At least 27 dead and more than two dozen injured in Texas church shooting

At least 27 people were killed and around 27 injured in a Texas church shooting Sunday morning, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The alleged shooter is dead, and it appears there is no longer an active threat at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 40 miles southeast of San Antonio, police told ABC News.

    We all started running

A person who said she works at a gas station across the street from the church told ABC News she heard rapid gunfire at around 11:15 a.m., leading congregants from the church as well as customers at the station to run inside for cover.

“We heard several shots and we all started running inside the store,” she said.

“It lasted about 15 seconds. I yelled, ‘Get down! Get inside!’ and we all went into hiding,” said the woman, who said she is 49 but declined to give her name.

She said the gas station locked its doors. "We have not reopened,” she said.

She then that within minutes of the gunfire, emergency personnel had arrived at the scene.

“There were officers that were checking the wounded in here were asking them questions,” she said.

The FBI and ATF were at the scene by Sunday afternoon, and at least six people from the church were taken to Connally Memorial Center in nearby Floresville for treatment.

14-year-old girl was among the victims, father says

One victim of the shooting is a 14-year-old girl, according to her father, Frank Pomeroy, who is pastor at the church.

Pomeroy spoke by phone to ABC News' Mike DelMoro.

Annabelle “was one very beautiful special child,” her father said.

Pomeroy said he was in Oklahoma on Sunday morning, a rare weekend that he wasn't at the church. He was driving back when he spoke to ABC News.

All of those who died are close friends of his, Pomeroyhe said.

A small group of people were seen clustered together outside the church, an unassuming building with a red door. They were holding hands as tears overtook an attempt to pray, a KSAT reporter said.

Trump tweeted on the shooting from Japan where he is visiting on his Asia tour.

May God be w/ the people of Sutherland Springs, Texas. The FBI & law enforcement are on the scene. I am monitoring the situation from Japan.
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 5, 2017

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement, "The thoughts and prayers of all Texans are with the people of Sutherland Springs as tragic reports come out of First Baptist Church."

"Please join Angela and me as we pray for those impacted by this horrific shooting,” Paxton said.

ABC News' Joi-Marie McKenzie contributed to this report.

I hope there's a special place in Hell for the shooter. I'd say odds are good it was a local crime. One doesn't just pick "Sutherland Springs" as a place to do anything. It's a two-by-twice, country town. The coward probably knew the one place good old boys don't carry their guns is the House of the Lord. Scumbag.

Now I gotta go see if my daughter or I know any of these people ...

Okay, this won't make sense until someone fills in the blanks. The shooter is identified as David Patrick Kelley of New Braunfels. His Mother-in-law has a PO Box in Sutherland Springs. No other link to the place has been cited yet.

He was a zoomie who taught Sunday School after his hitch in the USAF was up. He's white. The entire town of Sutherland Springs is 96% white, some Asians, and "0" is listed for blacks and hispanics. Total population is around 700.

I see why it's so small. A house will cost you $300K and up. The housing market in SA is half that.

Young 20's, was wearing full black tactical gear, ballistic vest, not known if died from self inflicted wound or shot by someone else.

    A nut case.

What would gun control do to stop something like this? The fact is, gun control CREATES scenarios like this. "I know the church-going, law-abiding citizens aren't going heeled to church".

Many of the larger churches in Texas have armed security. A little wooden church house on the creek in the country isn't going to.

He was court martialed and dishonorably discharged from the USAF, so he was illegally in possession of firearms. No new gun control law would have prevented this.

Law enforcement officials identified the gunman on Sunday evening as Devin Patrick Kelley, age 26, of neighboring Comal County. Officials were preparing to search his home.

There was no immediate information on the reason behind the shooting, according to Sheriff Tackett. Federal officials said while the gunman's motivation was unclear, there were no obvious signs of a connection to terrorism.

The shooter, dressed in all black and wearing tactical gear and a ballistic vest, first began firing outside the church before he continued his shooting spree inside, said Freeman Martin, a regional director with the Texas Department of Public Safety. He was armed with a "Ruger AR assault-type rifle," he said.

A local citizen confronted the gunman, "grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect," he said.

"We know the ages range from 5 years old to 72 years of age," Martin said.

The gunman dropped the rifle and then fled the scene with the local citizen in pursuit, he said.

The suspect was later found dead in his vehicle by law enforcement, Martin said.

"We don't know if this was a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot by our local resident who engaged him with gunfire," he added.
