Default The Hater's Guide to the Coast Guard

This is the last in a series about how branches of the military hate on each other. We featured all branches of the U.S. military, written by veterans of that branch being brutally honest with themselves and their services.

We are NOT ridiculously mean to each other. Y'all deserve all the beatin's y'all get.

Take us out on some tin can in the middle the ocean trying to see who you can get sick. Might as well send us to San Quentin for all the freedom we have.

I had a few days like that on the much smaller 210, USCGC Venturous.

I have lost my mind. If found, please give it a snack and return it?

I actually got my best bench press ever on board the USS Boxer. And no, it was NOT rolling in my favor.

As a 30 year Navy man. I never had any hatred, or anger for the Coast Guard. As for those photos of Listing ships. My first ship in 1965 was the LASALLE LPD-3, a flat bottom gator. And I remember the competitions we had on the main deck passageways in Heavy Seas, where many of us tried to get as many FOOTPRINTS on the passageway bulkheads before the ship leveled out for a few seconds.

Then, later on. I served aboard the USS DAHLGREN DDG-43 (actually a longer TIN CAN to sailors). And it wasn't unusual to be in heavy seas that threatened to capsize the ship many times.

That was where the new guys either learned to survive, or they spent days GREEN, and NOT HUNGRY.

USS Cleveland (LPD). I HATED that damned boat. I wanted to kill everyone on it before we were 30 days out. Nothing worse than getting stuck with a bunch of whiny, immature brats complaining about everything in a 10x10 "cell". You'd have thought the world had ended for them.

My biggest wish was that someone would bring back that old flat-bottom USS Juneau and put their asses on it so they could see what REAL ride was like. Those things don't cut water, they bounce on it.

Hey, big deal. I survived THIS ship last May! In the rough waters of the Mediterranean, no less.

The 210 class. Let's take a 378 and cut a "chunk" out of it.

And the bastardization didn't stop there. Designed to use helo's to extend it's "reach", the ships had no stacks. Exhaust was piped through the hull and out the stern, making life miserable for the DC's (who's shop was in the path of said exhaust) and the Bosn's who had to scrub the stern from said exhaust

Not one of my top qualities, I have to admit. Not when I run in panic from a wasp!

Although childbirth without pain meds requires a certain amount of bravery.

That ship's got to be taller than it drafts. That's just asking for it, IMO. I know people say it's okay because they stay in the "calm" waters of the Caribbean, but guess where all the hurricanes go?
