I saw the Missouri once, she was docked at Bremerton back in about '97 or '98.

It was awesome to see such an important piece of history, and her lines as I looked at her head-on from the Bayliner gave me chills - sleek, powerful, deadly and massive! I think she had just been decommissioned from her duty in Desert Storm.

I was most fortunate to see one do her thing in Nam. the New Jersey

Stupidest thing the US ever did was mothball the battleships. The best rolling artillery platforms in the US military. It cost pennies on the thousands of dollars to use them instead of aviation bombs and or landing and placing troops and artillery and support for it.

yes the best weapons platform ever made. but in Nam the New Jersey required its own replenishment fleet. they were built for wartime economy. its cost over a million a day just to keep the NJ afloat and operating. that's why we sent her home

I'm no engineer but i wondered why they didn't replace those fuel guzzling engines with nukes. the fuel savings alone keeps them in service. plus Reagan upgraded the electronics, fire control and weapons systems.
and their very low mileage. like grandma's car that was only driven to church. add to it their paid for. we have the titles.

Reagan did update their electronics, but they are STILL analog. They'd have to be updated to digital for anyone in the Navy now to understand them. I'm old. I'd spend the money. For the reasons I previously mentioned; and,

the shear fear that battle wagon puts into the hearts of wannabe enemies when they're looking at it sitting off their coast.

back then they used a drone for recon instead of the ole king fisher aircraft. seems to me the Iraqi's were filmed waving white flags an bed sheets at the drone. they knew what was coming.

Jeff, and all. For what it's worth here on this topic. I had several Radiomen friends on the Wisconsin, and the New Jersey. And they all bragged a lot about when the ship Fired all three MOUNTS at the same time. What you call a BROADSIDE. Believe it or not. The Entire ship moved SIDEWAYS in the water about SIX feet.

If you've ever been near, or within any short distance from one of our former Battleships during gunnery exercises. YOU NEVER FORGET the sound. NEVER!
