I would be interested in learning if there were any protests in the name of ecology against this. I suspect that only in the US are such protests given any news coverage (if they even occur elsewhere).
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

There are very severe ecological requirements when designing and laying pipelines on the seabed, and they are strictly observed. So there are no reasons for any protests.
You might have known that Russia is very experienced in this field and have laid many pipelines of such a kind among which there are "The Blue Stream" gas pipeline (Black Sea) to Turkey and "Nord Stream" (Baltic Sea) to Germany.

I am thinking that protests such as we hear about within the US are a uniquely American phenomenon... we have some very "special" people here in the US.

You are speaking about "Green Peace". We have their branches here in Russia. But they are very much politically engaged 'sons of a bitch', trying to earn money the way they've chosen.

So let me get this straight, Balu. You walk into a country, effectively take it over, promise the, ahem, 'electorate' that you'll be good for them .. and it takes you YEARS to make 'good' on even a basic part of it ???

If you're going to go in for your imperialistic empire-building, shouldn't you be making advance plans for the welfare of those you intend to rule ???

... or ... did it NEVER work like that ... certainly, never in the USSR-days .. ?

Power is everything. Eh, Balu ? Isn't that correct ? That is central to Russian thinking, I believe, and has been for a very long time. All else - literally, ALL else - comes at least a poor second ...

Problem I see is idly sitting by, just as we did with Germany in the 30s while Russia builds an infrastructure that's going to have to br dismantled at a much higher price than if we do it now. Same with doing nothing about ISIS. Seems to be a LOT of major world players with a stake in this game.

As far as the subject of ISIS goes, Russia-Putin now fights ISIS, AS IT HAS ALLIED WITH SYRIA against the ISIS controlled forces fighting to overthrow the Syrian forces under Assad's control..
Whereas, obama only pretended to fight them. A fact proven , by the obama's order not to strike ISIS command and control center in Raqqa!
Putin came, in ordered it hit with airstrikes and obama had a damn meltdown about it..-Tyr

All true, of course. Though ... it became apparent, early on, that Russia was willing to attack anyone who didn't happen to be a friend of Assad's in that territory.

I think that Russia sees strategic advantage concerning Syria - one which serves Russia first and foremost. I may trust what they've done. I'm not nearly so sure about their motivations.

Syria is a gateway to both Africa and the Middle East and the Med. A perfect launch point to go in any direction. We've had it bottled up since WWII, but with these shifts in control and the West doing nothing, that control has eroded.

Looks to be true, but in this world merging with USA performing as a much weaker player (thanks to obama's deliberate weakening) what else could he do?
With China, N. Korea, Iran, ISIS, etc.making big moves to increase their power, scope and influence on the world stage..

ONE COULD CALL IT STRENGTHENING HIS OWN NATIONS DEFENSES IN AS MUCH AS THAT IS WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE DONE!
And I know its not that cut and dry, but Putin gets to act without all the restraints built in that we have.
I am by no means defending him wholesale...
Point is he is acting in his nation's "best interests" same as the incoming great President Trump will do..

I do blame Obama. Putin acting in his own interest is understandable. Just like Balu is understandable. Doesn't mean I'm giving free rides. Putin is jockeying for strategic control. While we watch.

Obama was a disaster - no question. I'm looking forward to great things from Trump ..

As for Putin, I don't see that he has any need to strengthen Russia's defences. He might, granted, be thinking along those lines .. because he's falling back on the old Soviet neuroses. But any country possessing Russia's military capabilities needs no additional defences.

Crimea - and their taking over of that territory. I struggle to see how that fits in with any need to strengthen Russia's defences. Then, there's the repeated incursions they make into British airspace ... a lot more these days than just a couple of years ago.

No, Putin is far more explainable as a belligerent than as anything else.

And Russia's 'democratic' potentialities are regressing. I posted on that just days ago. See this, Tyr, and note where Russia ranks ..
