Your words cheer this old poet and are indeed a gift. We in this modern world can learn much from history, ancient Greece, mythology , philosophers, historians and poets. Too bad that our modern public schools have fled away from that.. God bless.

Thank you my friend. I truly believe this modern world should look back to the old poets more! And as well look back to Greece and Athens for the enlightenment gifted the world. Far too much of what we think is profound thinking is actually a grievous error in vanity. History teaches that reality if it is studied and properly analyzed. Poetry teaches as well, when it has purpose and is created to give, to teach , to be true art. God bless.

Mythology is so fascinating to me. "Aphrodite declared, war is not the answer" I would have to agree with part of her thoughts. "Carnal Pleasures" is not the answer, but love is. Seems War is the answer in our world today. So sad indeed. You have created a Masterpiece my dear friend. This is so beautifully written and presented. My best to you. ~ Brandy

Thank you my friend, we can learn a lot from Greek/Roman mythology. So much about what lead up to the enlightenment given to us by Greece, Athens in particular and its famous Orators, philosophers, poets, sculptors, painters and other artisans. I to this day still study that. As is evident by many of my poems both old and new..

    Quotes:

Zeus does not bring all men’s plans to fulfillment.

Chorus: Zeus, who guided men to think who laid it down that wisdom comes alone through suffering. Still there drips in sleep against the heart grief of memory; against our pleasure we are temperate.

The Heart Grief Of Memory, World Employs

Man would deny life of its true beauty
Walk in darkness as a fool and a slave
Consider greed and lusts as his duty
And ever the more wealth so deeply crave.

Enslave others to plow as beasts in fields
    Deny the freedoms divinely granted
Pillage earth, burn the trees before their yields
And glorify their dark seeds thus planted.

That modern world such so soundly applauds
While its wicked winds destroy the good found
And its craven priests celebrates its frauds
While their great darkness seeps from underground.

Loud the wails of innocence destroyed.
As the greed keeps its faithful employed.

I Was Once The Man Locked In The Box
( Tribute Given To Alice In Chains, "Layne Stayley" )

I was, once a man locked in a box

Begging for a savior smart as a fox

Even better, should my hero be a she

For it was Love that imprisoned me

I need a hero to gift my heart to

A warm loving angel to start life anew

A rare soul to bring out the best in me

For only by true love can I be free.

Pray I, now within these cold metal walls

For sweet forgiveness with my sincere calls

I a prisoner without any chains

Condemned to live heart-broke with my pains

In this mind-made steel cavern all alone

With this empty chill shattering my bones

Need I, a rare beauty to rescue me

For only by true love can I be free.

I was, once a man locked in a box

Begging for a savior smart as a fox

Even better, should my hero be a she

For it was Love that imprisoned me.

Beg I, an angel to come rescue me

For only by true love can I be free.

( When so lost, the mind becomes chained in a dark abyss )

Tribute given to the band - Alice In Chains, the song

Titled-- " Man In The Box", singer Layne Stayley

    1st Note:

Once the darkness held me in iron chains

So fiercely that I felt not the Spring rains

I was blinded and sealed in my own tomb

Prisoner in a soul breaking black room

My cries came back as waves on poison seas

Useless were my first angry cursing pleas

Only when heart and soul found the true light

Could I start to begin my freedom fight

Beg I, an angel to come rescue me

For only with true love can I be free.

Across Mind's Fertile Fields New Seeds Are Cast

Across mind's fertile fields new seeds are cast
Oft spread onward by an innocent flame
If, if only, youth could forever last
Death would have to abandon its dark game.

Old age would vanish with its dreaded pains.
We would not be looking at sad remains.

Across flowering meadows oak trees grow
Near the lost graveyard where childhood once ran
If, if only, in June's heat cool winds blow
And more pretty girls show off their dark tans.

Old age would vanish with its dreaded pains.
We would not be looking at sad remains.

Across this great earth, life dances and teems
Sun rewards casting its bright golden rays
If, if only, river gifts cooler streams
We in our youthful zeal may pass our days.

Old age would vanish with its dreaded pains.
We would not be looking at sad remains.

Across mind's fertile fields new seeds are cast
Oft spread onward by an innocent flame
If, if only, youth could forever last
Death would have to abandon its dark game.

