Default Sonnets: Some think the Greatest Poetry Form

A thread to present sonnets. A poetry form some poets never master and some even fear to try..
Myself, I delight in them and have won many contest placing my sonnet against various other poems in other forms.

    Sonnets:

The Deadest Hope In The World

The deadest hope in the world to hold
To be truly youthful when one is old
To race about with eager quickened pace
Innocent smile upon a softened face,
Willing hands to love yet again,
The envy of many jealous, fellow men
A finer vessel sleek, pure and true
Charming lady dancing along with you!

    Adorned with steadfast heroic words,
Flying free of earth like the birds,
Wandering into majesty of the clouds
Far away from teeming earthbound crowds
A God sailing alone in the night sky,
Enjoying a blessing, not asking why!

    Hope Cooks Its Morning Meal

Dark shadows of death it enshrouds,
    roaring lightning in storming clouds
Flames it destroys as it dares burn
Hope lives and truly enjoys its turn

Sunset may cloak beauty of the hills
    long before creeping dawn-time chills
Yet its mercy screams out very loud
candlelight given unto good and proud

Deep in morn's lingering misty fogs
echoes songs of glistening waking frogs
Far above the ancient nighttime croaks
    angels remove earthly blinding cloaks

At the head of the cool, gurgling brooks
Hope sits to eat lively, the meal it cooks!

    Tank you Tyr-Ziu Saxnot!
This is Great to start a day from reading your poetry.
Indifferent alike to praise or blame
Give heed, O Muse, but to the voice Divine
Fearing not injury, nor seeking fame,
    Nor casting pearls to swine.

Shall I Remember Father's Longing Soul

I'm tired of living in this ancient dark hell,
With evil, sins and smells of eating hate.
Shall I journey to much better wastelands afar
An escape before death proves me too late?

I'll race into the forests of pain and gloom,
Seeker of Life's longings and great treasures.
No fear of the unknown hand and waiting doom,
An adventurer chasing deep love and pleasures!

Or take the next fork to lands far and unknown,
A risk worthy of all my hot, flowing blood.
Each path another clue my mind blessedly shown.
Into my searching heart each a river in flood.

This valley holds deep my father's longing soul.
This farm won, he paid in sweet blood its high toll!

A Religion That MURDERS All That Oppose Its Course

Expand your horizons they say, as we righteously dread.
Punitive actions given for words we long ago said.
Wise up and know such enemies live within our midst.
Those traitors putting our names upon a punishing list.

Do not fear such hiding and lowlife coward's secret plans.
Unite and record they and their insidious deeds.
Stay the course, honor truth and fight the good fight.
Teach fear is a double edged sword they too may yet feel.

Expand your horizons they say, as we righteously dread.
Punitive actions given for words we long ago said.
Wise up and know such enemies live within our midst.
Those traitors putting our names upon a punishing list.

Understand this, we shall soon see their darkest face.
As we and our children they plan to murder and erase.

My Love Lives In A Maiden's Fallen Tear

I saw sweet love in maiden's fallen tear
a racing orb of light so very bright.
A love lost, great tragedy so many fear
as small children do darkness of night.

If only to live and not be too late
for the appointed day that I died.
Mend the widening cracks in my plate
careful to eat my stolen eggs fried.

Should a poet compose for me a monody
I shall rise again just to hear.
For my sweet soul fled my tortured body
but my love lives in a maiden's tear.

Will I ever hear sweet song sung in tune.
Or peacefully sleep beneath crescent moon?

    Robert J. Lindley, 10-25-2015

Note-Tried to go to sleep, but that wicked muse
of mine, demanded just one more! And it had to
    be a sonnet!

I Cried For My Father's Death

I cried for my father's death then
but never for my own cutting pain
That was not understood back when
I felt my life had nothing to gain.

Life taught me few things are fair
misery and pain follow every gift
Although young with full head of hair
life gave nothing to spirit uplift.

Often in awe of power of the storm
we forget the damage such inflicts
Such folly too often is the norm
sadly man's Nature allows such tricks.

Time onward flows as old wounds it heals
Life does reward those, Love's heart steals!

    Untitled Sonnet

I sat lost in deep thought to write today,
memories flooding an old poet's mind.
So little time, so important words to say
hoping to be hopeful, helpful and kind!

My muse, she went sailing around the world,
often for me that is a pure delight.
In my tired old mind words are now swirled,
yet my inner spirit longs to fight.

Do I write of past loves and desperate lies,
heartache eating away cold hard stone?
Or perhaps better, of brightest sunny skies,
that warm this surging heart to the bone!

Ah, too many words invade this weary mind.
Off to sleep and write in dreams I often rewind.

Robert J. Lindley, written in 91'

Note today , an untitled sonnet written back in '91..
perhaps placed aside for later editing, however
the older me now boldly says it is ok as is..
citing author's privilege.. Also thinking title
should reflect past and present case..

