Even When The Entirety Fails The Wanted Sum

I stand aghast at how fast these verses oft come
Even when the entirety fails the wanted sum
Upon low hills, I seek much higher mountain tops
Rejoice, in blessings of poetry's bumper crops
Treasures newborn by desires, searching souls and heart
Oft joining mankind and Heaven so far apart.

I stand aghast at how fast these verses oft come
Even when the entirety fails the wanted sum

I cast my ink and the paper begs for much more
As old pen scribbles, broken heart weeps as before
Careful to avoid sad-tears wetting filling pages
Reminding spirit, poets are brothers to sages
Born to gift and share Life's sweet blessings in black ink
With knowledge that human life is too oft a blink.

I stand aghast at how fast these verses oft come
Even when the entirety fails the wanted sum

I wake to dawn's voice, commanding compose more words
We are more than just beasts roaming in raging herds
From Life, we may find inspiration and pure Love
Such may come, even if its not sought from above
Hold this wisdom, this truth that promises much more
All true-seeking may find joy of paradise shores.

I stand aghast at how fast these verses oft come
Even when the entirety fails the wanted sum

    Robert J. Lindley,

Rhyme, ( What The Wise Old Owl Once Told Me )

Old Note ( 1975): This week Life beat on me with abandon.
I lost my best friend and death also thrust its
wicked blade at me. Yet my soul will defy its
joining with Fate's blackened hand and wicked glee.

New Note (2019): Now going on record, oft defiance is
the true measure of a man. And in its journey
we may rise to greater heights and see Fate
and Death both temporarily thwarted. Yet such
is always a temporary measure. Death may come
in a blink of any eye or upon a gnat's whisper
in the blacken host of eternally raging winds....

As Winter's Icy Breath This Heart Reminds

Icy frost grows thick on dead toads,
winter's breath drapes snow laced airs
great the sorrows upon this road
as looms darkness of such despairs
Yet life demands this walk alone
in silence born of pregnant pause
too much of life has swiftly flown
for soul to find another cause.

Alas! Will such pains ever end
Can dreams return my truest friend?

Shall we learn to eat dying words
as penance for world's bellowing ills,
flee dark skies as storm chased birds
    eat decay of innocent kills?
    Yet hope begs tomorrow's tales
as beauty of a rose's bright red
thrilled with its sweet pungent smells
    forgetting of life's many dreads.

Alas! Will such pains ever end
Can dreams return my truest friend?

Winter's breath, reminds heart's great loss
    aches gasping within dark repose,
as trees blow shaking frozen moss
sad sorrows gift their heavy blows
Pity the spirit this loss feels
as whipping winds deny sweet hope
    of love's return, promised thrills
now so far beyond earthly scope.

Alas! Will such pains ever end
Can dreams return my truest friend?

    Old Note- deleted...

New note: While perusing through some of my old poetry journals
I found this old poem. It struck me with its depths of despair
from a great loss and how bleak my life and future look when in
such a sad state. I remember walking in the woods that morn and
thinking how starkly bleak the winter landscape looked--
much to match the icy cold stabs of epic pains in my weeping soul
that I did at that moment so very deeply feel...
Presented now to show even when at greatest of lost hope, in the
deepest of despair, hope exists and oft delivers a far brighter
future than one imagines. And life goes on...
I hope this old poem and this note may help any that are going through
very trying times now. God bless.

While I can't write poetry to express myself so eloquently, I completely understand and relate 100%. I'm not sure of others at all, and I'm weird I'm sure, but I have a way of seeing the dread and dreary in things after a tragic event, a loss or something deeply upsetting. And when that happens I tend to envelop myself in that dreariness, that sadness. Whether that be listening to sad music, or peeking through photos that will make me further sad, or reading such poetry like yours, or trying to express myself similarly. I tend to wallow in the sadness. Not a pity party, don't get me wrong. Just if even by my lonesome, driving with the sad songs, or sitting with the headphones on, and maybe writing while I listen to such music. I don't know if doing so helps me or makes things worse, but that's who I am and what I do.

Now, I wish I could take my emotions and write like you do!
“You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named "Bush", "Dick", and "Colin." Need I say more?” - Chris Rock

This poem creates such a powerful mood, Robert, and the 4 line interlude about "hope" right in the middle is a great counter-point. And then back to the Winter's Breath. I will remember this one.

Heartbroken, I Stand Here So Strong

    Heaven has demanded your return
I've only ashes in this urn
From golden halls, flies our love song
Heartbroken I stand here so strong.