    Note:
Tis a terrible thing to look back and think of the time that
one once so wasted. Yet as noted- we are what the past has
made us. For better or worse, I survived much and believe
there is a reason for that survival. Perhaps could be as simple
    as my writing.
Poetry has been in my blood firmly- as an addiction
    - since age 15 - in 1969. The same year that my father died.
Now the ink that courses through these old veins.
Recalls the beginnings, youth and the wild years.
Life was crazy- living , loving, O' the pains.
Poetry cries, yes ink out those tears… ink out those tears.

I, Pilgrim Seeking Truth Before The Grave

    The night so craves,
the languishing moonlit echoes of the seas
yet the blood in this poor soul, strives to save
the immense beauty of earth, sky and trees
I, pilgrim seeking truth before the grave
    search heavens for inspirational decrees,

    The night so screams,
    wailings of humanity's blinded wailings
yet in the gasps, and dying of the dreams
    darkness amplifies the mortal failings
and gazing stars cast down glittering beams
on sad empty ships hellbent on sailing,

    The night weeps,
are we destined to enjoy dawn's new light
while we took needed pause daring to sleep
our dark world so gifted us greater plights
we of weaken flesh our hopes strive to keep
amidst the rain of such horrific sights,

    The night so craves,
the languishing moonlit echoes of the seas
yet the blood in this poor soul, strives to save
the immense beauty of earth, sky and trees
I, pilgrim seeking truth before the grave
    search heavens for inspirational decrees.

    Note:
In this dark world fate lessens man's power,
Setting up prison cells in dark towers
While life races forth into future plains
Evil spreads birthing its usual pains
O' but some in faith dare to believe
True light will destroy all that so deceives.

    Poetry, That Glorious Unparalleled Art

    Enigmatic, invisible forces at play
Tides of mysteries, Fate's unpredictable ways
Numerous casualties- night's vast hidden winds
Future- vagaries all that mortal life portends
Substance of heart and soul inked from eager pen
Ways and wiles- myriad paths, evil held within
Verses born of passion and immutable love
Beauty of moon, stars and vast gleaming lights above!

    Poetry, that glorious unparalleled art
Thoughts, dreams, words -emotions from poet's beating heart
Oceans of giving, communicating truth and more
Words that sing, that into ones heart so sweetly bore
Or paint the hopes, dreams and love, special thoughts on life
Perhaps to gift joy, inspire, relieve daily strife
Verses born of passion and immutable love
Beauty of moon, stars and vast gleaming lights above!

    Enigmatic, invisible forces at play
Tides of mysteries, Fate's unpredictable ways
Numerous casualties- night's vast hidden winds

This Quest, Was It But A Sad Rage Against The Storm

As I wade through this poisonous wilderness- alone
Raging fury contained well within my breast
Seeing earth's darkness, cold- cold as a frozen stone
I trudging onward, seeking that elusive rest.

My sanity cries out, begging release from pain.
Desperate plea, salvation I seek to attain.

Where fled the hopeful happiness of tender youth
Dawns of wonderment and prayers of eager soul
The immense pride and dear blessing of seeking truth
Battling the darkness that is vying for control.

My sanity cries out, begging release from pain.
Desperate plea, salvation I seek to attain.

This quest, was it but a sad rage against the storm
Perhaps a hopeless quest soothing vanity's aches
Or futile journey to find a place safe and warm
Or deeper separation from this world of fakes.

My sanity cries out, begging release from pain.
Desperate plea, salvation I seek to attain.

As I wade through this poisonous wilderness- alone
Raging fury contained well within my breast
Seeing earth's darkness, cold- cold as a frozen stone
I trudging onward, seeking that elusive rest.

Tribute given to the inspiring poem by Emily Dickinson:
XXVI ("The farthest thunder")-reference poem below-

    XXVI

The farthest thunder that I heard
    Was nearer than the sky,
And rumbles still, though torrid noons
    Have lain their missiles by.
    The lightning that preceded it
    Struck no one but myself,
But I would not exchange the bolt
For all the rest of life.
    Indebtedness to oxygen
    The chemist may repay,
    But not the obligation
    To electricity.
It founds the homes and decks the days,
    And every clamor bright
    Is but the gleam concomitant
    Of that waylaying light.
The thought is quiet as a flake, —
    How life's reverberation
    Its explanation found!

