I never understood why people put sweaters on their dogs. Even when it's -30 out, dogs do just fine outside, let alone making him wear one inside the house.

    Is it a "cute" thing?

I love bulldogs. Damn shame the way the breeders have flattened their faces that way...

Fact of the matter is, breeders have pretty much fucked up the breed...

I love that there is an ongoing effort to restore the breed to its original beauty...

I don't have any experience with Bulldogs except for a neighbor I had once that had an incredibly stupid Bulldog. He was a big white one, and his name was Winston (naturally).

That fucker would stand in the back yard and bark. Barwrf! Barwrf! Barwrf! He once did that for 12 hours straight during the day when his stupid owner left him out and went out of town for a day, and I was working nights... yelling at him only made him bark more, so after about the 12th hour of nonstop barking at literally nothing (I checked, he was looking around in the sky randomly as he did it), I jumped out of bed and went down to Sportsman's Warehouse and got myself a nifty semi-automatic CO2 BB pistol.

It was only about 300 FPS, I got the weak one because I didn't want to hurt him... just wanted to shut his stupid ass up.

15 BBs later as fast as I could empty that clip, he was in his friggin doghouse. Yes, he did STFU, and he was a good neighbor after that. I named him Pellet.

That is so awesome and so true. Picture that dog all black and that's the little bastard I have! When you see them starting to give you "the eye" from the corner of their eyes, you pissed him off and you're about to get it.

You just ruined everything I ever knew about my most favorite dog. The only reason I ended up with a Pug, besides the $2500 price tag on the Bulldog, was the life expectancy of only 5-7 years. I wanted them for that smooshed in face! I believe I have even seen Bulldogs with the differences you point out but assumed they were slightly different breeds. They are so friendly too! Slobbery and messy and smelly, but loyal and funny!!

Isn't there a rule somewhere that all bulldogs must be named Winston?

Jeff had one, his name was "Bubba". What was the name of the one that Matthau was feeding Hormel chili in "Grumpy Old Men"?

Reminded me of this story: During a SWAT standoff in Phoenix, a pug picked a fight with a police dog.

^^ Saw that video of the Pug already, that's hilarious, and he would have gotten eaten! My Pug is a little dumb like that too, but too old now. But my Chihuahua, that police dog woulda gotten tore up, my little 'ese' don't play no games!

It's funny what breeders and clubs decide are desirable in the breeds. That short life expectancy is a direct result of the breeding for features. Many English bulldogs have heart defects as a result, as well as other genetic disorders. Here's an interesting piece about breeding English bulldogs:

The Known Advantages of "Hybrid Breeding"
(And Why It's Illegal to Marry Your Cousin... Even if She's Really Pretty)
A dog breeder's treatise in opposition to commonly promoted dog breeding practices

I love the breed as well, Jim. I just hate what they've done to it. For what it's worth, it is the Pug that they have used to breed the bulldog to where it is now... So you kind of have a bulldog.
