'No rhyme or reason' for machete attack at Ohio restaurant

    By KANTELE FRANKO

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- From the front door, the man with the machete didn't have a straight path to people in the booths at the small suburban restaurant. He stepped by the welcoming greeting on the front glass, past the half-wall entryway divider and the display case of kataifi and other Mediterranean pastries.

Immediately, police said, he started swinging.

"There was no rhyme or reason as to who he was going after," said Sgt. Rich Weiner, a Columbus police spokesman.

By the time it was over, four adults were wounded and the attacker was dead, shot by police in a confrontation a few miles away.

Columbus police identified the attacker as 30-year-old Mohamed Barry. They didn't give a hometown for him, and his background isn't immediately clear.

It's unclear what motivated the Thursday evening attack at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli. Columbus police confirmed they're working with federal authorities on the investigation.

"Lone individual, machete, going into a public place, committing an assault on people that he apparently does not know," Columbus Deputy Chief Michael Woods said. "Those are the things that give us concern and those are things we wanted to answer right away."

Information connected to the registration of the suspect's car triggered an alert that required contacting the local terrorism task force, including the FBI, Weiner said.

Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said the man wasn't known to police.

Owner Hany Baransi told The Columbus Dispatch he believes his restaurant was targeted because he is Israeli. But FBI Special Agent Rick Smith told the newspaper it's too early in the investigation to jump to any conclusions.

Police credited the employees and patrons with acting quickly and observantly to fend off the man and help authorities catch him. Some threw chairs at the attacker, who'd been there about a half hour earlier but left after a conversation with an employee, and someone scuffled with the man before he fled in a car, Weiner said.

Minutes later, a 911 caller reported that he'd been hit by a car in the area and that "a long weapon flew up in the air after he hit us."

Police said witnesses at the restaurant had great descriptions of the suspect's vehicle and a bit of video that provided partial license plate information. That helped authorities track down and confront the man near the large Easton Town Center shopping complex. The suspect, who had the machete in one hand and a knife in the other, was fatally shot by police after officers unsuccessfully tried to use a stun gun to stop him and he lunged, Weiner said.

Police said a 54-year-old man hurt at the restaurant remained hospitalized in critical but stable condition Friday. Another man and woman, both 43, were in stable condition. The fourth victim, a 43-year-old man, had been treated and released.

Twelve hours after the attack, the police tape and cruisers were gone outside the closed restaurant in a small strip mall. Overturned dining chairs and dark-stained pieces of paper towels and cloth littered the floor.

Next to the door, under the glow of a neon sign advertising gyros, remained the printed sign with the Arabic greeting: "Ahlan Wa Sahlan." Or, roughly, "You are welcome to our place."

Law enforcement sources close to the investigation into a machete attack at an Ohio restaurant told Fox News Friday that federal authorities are investigating the incident as a potential lone wolf terror attack.

FBI investigators have not yet found any evidence to suggest the attack was directed by Islamic State or any other foreign terror organization, but federal authorities are still running down the possibility that Mohammad Barry was inspired by terrorist propaganda.

Columbus police identified Barry, 30, as the attacker at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli. Barry entered the restaurant Thursday night and wounded four patrons before being killed by police in a confrontation a few miles away.

It’s unclear what motivated Barry’s attack. Columbus police confirmed Friday they’re working with federal authorities on the investigation but have not said why.

I think what we need here is common sense Machete control reforms. There's just too many unregistered ones out there.

On the 11th, the FBI began to investigate, partially due to the owner being Israeli:

Yeah, the Israeli owner was the target here. I read somewhere that the muzzie was asking where the owner was before the attack.

Unfortunately, a whole bunch of other muzzies just became aware of this Israeli's presence and his business. I wouldn't be surprised to see follow-up atrocities.

I don't have the time to search for a link I've previously used to FBI stats on religious based attacks. Jews are by far the largest target, Muslims far behind.

Seems Obama should be made aware of this, no? He seems to believe that the majority of hate crimes regarding religion are Muslim targeted.

I think the answer, Tyr, is that it's not so much an unwillingness to call it a terrorist attack in the media (well, SOME media outlets), it's that they don't want to call it and then have egg on their face if it's not the case.

We've seen what happens when it's called wrong. CAIR goes ballistic, the White House issues condemning statements, the usual suspects in Congress moan about prejudice, Facebook idiots start a movement and change their picture (yep, THAT'LL fix it) and protest marches around the country at your normal liberal campuses shouting about islamophobia and a media circus interviewing every imam they can scrape up to talk about how they're persecuted.

I see the wisdom in holding off until the FBI or local cops start making noises after a day or two about terrorists. It's hard on the credibility when they're wrong.

Yeah, I read something about that, too. Forgot to post it.

Jews are by far and away the most targeted group for hate crime, and you never see that talked about. Instead, the group that commits the vast majority are crying foul with the enthusiastic support of the media and politicians.... it's enough to make a guy seriously look into conspiracy theories.

Jews are 4 times more likely to be attacked than the next attacked group...
Yet the leftist media screams only about the muslims.
They do their very best to keep that glaring truth in the dark.
And so does our damn government.. Our government is in dire need of a major overhaul IMHO.
We have over 50+ years of the insane rot and infesting germs of liberalism/socialism that needs to be

If that means heads should roll, so be it.
Survival often dictates that brutal actions reverse long term rot/deceit and manipulations/etc.

I agree with NT that it makes sense to be circumspect before drawing conclusions about motivation. What I would like to see is the media follow up on these stories with the same depth and breadth of coverage, once it is determined.

But no, the stories then seem to just fade away.

That --"fading way"-- clearly points to the major motivation for not presenting the truth sooner IMHO..
IT IS CLEARLY POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IN ACTION ON BOTH COUNTS METHINKS.
We have seen often how they find out the next day but withhold the evidence(truth) until it is actually forced out of them.
