Default Russian jet flies within 5 feet of US Navy plane, Pentagon says

I've never been in the military before. Even as a civilian, the closest I've ever come to a cockpit was the first row in coach class! With that said - even I think 5 feet is a little close for comfort - no?

    ---

Russian jet flies within 5 feet of US Navy plane, Pentagon says

Washington (CNN)A Russian Su-27 jet performed an unsafe intercept of a US Navy surveillance plane while it was flying in international airspace over the Black Sea Monday, three defense officials told CNN.

The American pilots reported that the Russian jet came within 5 feet of the US plane, according to two of the officials.

The Russian jet's action forced the US Navy aircraft to end its mission prematurely, one of the officials said.

US Naval Forces Europe, which oversees US operations in the region, later confirmed the incident in a statement.

"This interaction was determined to be unsafe due to the SU-27 closing to within five feet and crossing directly through the EP-3's flight path, causing the EP-3 to fly through the SU-27's jet wash," Capt. Pamela Kunze, a spokesperson for US Naval Forces Europe told CNN.

EXTREMELY unsafe. Inexperienced pilots have crashed for less. 5'? Excuse my usual cynicism but if that's not an exaggeration, both planes are lucky they survived. Five feet is nothing at airspeed.

5ft is impressive, I'd imagine at high speed it would take a little bump in turbulence for an accident to happen

It's not impressive... it's highly deadly and stupid... and a provocation.

You must truly have never been in the military.

Kinda why I questioned the 5 ft. If that's actual data, only luck avoided a collision. If that's a guess-timate, it probably wasn't that close.

They need to quit sending flights over the Black Sea without an escort. They never used to when I lived in Karamursel. They always had a couple of fighters lurking around.

Why even entertain Pete with explanation that he isn't going to give a rats ass about anyway?

Pete doesn't bother me. Sometimes he's just making conversation. Could have been a legit inquiry. He knows he's not a vet and we are and probably know. He IS actually a person, y'know

If he doesn't care, then oh well.

From what I've seen from Pete here, he's interested in very little real debate. He drops in to spew some leftist hyperbole and then splits.

That to me isn't the kind of person that's interested in real debate about anything. I don't waste my time with people like that.

But that's just me... my patience with people gets less and less the older the I get. I can tell when someone is just a hack. But if and when they want to engage in legitimate debate, I'm always game.

Flying a fighter jet, purportedly, 5" away from another plane, is NOT impressive when the other plane is doing so to either intimidate or instigate, as in a Russian jet and an American air craft. IMPRESSIVE is the LAST word I would use to describe that. TARGET is what I'd describe it. Lock on to the fucker and let them know that if they try that shit again, they're going down. Leave the 5 feet away shit to the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels.

I think it was an accident. Just a guess because we don't have all the info. You can't fly planes that close to one another without one sucking into the other, as you know. First thing I thought of was the Thunderbirds. Got few autographs.

However, they fly wingtip to wingtip or over and under and aren't in each other's wash when they're that close. If this Russian fighter crossed the brow of a prop plane he was probably going so fast they couldn't collide. Probably scared the crap out of himself. I imagine it woke up the pilot and crew of the AWACS too.

If the Russian did that on purpose his own people should ground his ass for being a fool with their expensive toy.

When I was at Nellis AFB the Thunderbirds were still flying the T-38's. One day we heard that 3 jets had followed the leader into the dirt and crashed...

    http://www.nytimes.com/1982/01/19/us...in-desert.html

After that they dame to each our 3 AMU's and took 2 F-16's. So since the Thunderbirds didn't have anyone trained on how fix F-16's, we had to support them. I've worked on every one of them. They also came to us and asked if any of us wanted to join them, but you had to at least by a SSgt but they waved that since the F-16's were so new. I was a Sgt and was BEGGED to join because I was actually one of the most knowledgeable F-16 Fight Controls, Instrumentation troops at Nellis. I could tell the General Dynamics reps that had an office right on the flight line things about their jet that they didn't even know. I turned it down though, but my buddy the photographer was the Thunderbird photog until he retired after 24 years. I kinda regret turning them down now. It always sucks to look back.
