Default Cars vs Redwood Across U.S. 101

Geesh! What a mess! As much as it has rained in the region, people should
slow the hell down and be more cautious! Luckily nobody was hurt too badly.

How the hell can you miss a Redwood laying across the highway?

I dunno! I am sure it was still dark at 6:30 a.m. But speed had to be a factor
along with a wet road. It has been cold enough that some frost or black ice
was there, but uncertain of that.

    Shit...never over drive your headlights!

Yeah. I've driven through really nasty blizzards in pitch dark on roads sheeted in ice covered in snow to the point when you got out of your truck, you literally could not stand up without holding on to the truck, and never hit anything. Speed is everything, and I never exceed my visibility ahead with consideration of traction beneath me.

A couple of years ago my son got into a wreck by hitting another driver. I told him he was going too fast, and he said "I was only going 20!" I replied with, "And you lost control of your truck, and hit another driver. I don't care if you were going 20, you were STILL going too fast for conditions. If you're going 10 and still can't keep 100% control of your rig, you're going too fast."

"But there was another guy riding my bumper behind me!"

"Fuck him. Let him go into the ditch or hit someone else, don't let anyone push you faster than you know you're good with."

That finally sunk through and he's been incident free since then.... knock on wood.

I drove home once back in WV when the snowstorm was so heavy that
the headlights reflected right back into the car.

Best thing to do was to use the parking lights for visibility and follow the
silhouette of the trees on both sides of the road. Thank heaven I knew the road well
    and it was fairly straight.

    Yep.

A trick that an old Sourdough up in Fairbanks told me years ago is in whiteout conditions to put a cross of black tape on your headlights, making each one in essence 4 lights. It breaks up the beam and doesn't reflect so much on the incoming snow - it works great.

Nice idea...I'll have to try that if the need arises!