An Awakening, From Darkness Into The Light

As I walked the flame danced in my mouth
I wearied yet the earnest spirit flew.
I a poor lad born and raised in the South,
Had nurtured the anger until immense it grew
    In the blackness, I raged seeking my relief;
Yet the surge of power held me firm in its grip
This was the essence of deep pride and belief
A sword, a spear with its soon to be bloody tip
And in my delirium, I cursed infinity
As Fate and Death's black hand soothed my rage
I no longer sought love, life or eternity
My bridges burnt, I sought to rip up every page-
Ignoring morn's bright gleam, I raced ever onward
But a slave to my ever growing dark revenge
As a bomb, a missile fast flying forward
Ready to explode and the entire world singe.

Then came a realization, a bolt from the blue
I was right there standing in front of the grave
Nothing but the grass, the soil between me and you
    There and then, your words did my life save;
Son, I am gone but your life is yet to be lived
Conquer your anger, let truth and light relieve
Pray, speak from your heart, accept and forgive
Understand, the darkness was sent to deceive.

I looked to the sky and pleaded for resolution
For I had fought long and great my hatred built
This dark world aided by its poisonous institutions
Having plunged its evil daggers in to the hilt.
Then all grew dim, I woke to be in my warm bed
Asking myself, had I truly been there
All of it had seemed so very real in my head
I rose, to ponder- was it a nightmare sent to scare?

I dressed, made my decision to all this go check
Hoping against hope that it was all true
For truth was my life had long been a wreck
As life had naught but its sorrows threw.
I drove to the graveyard, hoping for a clue
Anything to confirm that I had indeed been there
For in that dream, I had actually talked to you
And felt your love and how much you truly care.

I found no evidence and in dismay walked away
But dad I know the truth of the words you had spoke
So at that very moment, I bowed my head to pray
For a small spark in this grieving heart you had woke
Then I heard a voice say so plain and so clear
You are my son too, now be thee now in peace
I am with you now, always ever so near
I have commanded the darkness its torments to cease.

As I walked that long way back to my car, I then heard
You are my beloved son, I too watch over you
God spoke to you, I too heard God's every word
Always that this great day would come, I prayed for too.

Dare I This, To Such Marvelous Dreams Dream

A baby, once in a small wooden crib,
Humanity's seed, vestige of Adam's rib
I watch as he nurses then falls to sleep
The afternoon sun, beaming golden deep
Quiet spreads, contented soul sets to muse
I wake, he is six now trying on shoes
Lo! I marvel at how fast the years flew
I pray that, he becomes a brave man too
Such that sets himself a poet to be
A great dream, such as once stirred in me.

As night falls, he mumbles rhymes in his sleep
I hear that music, my soul begins to weep
Dare he to such a heavy burden choose
When wicked world and odds say he will loose
I hope, I beg, fruitful blessings on he
And that a sincere poet he may be
A true believer, still a child at heart
One to study the masters, their great art
Promise of a world and a life to grow
Born to feel this deep love, its mighty flow.

May treasures of words fall into his lap
Afternoon sun glows, I wake from my nap
Aghast, I see my son bottle in hand
Yet a baby, 'twas just a loving dream
A magical trip down a wondrous stream
I ponder, do my words his mind compel
And perhaps gift poetry's loving spell
I fear, knowing in dark times it is hell
To him, I shall not such morbid thoughts tell
Tho' I toss coins in that wishing well.

I shall speak of poetry and its gems
As sparrow hawk across blue-cast skies skims
Floating in summer air, happy and free
    Just above forest's magnificent trees
And flower meadows singing out that tune
The splendor of bright sunny days in June
And I, his proud father cheering him on
My son, a man, a fine poet now grown
Dare I this, to such marvelous dreams dream
That son and I, one day be such a team!

    Note: 2-05-2021
Alas! A dream that has not yet come true
my son now fourteen told me he likes poetry but
thinks writing is not for him.
    I ask what then?
He says, Dad, I do not know yet.
I think perhaps a glimmer of hope yet remains,
as he gets older and a bit wiser.
I will let him choose his path in life, but will also
attempt to set him towards writing poetry as a
    pastime, a hobby.
    Hope being a wonderful thing.
