I found this Op/Ed on the situation and I think the author shares my views. This is a stupid story and, as the author states, the reaction is worse than the deed itself.

...What the HELL is wrong with us, as a people? If somebody wants to be a racist, but is not otherwise infringing upon the rights, freedoms of others? Who gives a shit.

This is a free speech issue. The university has now crossed a line and can and should be sued for millions for taking the punitive actions against those students.
Speech , even offensive speech is protected under the right of free speech..
Now that the university has expelled two students its liable under law for making those punitive actions.
I hope it is sued for at least 100 million dollars.
