Passenger plane with 295 aboard shot down over Ukraine

A passenger plane with 295 people on board has been shot down as it flew above eastern Ukraine, according to aviation sources.

The Malaysia Airlines plane, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported.

The Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said.

The adviser said the 280 passengers and 15 crew members who were on the plane are all believed to have died.

A spokesman for Malaysian Airlines, still reeling from the loss of flight MH370 in March, confirmed it had lost contact with flight MH17, which departed from Amsterdam at 12.14pm local time.

The flight disappeared from radar as it flew over Ukrainian airspace, the spokesman said.

Sky's Katie Stallard, in Moscow, said media reports suggest the plane came down in the Donetsk region, where there has been recent heavy fighting amid continuing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

KIEV, Ukraine (CBSDC/AP) – An adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister says a Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people has been shot down over a town in the east of the country.

Anton Gerashenko says on his Facebook page the Boeing 777 plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit Thursday by a missile fired from a Buk launcher.

The plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur before it went down, according to Reuters.

Interfax reports that the Ukrainian Interior Ministry says that everyone on board was killed.

A source told Interfax that the plane “began to drop, afterwards it was found burning on the ground on Ukrainian territory.”

A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

295 people dead - I heard possibly that 23 of them may be Americans. Obama was kind enough to mention the plane being brought down for about 30 seconds of his speech and then it was back to regularly scheduled programming from him.

Russian separatists speaking about this right after it happened. The very same guy also took credit originally on social media, only to remove it moments later when it turned out to be a passenger plane. Word has it that Russia took the black boxes and are assisting in spoiling the wreck scene. Also, there is footage out there of a BUK missile carrier being driven out of the country and back into Russia.

The apparent known terrorist - Igor Stelkov. What he wrote on social media right after the missile hit:

"Message from the militia:

"In the district of Torez an An-26 was just shot down. It crashed somewhere near the Progress mine. We warned them not to fly in "our skies". Here is video confirmation of the latest "fallen bird". The bird landed outside the residential zone, no peaceful civilians were injured."

This was of course deleted moments later when it was discovered they just killed 298 innocent people.

Waking up late this morning, I caught US representative to UN speaking forcefully on the shoot down. She basically said that the same type of missiles had been revealed in a cache last week, complaints and sanctions were already being discussed. The missiles were from Russia and the separatists were looking for people qualified to use them, tanks, etc. Now with the specifics of he plane, that the black boxes need to be turned over to international experts; crime scene must be maintained, etc., etc.

She sounded just as the US should sound, leading.

Now Obama is supposed to be speaking in minutes, if on time.

All I can think of is, Syria and how Obama failed to lead and Putin filled that void.