    Glorious Moon

Lonely night I search for light of new moon
sadness absent, seek its comfort so soon
When weak are joys, hopes strewn across my path
wash soul in wetness of celestial bath

Worse are nights that despair crowds deeply in
dark blocks memories of lovers and friends
Salvation beams down Old Man in the Sky
igniting love as tears drop from my eyes

Shadows flee from beams of inspired moonlight
wash my heart in love that vanishes fright
Spirit offers, moonlight joy as its gift
rays of happiness blessings soon uplift

Blessed nights, crystal skies serve the moon
music fills my heart, I dance to its tune.

    Heart and Wisdom of Olympus

I flew to Olympus, to find its heart
armor intact against Hades' dark wrath.
At birth the power of light made its start
as Homer's ghost sent me upon my path!

Yet there I found only an empty throne
where once Zeus in glory firmly reigned.
So sad! For no lighted wisdom was shown.
Such that grievous and blue, my heart was pained!

The pain and the sorrow! Where was the heart?
I fell to my knees beseeching the Gods.
Supreme and great Zeus why did you depart?
Perhaps it was Titans, the elder gods.

Then, Callioppe came for her father,
And Themis, the divine man was bidden,
Saying, Zeus gave his heart to his lover,
Seeker be still, wisdom I have hidden!

Note: Note: It was indeed my great pleasure collaborating
with my friend Broken Wings on this poem. Her concluding
verses are amazing and brought in the goddess Aphrodite,
to note the darker side of love that we all know exists.
Broken Wings, my good friend you have my sincere thanks
and it was a very great pleasure collaborating with you.

    Thunder Gives Its Preceding Applause

    The Rain gifts blessings multi-fold,
aided by its sister Wind, earth reaps.
    Bounties plentiful, harvests gold ,
as into awaiting soil it seeps.

Fields cry for the coming spray,
showers sent to man and beast.
If withheld we begin to truly pray,
so that we live and may have a feast.

Echoes in Heaven announce the Rain,
    thunder gives its preceding applause.
A gift, same as in our births pain,
we must conform to Nature's laws.

Skies above gift this blessing down.
    Upon earth's thirsty, waiting gown.

    Robert J. Lindley, 07-18-2015

    Note-
Nature's gift, this bounty we receive,
Gods love, even as Satan deceives
Look up to give returning praise,
for from death only He was ever raised...

Autumn Revisited , A Look Back

Sitting on mossy stone, I watch Autumn fly
    no respite from Winter's friend
Over heading the wild birds soar on by
almost time for this season's end.

This stream , banks covered in green moss
shall very soon flow deeper and cold
This forest will reflect more of this loss
musings I find deeper as I grow old!

What of the sunny Summer days, memory fair?
a short gust in a fast receding storm
Bears scouting for coming Winter's hiding lair
survival searching now is the prime norm.

As Autumn prepares for Winter's hard blast
Slowing moving Time suddenly races so fast!

    Robert J. Lindley, 08-13-2015

Note--Time to dread Winter. This seasonal apprehension
goes back to my childhood. Back then Winters were
brutal on we kids without coats and proper protection
from its blasts.. Yet we survived and later prospered.

Well of Memory Calls My Heart And Soul

Well of Memory, sweet love thoughts I treasure

holding great loves and joys beyond measure

Mere moment's thought summons up such delights

to soothe my lonely spirit on the darkest nights.

Without those my life would be so dead and dry

much like an calm ocean without a blue sky

I perish the thought, birth not such a nightmare

bring not my early death by such a scare!

I seek to happily live to a happy and ripe old age

vanquish my greatest fears, conquer my epic rage

Pray I, travel on while deeply, serenely sleeping

Be long gone before the heartache and sad weeping.

Longings of heart and mind upon illness and old age.

Imaginations soaring, seeking solace within last page.

With Glowing Soft Colors In Rainbow Hues

Romantic night of given heart, my sweet
whatever shall dearest life truly be?
Your softest touch and gentle heartbeat,
mermaid swimming in my romantic sea.

I hold only dreams of your beating heart
with glowing soft colors in rainbow hues.
Praying daily that we shall never part
that my life never meets such dreaded blues.

May we live lost within your finest dance
while sleeping beside meadow flowers glow.
Your love dwells in finest, purest romance,
in a blessed gift joined, I pray to know.

Your dance swept me completely off my feet.
Forever my life joined with your heartbeat.

Into A Mottled Shade I Sought My Rest

Into a mottled shade I sought my rest
As I trekked into my favorite woods.
Here I was but an uninvited guest
Seeking Nature's truth, not man's falsehoods!

Walking upon an ancient forest floor
Among towering oaks and ancient beech
Always with joy, seeking very much more
And knowledge that my longing soul will teach.

Stream flowing over soft green, mossy rocks
All about evidence of time's slow creep
Here no need for rushing schedules or clocks
As we can commune with Nature so deep!

Beautiful trees swaying with a soft wind.
And I, yet again find my ancient friend!
