Default Song lyrics that are poetry

    Song Lyrics--- that are poetry.....
    Hold On Loosely
    by 38 Special

You see it all around you
    Good lovin' gone bad
And usually it's too late when you
    Realize what you had

And my mind goes back to a girl I left
Long years ago who told me

    Just hold on loosely
    But don't let go
    If you cling too tightly
    You're gonna lose control

Your baby needs someone to believe in
And a whole lot of space to breathe in

    It's so damn easy
    When your feelings are such
    To overprotect her
    To love her too much

And my mind goes back to a girl I left
Long years ago who told me

    Just hold on loosely
    But don't let go
    If you cling too tightly
    You're gonna lose control

Your baby needs someone to believe in
And a whole lot of space to breathe in

    Don't let her slip away
    Sentimental fool
Don't let your heart get in the way
    Yeah, yeah, yeah

You see it all around you
    Good lovin' gone bad
And usually it's too late when you
    Realize what you had

    So hold on loosely
    But don't let go
    If you cling too tightly
    You're gonna lose control

Your baby needs someone to believe in
And a whole lot of space to breathe in

    So hold on loosely
    But don't let go
    If you cling too tightly
    You're gonna lose it
    You're gonna lose control

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    So hold on loosely
    But don't let go
    If you cling too tightly
    You're gonna lose control

    Hold on loosely
    But don't let go
If you cling too tightly to her
You're gonna lose control, yeah, yeah, yeah

My first wife was insanely crazy about this song. I was 19 and she was 21, and she was hotter than a 5 dollar pistol.
She always said--that song is about us.
Sadly, I found out that she was correct.
I just wasn't into sharing anything, especially not her..
OK, SHE DID JUST FINE UNTIL SHE DID ANOTHER ROUND OF DRUGS WHEN I WAS AT WORK --THEN IT WAS A DISAPPEAR ACT AND PARTY TIME.
FINALLY I HAD TO CUT THAT LOOSE..
That hippie free love might have been ok- if the couple were not already husband and wife(not that we ever did that before we married-we didn't).
But marriage means faithfulness or else why get married?
She tried a dozen times but the lure/addiction of drugs were too strong.
Sad, I hear now she is in very bad shape health-wise.
But life marches on and we pay for the life and way we lived..Tyr

    JOHNNY CASH LYRICS

    "Big River"

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry,
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

I met her accidentally in St. Paul (Minnesota).
And it tore me up every time I heard her drawl, Southern drawl.
Then I heard my dream was back Downstream cavortin' in Davenport,
And I followed you, Big River, when you called.

Then you took me to St. Louis later on (down the river).
A freighter said she's been here but she's gone, boy, she's gone.
I found her trail in Memphis, but she just walked up the block.
She raised a few eyebrows and then she went on down alone.

Now, won't you batter down by Baton Rouge, River Queen, roll it on.
Take that woman on down to New Orleans, New Orleans.
Go on, I've had enough; dump my blues down in the gulf.
She loves you, Big River, more than me.

Now I taught the weeping willow how to cry, cry, cry
And I showed the clouds how to cover up a clear blue sky.
And the tears that I cried for that woman are gonna flood you Big River.
Then I'm gonna sit right here until I die.

I admire no singer (country or rock n roll) more than I do Johnny Cash(a country born, Southern man), who came from a poor background and inspired the world with his writings, singing and redemptive life..-Tyr

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS LYRICS

    "I Won't Back Down"

Well I won't back down, no I won't back down
You could stand me up at the gates of hell
    But I won't back down

Gonna stand my ground, won't be turned around
And I'll keep this world from draggin' me down
Gonna stand my ground and I won't back down

    [Chorus:]
Hey baby, there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
    And I won't back down

Well I know what's right, I got just one life
In a world that keeps on pushin' me around
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down

Hey baby there ain't no easy way out
Hey I will stand my ground
    And I won't back down
    No, I won't back down
    -----------------------------

This song when it first came out, I could have swore he had written about me..
This is poetry set to music my friends.
And of course I can not say enough good words about Tom Petty , as I think he is perhaps the greatest all around musical genius that the modern world has ever produced.
He and his band have been in my top 20 best bands list since they made the big time and started their string of classic hits!
Here is another one that reaches deep inside of me. Its about a Southern man. -Tyr

    "Southern Accents"

There's a southern accent, where I come from
The young 'uns call it country, the yankees call it dumb
I got my own way of talking, but everything gets done
With a southern accent, where I come from

