Working on it and looking into it, you know that!!
They reported a kernel issue... server issue yesterday, and of course said it was fixed. The site continued to be slow after that, although back to normal for some periods. I've been in contact with the host of course, initially to get them to get us back online. But I've seen the slowness as well, and it drives me nuts. I've kept the ticket open. Coincidentally I had just updated it once again just a few minutes ago, letting them know that things are continuing to bog down for all of us. Hopefully I'll get a response sooner than later, and hopefully it's something they can fix easily.
What I'm more nervous about is if this ultimately leads to a server move/update. Often they will do a rebuild and then restore from backups. My experience is that they take forever and can be nightmares. But this is me just jumping to conclusions at this point.
This is what they are saying happened yesterday:
A kernel panic (sometimes abbreviated as KP[1]) is an action taken by an operating system upon detecting an internal fatal error from which it cannot safely recover. The term is largely specific to Unix and Unix-like systems; for Microsoft Windows operating systems the equivalent term is "stop error" (or, colloquially, "Blue Screen of Death").
The kernel routines that handle panics, known as
panic()
in AT&T-derived and BSD Unix source code, are generally designed to output an error message to the console, dump an image of kernel memory to disk for post-mortem debugging and then either wait for the system to be manually rebooted, or initiate an automatic reboot.[2] The information provided is of a highly technical nature and aims to assist a system administrator or software developer in diagnosing the problem. Kernel panics can also be caused by errors originating outside of kernel space. For example, many Unix OSes panic if the init process, which runs in userspace, terminates.

I just noticed, I can click on the 'recent thanks' link on the navbar above - with no thanks - and just click it to view older ones, over and over and over - and no delay. But when I receive a thanks or 2, that's when it seems to take forever to load.
I told all you bastards I was getting old and going blind!
So it turns out there is an update for the "thanks" system we use, which I just installed. I honestly don't know all/any fixes it makes. But the thanks system was definitely responding slower and slower at times, and at times even causing errors. Then it also affected the entire board due to this. If someone else was waiting forever to check their thanks, and another person did a search at the same time, that also could have given the 2nd person an error instead of their results.
So the update is installed. Hopefully throughout the day we can see if the response of the checking of the thanks is still flaky, or if it helps stabilize using the board at all.
Slow again for me today. Anyone else?
