I watched this yesterday as a guest. My father would enjoy this. That's a sweet plane!! I think my Dad's favorite was a P something Mustang, P51 maybe? He always takes videos/pics and sends them to me as he loves to go to the flying shows. But hell, getting in one of the suckers and riding, that's awesome. Its cool to have a cockpit view too. Even on a regular passenger plane, I always wonder what the cockpit view is.

But these older ones are a little scary in comparison. I was waiting for the engine to give out or for a wing to fall off. I would have a serious anxiety attack if I ever went on one of them.

the P-51 Mustang. came stock with US made allison engine. but it was to slow for the brits so they dropped in a rolls royce merlin engine and the 51 made history

Yep. The Rolls Royce Merlin really brought the Mustang to it's full potential with 2,000 HP turbo-charged goodness, if I recall right.

Another big bonus to those wonderful engines was it gave them the capability to climb as high as the bombers for escort missions over Germany, and with the drop-tanks for added range, could make the full round trip and provide cover for the bombers. Prior to that, the bombers only had partial fighter cover and were getting decimated over their targets in Germany after the fighter escorts had to turn back due to lack of fuel.

The Mosquito was a beautiful plane as well, and was very tough despite being made of wood... there was a shortage of aluminum when it was being built. And it was fast, very fast. They really shined for recon missions and submarine patrol.

Damn, I wonder what kind of times you would get in the 1/4 if you put that sucker in a car?

Depends on the car, but probably something like 8s@180mph. Top fuel dragsters produce better than 8000hp to hit 4.5s at 300+mph. I feel like I heard of some ideal ratio that, ignoring weight, traction and aerodynamics, doubling the speed takes 3 times the power.