Now that drunk tank in Atlanta, is just a motel room to me
Think I might go work Orlando, if them orange groves don't freeze
Got my own way of working, but everything is run
With a southern accent, where I come from

For just a minute there I was dreaming
For just a minute it was all so real
For just a minute she was standing there, with me

There's a dream I keep having, where my momma comes to me
And kneels down over by the window, and says a prayer for me
Got my own way of praying, but everything one's begun
With a southern accent, where I come from

Got my own way of living, but everything is done
With a southern accent, where I come from

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

THAT SONG HAS BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES, ITS BEAUTY REACHES INTO MY CORE AND MELTS A PART OF ME.
A terrible thing for a man to admit as its a sign of weakness, SOMETHING I'VE SPENT MY ENTIRE LIFE KILLING..
Yet there is no killing that part of me. I think of my father and the tears flow.... as they are now doing...-Tyr

    Lyrics

    Mary Jane's Last Dance

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin' momma who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night

Well she moved down here at the age of 18
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd se en
I was introduced and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you baby but I got to keep movin'"
    On, keep movin' on

    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm
    Tired of this town again

Well I don't know what I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwing up, I'm tired of goin' down
I'm tire of myself, I'm tired of this town
Oh my my, oh hell yes
Honey put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song,
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long

    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm
    Tired of this town again

There's pigeons down in market square
    She's standin' in her underwear
Lookin' down from a hotel room
    Nightfall will be comin' soon
Oh my my, oh hell yes
You've got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up al one
I hit the last number, I walked to the road

    Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm
    Tired of this town again

Always enjoy listing to Alex Turners lyrics (Arctic Monkey / Last Shadow Puppets)

    "Dance Little Liar"

I heard the truth was built to bend
A mechanism to suspend the guilt
Is what you are requiring still
You've got to dance little liar

Just like those fibbs that pop and fizz
And you'll be forced to take that awful quiz
    And you're bound to trip
And she'll detect the fiction on
Your lips and dig a contradiction up

And the clean coming will hurt
And you can never get it spotless
When there's dirt beneath the dirt
The liar take a lot less time

I'm sure it's clear and plain to see
Its not an alibi you need just yet
Oh no it's something for those beads of sweat
Yes that well get you back to normal

And after you have dabbed the patch you'll grieve
And then proceed to scratch the varnish off
    That newly added calmness
So as not to raise any alarms too soon

And the clean coming will hurt
And you can never get it spotless
When there's dirt beneath the dirt

The liar takes a lot less-
Time to decide on his saunter
    Have you got itchy bones
And in all your time alone
Can you hack your mind being riddled
    With the wrong memories

And the clean coming will hurt
And you can never get it spotless
When there's dirt between the dirt

If you also agree that an animals suffering should be avoided rather than encouraged, consider what steps you can take.

Those are truly superb verses. I would have liked to have seen a bit better rhyming but the author's right to concentrate less on the rhyming is noted by me...-Tyr

    American Pie
    Don McLean

    Lyrics

    A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music
    Used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
    But February made me shiver
    With every paper I'd deliver
    Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
    I can't remember if I cried when I
    Read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
    The day the music
    Died

So bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n' Rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now do you believe in rock and roll?
Can music save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
    The day the music died

I started singin' bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n' Rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Now, for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rolling stone
But, that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
    The courtroom was adjourned
    No verdict was returned
And while Lennon read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
    The day the music died

We were singin' bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n' Rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

    Bye, bye Miss American Pie

It doesn't read very well, but when sung the rhymes fall into place.

another - This time Alex Turner and Miles Kane (another incredible song writer and composer)

    'Black Plant'

    He bit your lip
    And on the tip
    Of your tongue
    Was your view
    The heavy belt
    With how you felt
    In ways
    That suited you

    The paper cuts
    From the love letters
    You never gave him
    Could not meet
    Your new found needs
    Of misbehaving

    Why
    Why would you say sorry
    Oh, why would you say
    Why would you say

    You said there
Was a nagging lack of smiles
    When dancing on your back
    Tenderness a plenty but
    That wasn't what you craved
    There's holes in hearts
    Desire Starts
    To make demands
    And be a bore
    You'd be a fool
To make your plans with her

    Why would you say sorry
    Oh, why would you
    Why would you say sorry
Oh, why would you say sorry
    Oh, why would you-
    When it's just one
    Of many bullets
    You will bite
    While waiting
    For a ray of light
    Waiting
    For a ray of light
    Waiting
    For a ray of light

    The paper cuts
    From the love letter
    You never gave him
    Could not meet
    Your new found needs
    Of misbehaving
    Why
    Why would you say sorry.

