Flag burning is a very extreme display of emotion, and must be reserved for very specific times when that display is appropriate. It is no different from other extreme displays of emotion, such as using profanity. You may drop the F-bomb with your buddies. But you most certainly would never use such language around your mother.

Likewise, while flag-burning may sometimes be appropriate, it is ONLY appropriate when you carefully consider the situation and the audience.

And this is where the age thing comes into play, most 16 and 17 year olds are unable to carefully consider most situations. That's why they are not considered adults yet. That's why their parents are still responsible for them. They make choices based on emotions and not thought out logic. Most teens act on emotions and response.


I have yet to meet a 16 or 17 year old, that thinks like a 35 year old!

You also need to take into consideration that most teens if they have been told not to do something usually do it anyway, because someone told them not to. It's the old you told me not to do it, so I am going to do it anyway routine.

I have burned an American Flag several times actually. That is the proper way to retire one. We would do it once a week at Boy Scout Camp when I worked there and playing Lee Greenwood's Proud To Be An American in the background. The state offices would send us their old American Flags and we would have that ceremony. That is the only time it is appropriate to burn a flag.
