Record-breaking cold sweeps US in first days of 2018

Warming shelters have opened across the South even as longstanding New Year's Day events were canceled in northerns states as Americans hunkered down against the bitter cold.

January 2, 2018 MILWAUKEE, Wis.—Bone-chilling cold gripped much of the United States as 2018 began, breaking century-old records and leading to several deaths that authorities attributed to exposure to the dangerously low temperatures.

The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories and freeze warnings Tuesday covering a vast area from South Texas to Canada and from Montana through New England. Authorities opened warming shelters in the South as temperatures dipped notably close to zero in Alabama and Georgia.

The bitter cold wave enveloped much of the Midwest on Monday, yet that didn't deter hundreds of people from ringing in the new year by jumping into Lake Michigan. Throngs of people took part in the Polar Plunge in Milwaukee, despite sub-freezing temperatures and a warning of potential hypothermia from the local fire chief. Organizers canceled a similar event on the Chicago lakefront, after the temperature there dipped below zero and thick white steam rose from the lake. Organizers said the arctic blast made jumping into the lake too dangerous. An annual New Year's Day water ski show on Pigeon Lake in western Michigan was canceled for the first time since the event was launched in 1980 because the water was frozen solid.

Temperatures plunged below zero elsewhere in the Midwest, including in Aberdeen, S. D., where the mercury dropped to a record-breaking minus 32 degrees F. The city's previous New Year's Day record had stood for 99 years.

In Nebraska, temperatures hit 15 below zero before midnight Sunday in Omaha, breaking a record low dating to 1884. Omaha officials cited the forecast in postponing the 18th annual New Year's Eve Fireworks Spectacular that draws around 30,000 people.

It was colder in Des Moines, Iowa, where city officials closed a downtown outdoor ice skating plaza and said it wouldn't reopen until the city emerged from sub-zero temperatures. The temperature hit 20 below zero early Monday, with the wind chill dipping to negative 31 degrees.

The weather service said temperatures in Indianapolis early Tuesday tied a record low of minus 12 degrees F. for Jan. 2 set in 1887.

Indianapolis Public Schools canceled classes for Tuesday on all its campuses due to the predicted sub-zero temperatures. Students had been scheduled to return from winter break.

In northeastern Montana, the wind chill readings dipped as low as minus 58 degrees. And in Duluth, Minn., a city known for its bitter cold winters, the wind chill dipped to 36 below zero.

Plunging overnight temperatures in Texas brought rare snow flurries as far south as Austin, and accidents racked up on icy roads across the state. In the central Texas city of Abilene, the local police chief said more than three dozen vehicle crashes were reported in 24 hours.

It's even cold in the Deep South, as temperatures plummeted early Tuesday to 14 degrees F. in Atlanta and 26 degrees F. as far south as New Orleans. Temperatures fell to 8 degrees near Cullman, Ala., and 20 degrees in Mobile, Ala. Georgia saw one of its coldest temperatures of the winter: 2 degrees shortly before dawn at a US Forest Service weather station at Toccoa, Ga. Warming shelters were opened across the South as freeze watches and warnings blanketed the region, including hard freeze warnings for much of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

The cold is blamed in at least nine deaths in the past week. Most recently, police in St. Louis said a homeless man found dead inside a trash bin Monday evening apparently froze to death as the temperature dropped to negative 6 degrees F. Sheriff's officials in Fond du Lac County, Wis., said a woman whose body was found Monday evening on the shore of Lake Winnebago likely died of exposure.
18 U.S. Code § 2381-Treason Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

A cold snap, or 3, or 100 doesn't mean we aren't actually in a warming cycle. And even if we ARE in a warming cycle, that doesn't mean we caused it or could prevent it.

Short version OP doesn't prove anything.

Ya have to understand how a leftist thinks, pard... I know I know... that's pretty much impossible right there but, to them, WARMING is caused by global warming, and RECORD COLD TEMPS is caused by... wait for it... GLOBAL WARMING TOO.

    Ya... go figure...

Some warmth here and there, 3 times or 100, in addition to many scientists being busted faking numbers in their data, leads me to believe that the global warming BS is just that, BS.

Maybe the cold will make it so that the polar bears won't have to eat motor oil at least?

Frozen Lake Erie Forces Cancellation of Annual Polar Bear Plunge in Cleveland

Sub-zero temperatures and a frozen Lake Erie forced the cancelation of Cleveland's annual Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day. The event at Edgewater Park was scrapped because crews were unable to cut a hole in the frozen lake.

"Sadly Lake Erie was basically frozen to Canada, so we couldn’t actually do the polar plunge," the Cleveland Crusaders Rugby Club wrote on Facebook. The event was scheduled for noon on Monday and several brave souls showed up to attempt the frigid plunge. Even though they were not able to jump in the lake, they still accomplished one of their primary goals: "But we still collected a few hundred pounds of canned foods for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Cheers to the Iron Maiden’s and Cleveland Rovers who showed!"

"A frigid blast from the Polar Vortex has caused temperatures to plunge over the Great Lakes," meteorologist Scott Sutherland explained at The Weather Network.

According to Cleveland Scene, "Last year, according to GLERL data, the lake hit about 20-percent ice coverage. The 'polar vortex' winter of 2013-2014 saw 92-percent ice coverage. This winter may eclipse that mark, if trends bear out."

Need I say more?” - Chris Rock