    PROCOL HARUM LYRICS

    "A Whiter Shade Of Pale"

    We skipped the light fandango
    turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
    I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
    The room was humming harder
    as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
    the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
    one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed
She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
    and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
    that my anger straightway died
If music be the food of love
    then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head

    A Horse with No Name
    by America

    Lyrics

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
    La, la

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
    La, la

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
    And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
    La, la

"A Horse with No Name" is a song written by Dewey Bunnell, and originally recorded by the band America. It was the band's first and most successful single, released in late 1971 in Europe and early 1972 in the US, and topping the charts in several countries.[2] It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.[3]

    Development

America's self-titled debut album was released initially in Europe with only moderate success and without the song "A Horse with No Name". "A Horse with No Name" was originally called "Desert Song" and was written while the band was staying at the home studio of Arthur Brown (a different person from the British singer), in Puddletown, Dorset. The first two demos were recorded there, by Jeff Dexter and Dennis Elliott, and were intended to capture the feel of the hot, dry desert that had been depicted at the studio from a Salvador Dalí painting, and the strange horse that had ridden out of an M.C. Escher picture. Writer Dewey Bunnell also says he remembered his childhood travels through the Arizona and New Mexico desert when his family lived at Vandenberg Air Force Base.[4]

Trying to find a song that would be popular in both the United States and Europe, Warner Bros. was reticent about releasing Beckley's "I Need You" ballad as the first single from America. The label asked the band if they had any other material, then arranged for them to record four more songs at Morgan Studios, Willesden in London.[5] "A Horse with No Name" was released as the featured song on a three-track single in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy and the Netherlands in late 1971. On the release "A Horse with No Name" shared the A-side with "Everyone I Meet Is from California"; "Sandman" featured on the B-side. However, its early-1972 two-track US release did not include "Sandman", with "Everyone I Meet Is from California" appearing on the B-side.

"A Horse with No Name" was recorded in the key of E minor with acoustic guitars, bass guitar, drum kit, and bongo drums. The only other chord is a D, fretted on the low E and G strings, second fret. A 12-string guitar plays an added F♯ (second fret, high E string) on the back beat of the Em. A noted feature of the song is the driving bass line with a hammer-hook in each chorus. A "waterfall"-type solo completes the arrangement. Produced by Ian Samwell on the day of final recording at Morgan Studios, at first the group thought it too corny and took some convincing to actually play it. Gerry Beckley has explained in Acoustic Guitar magazine (March 2007) that the correct tuning for the guitar is D E D G B D, low to high. The chord pattern that repeats throughout the entire song is: 202002 (Em), then 020202 and 000202. The tuning is unique to this song; they did not use it on any other America song.
    Reception

Despite the song being banned by some U.S. radio stations because of supposed drug references to heroin use,[6] the song ascended to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and the album quickly reached platinum status. The song charted earlier in the Netherlands (reaching number 11) and the UK (reaching number 3, the band's only Top 40 hit in the country[7]) than it did in the United States. The interpretation of the song as a drug reference comes from the fact that the word "horse" is a common slang term for heroin.

The song's resemblance to some of Neil Young's work aroused some controversy. "I know that virtually everyone, on first hearing, assumed it was Neil", Bunnell says. "I never fully shied away from the fact that I was inspired by him. I think it's in the structure of the song as much as in the tone of his voice. It did hurt a little, because we got some pretty bad backlash. I've always attributed it more to people protecting their own heroes more than attacking me." By coincidence, it was "A Horse with No Name" that replaced Young's "Heart of Gold" at the number 1 spot on the U.S. pop chart.[8]

The song has received criticism for its banal, oddly phrased lyrics, including "The heat was hot"; "There were plants, and birds, and rocks, and things"; and "'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain."[9] Penn Jillette asked the band about their lyrics, "there were plants, and birds, and rocks, and things" after a show in Atlantic City, where America opened for Penn & Teller. According to Jillette, their explanation for the lyrics was that they were intoxicated with cannabis while writing it.[10] In a 2012 interview, Beckley disputed Jillette's story, saying, "I don't think Dew was stoned."[11]

    Soundtrack appearances

The song was featured in Hideous Kinky, a British–French 1998 film, during a trip on the Moroccan desert. In 2008, it was used in a Kohls[12] TV commercial for Vera Wang.