You were my angel, love divine
In those flown yesterdays, so fine
I was lost, singing my sad song,
Heartbroken I stand here so strong.

Your loving heart gave mine soft beat
The world became tender and sweet
I left life's weeping morose throng
Heartbroken I stand here so strong.

    You came, darkness melted away
An angel that taught me to pray
In hope's purest joy we belong
Heartbroken I stand here so strong.

The Gift And Majesty Of Poetry

Once from deep pen and ink a poet born
sewing together life once sadly torn
from soft Heart, dearest Love and fragrant Breeze
within those spells cast among fairy trees
Imagining those chasms wide and deep
words of rainbow hues, great treasures to keep!

Once he that rhymes true, cast a magic spell
consulting a muse that gems did so tell
as earth spun about and its old soul wept
for all the wondrous beauty Nature kept
Writing as midnight, its toll did so strike
each closing verse became a golden spike!

Once willing spirit dared to give its all
singing forth from word kitchens down the hall
of brilliant rose gardens of pure delight
those so well hidden and those in plain sight
Seeking much more, based on poetry's art
    its kind blessings sacrifices impart!

Once from deep pen and ink a poet born
sewing together life once sadly torn
from soft Heart, dearest Love and fragrant Breeze
within those spells cast among fairy trees
Imagining those chasms wide and deep

Famished And Bleeding This Old Soul Begs This

Woe! Unto days numbered and grief sicken
Love lost saddest of sorrows once stricken
How in dear youth life was merry hours sought
Now in Time's low fading death I am caught!

Alas! Where hides that glory once so bright
    Its dancing gleams illuminating night
Waking in Heavenly skies, moons rebirth
From vast galaxies ancient Gods glowing mirth!

I beg me, this moment to write to shine
Another day to true-claim what is mine
    This creation to wondrously compose
And declare love of poetry I chose!

Mind's eye sees beyond that well hidden door
From radiant dreams eager soul implores
Touch of soft lips once sworn to be my all
Memories fleeting, I beg deep recall!

This heart crying for more, near its last throes
Against curse of ill winds, darkness now blows
Pan, bring cheering music, and sweetest wine
Allow one more night, her love may I dine!

Famished and bleeding this old soul begs this
Sight of her blue eyes and lingering kiss
Smell of her yellow gold hair, its soft curls
Relief from this darkness death too soon hurls!

To Kiss Each Morn, Color Outside The Lines

Once each day brought, only torturous pain
as dull axe, slow cutting against hard grain
Dawn cast shadows that this life did so curse
making me as a rock, in pauper's purse
Yet poetic soul swore to one day heal
to again dance well and truest love feel
To climb a tall mountain and take new flight
light hope's candles, bath in beautiful sight.

As a reborn soul, watch flowers soft blow
await midnight moon, see its wondrous glow
Be a true gift to family and friends
gaze above while making sincere amends
Hear music that sweetest dreams so oft play
humbly bow my head as I kneel to pray
Enjoy echoes of morn's first rooster crow
beg again a shot from Cupid's love bow.

Taste the wine of love and its first soft kiss
recall her smile and all of her I miss
Walk again forested path to our lake
repeat our youthful vows, never forsake
Romance that gave treasures and immense joy
hold firm to a love, life can not destroy
To kiss each morn, color outside the lines
stay on faithful path, pay heed to pure signs.

Daring Universe, Shines Its Glow On Earth

Daring universe, shine its glow on earth
Child prays for all of its pitiful worth
Poverty born, yet bestowed with a gift
Sweet blessing to write verses that uplift
Travelling a road, hardship holding sway
Each morn, her sincerest prayers she would pray.

Blessed, those our Lord holds so very dear
Life's victims broke and living in great fear
Oft alone, against cruel world they face
Living in rags, names easy to erase
No soft, gentle kiss each night before bed
Often so hungry having not been fed.

Looking at a hungry dawn, hope a loss
Dark and savage old world gives not a toss
Shivering, no heat to warm from the cold
Child crying in pain eleven years old
Begging universe today please be kind
Let father today some paying work find.

Watching as mother wash torn clothes by hand
Falling tears, often more than child can stand
Pitiless world races without a care
As weeping child looks on in stone-face stare
Seeing life give others fine, sweeter gifts
Child begins writing verses to uplift.

As blessing of poetry, was there born
Life soon starts to be less dark and forlorn
Pencil and paper found to be fine gifts
Words cast to apathetic world uplift
Dawn soon comes as a treasure of bright light
Life improves, as deep fear comes not each night.

