in those days they had stress fracture problems on those big long boats. on the lakes and at sea. that's what I think happened IMO. they are land locked to. to big big to fit thru the locks so they spend their entire service life on the lakes. the fitz ran head long into a 3 headed monster

Yes, and looking at the picture with my untrained eye, it actually looks like the boat already has structural problems in the middle. If anyone's ever read the book "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell, he presents a theory that sometimes a subconscious 2-second impression can be more accurate than a full blown inspection. If only the inspector had read the book...