It can also be heard in Season 2 of Millennium, in the episode "Owls". It can be heard on an episode of The Simpsons, "The Haw-Hawed Couple". In another episode, "A Star Is Born Again". Ned Flanders can be heard singing it, with alternative lyrics. It was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the fictional classic rock radio station K-DST.

The song bookends the second episode of the third season of Breaking Bad, "Caballo sin Nombre" (Spanish for "Horse without Name"), where the song plays on a car radio as Walter White drives through the desert in the beginning,[13] before being pulled over for driving with a cracked windshield. At the end of the episode the song is sung by Walter in the shower. The song was also featured in the show Friends in Season 5, Episode 22, "The One With Joey's Big Break".[14]

The song is also featured in the movies The Devil's Daughter, The Trip, and Air America. The song is also featured on the soundtrack of the 2013 motion picture American Hustle directed by David O. Russell and 2016 movie The Nice Guys.

In 2014, the song was featured in an advert for the Toyota Auris Hybrid.
    Musical references

The song was one of many popular songs quoted and parodied on the album The Third Reich 'n Roll by The Residents.

The song "Face" by American rock band Aerosmith released in 2001 bears a strong resemblance towards "A Horse With No Name".

Michael Jackson's song "A Place with No Name" was released posthumously by TMZ as a 25-second snippet on July 16, 2009. The snippet closely resembles "A Horse with No Name". Jim Morey, both Jackson's and America's former band manager, has stated that "America was honored that Michael chose to do their song and they hope it becomes available for all Michael's fans to hear."[15] The song was remastered and released in its entirety along with the original Michael Jackson recording on Jackson's 2014 album, Xscape.

The manner in which American band Drive-by Truckers' song "The Fourth Night of My Drinking" begins, nods to "A Horse with No Name".
    Other references to the song

The song was covered by a band in the bar Robin Williams' character hangs out at in the 1987 movie Good Morning, Vietnam.

Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things was the title of the 1993 debut album by The Loud Family, and was quoted by songwriter Scott Miller in the first track, "He Do the Police in Different Voices" ("Maybe plants and birds and rocks and things can justify my day").

It also appeared sung by members of a hippie group, "The People", in Series 3 of HBO's Six Feet Under, in the episode: "Tears, Bones and Desire" as the women make mops.

In the episode "Bill's Autobiography" on NewsRadio, Dave Foley's character was found singing the song on an audiotape on which he records his thoughts.

In 1999, the literary magazine Lamia Ink published a short play by American playwright Meron Langsner entitled The Name of the Horse, in which the problem of the horse's name is explored. The play is also included in a collection of parodies entitled The Sacred Cow Slaughterhouse published by Indie Theatre Now.

In The Simpsons episode "The Haw-Hawed Couple", Homer and Marge trick Bart and Lisa into thinking they're busy arguing so they can have their time alone. They accidentally throw a piece of clothing at the tape recorder and "A Horse With No Name" plays.

In computer game NetHack, when the player character dismounts an unnamed horse, the game issues the message "You've been through the dungeon on a horse with no name", or, when hallucinating, "It felt good to get out of the rain."[16]

In the October 7, 2015 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Colbert, wearing a big and furry hat, proclaims that the titular horse's name is "Gary the horse".

In the Reno 911 season five episode "Junior Runs for Office", after consuming an entire pan of hashish brownies, Junior panics upon learning that "A Horse With No Name" is not available in the jukebox of the bar that they are in.

    BOB SEGER LYRICS

    "Fire Lake"

Who's gonna ride that chrome three wheeler
Who's gonna make that first mistake
Who wants to wear those gypsy leathers
All the way to Fire Lake
Who wants to break the news about Uncle Joe
    You remember Uncle Joe
He was the one afraid to cut the cake
Who wants to tell poor Aunt Sarah
Joe's run off to Fire Lake
Joe's run off to Fire Lake

Who wants to brave those bronze beauties
    Lying in the sun
With their long soft hair falling
    Flying as they run
    Oh they smile so shy
    And they flirt so well
And they lay you down so fast
Till you look straight up and say
    Oh lord
Am I really here at last

Who wants to play those eights and aces
    Who wants a raise
    Who needs a stake
Who wants to take that long shot gamble
And head out to Fire Lake
    Head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
    And head out
Who wants to go to Fire Lake
    Head out
    Out to Fire Lake
    Who's gonna do it