Universe sees and sends forth its soft glow
Further true gifts it may choose to bestow
World finds needed warmth in her golden pen
Her verse becomes famous in world of men
Life had once gave just enough to survive
In her heart, again hope it did revive.

As years flew on by, her pen cast truest ink
Poetry born to cause readers to think
Of the universe and its saddest cold
Shivering to child, eleven years old
And her words asking for kindness and love
In dark universe and heavens above.

With pen she had blazed forth bolder, new trail
With brave heart, she had chosen not to fail
Sincere prayer and poetry gave hope
That Light could penetrate life's darkest scope
Where a child's sweet innocence could be seen
Gifts then given, those dark world so demeans.

The Reality, Deep Betrayal, The Dark War
    (Part One)

They were shadows of Raven King and I
cloaked in raiments* of shimmering black gold
born of dust, river Styx and seeping sky
    comrades of mystical tales retold
Each with armor soaked red in human blood
strong arms formed with Herculean power
razor clawed feet formed from Hade's foulest mud
evil hearts burning with fiery showers!

Sworn to record trips to other abodes
sporting daggers that drip with poison sweet
savage guard dogs, on wicked paths we rode
awaiting victims bones, treasures to eat
Elven armor*, no mortal blade may pierce
they that relish echoes of dying pleas
no other beasts as vicious or as fierce
not even great white sharks of deepest seas!

Betrayal that night my time had foretold
as Raven King set both to take my life
smitten by my darling, Love's depths took hold
I was cursed into Hade's life of strife.
Lost to be soul saved by stroke of Poe's pen
sincere friendship my loyalty his boon
wisdom, mercy greater than other men
promised by Poe, my freedom very soon!

Raven King fearful of such a great vow
raised legions of fallen warriors up
with knowledge, to him Poe would never bow
nor again drink from their lost friendship's cup
Even such strength Raven King dare not trust
for legendary, powers of Poe's ink
victory Raven King knew was a must
even unto his great friend's death he'd sink!

Note: In tribute to Edgar Allen Poe, his legendary
dark power, born from magnificent imagination,
immense insight into the nature of man, his fears,
and the reality that the DARK is there , daring
one to enter if they but dare to do so. Poe did
so enter and his death may have came about because
he never escaped its evil grasp, its immense power
to destroy, especially so, poets that may venture
in far, far too deep! Never venture past the first door...

If In Such Blaze, Your Passion Dwells

If golden verse, seals your desire
in love's truth, you find fire
    in Nature's beauty even more
    rainbow's treasures, a score.

    If poetry, renews your soul
    when life takes heavy toll
your pen and paper, is the key
in verse realms you must flee.

    If romance,its delights are sought
in a rut you are caught
Reading Byron sets heart beats fast
    let soul compose to last.

If sad, lonely nights are you bane
    heart's desires, not insane
    bleed onto paper loving thought
heart's truth, joy may be bought.

If at dawn's rise, you are too sad
want more of what you had
let pen birth your romantic scenes
    shades of a peacock's preen.

If her smile sets soul to delights
    her lips, tantalize nights
her beauty knocks you to the floor
    let verse open love's door.

    If life rewards poetic pen
    wanting love is no sin
her first kiss lit eternal flames
you want her hand, no games.

If in such blaze your passion dwells
with her sight, your heart swells
let poetic pen write that love
    while thanking God above.

If golden verse, seals your desire
in love's truth, you find fire
    in Nature's beauty even more
    rainbow's treasures, a score.

    Note:
Old poem from ancient times it now seems to me.
Decided not to edit, to present as was first composed.
Now forty-two years later, and I still believe in its truth.
See its massive beauty that holds poetry as a shining light.
And find expressing heart's truth is always right

Time To Ponder This World And So Much More

Within dreams that this soul truly adores
Where mountain ridges highlight bright sun's glow
Green valleys below, lakes with sandy shores
Life content as blessed happiness pours-
Pathways that a true, sincere seeker treads
Lined with beautiful flowers shining bright
Gems dancing within Mother Nature's beds
In this earthly realm, a glorious sight.

Morning's promise, day with radiant rays
Time to ponder this world and so much more
All the better, if one will learn to pray
Eye opening deep truth, never a bore-
Such rich treasures to found, if one but looks
Beyond those tragic shadows this world casts
So much more to find, far beyond school books
Love's deep truth, richer life, that truly lasts.
