    there's a cure for that

“… the greatest detractor from high performance is fear: fear that you are not prepared, fear that you are in over your head, fear that you are not worthy, and ultimately, fear of failure. If you can eliminate that fear—not through arrogance or just wishing difficulties away, but through hard work and preparation—you will put yourself in an incredibly powerful position to take on the challenges you face" - Pete Carroll.

I'm not ex-military, either. But even I can see, with total clarity, just how mind-bogglingly stupid it is to have a jet fly approximately five feet from another, in mid-air.

It beggars belief that the pilots involved, both of them, wouldn't understand the danger involved.

I think the real point is that sheer arrogance is involved, overruling commonsense. The Russian side has been making highly provocative flights either near or within British airspace for a considerable time. The trend of frequency of them has been increasing. It's my understanding that all of this, every bit of it, comes from an arrogant 'need' the Russians have to assert themselves militarily against rival powers.

    It's pure, hostile, provocation.
That's what it is. That's what it is meant to be. It's the action of a power that doesn't care to conduct itself in a peaceful manner, any more than it MUST, to maintain a minimal status quo.

Russia is arrogant. They'll keep pushing and pushing purely because of that arrogance. Theirs is a power which is only concerned with whatever it is that will satisfy their own interests.

Unfortunately, therefore, powers such as the US and UK are forced to be sufficiently confrontational as to deter their arrogance. It's far from ideal - but it IS highly necessary. We on our side want peaceful co-existence. They on their side only want that until or unless they see an alternative, which they will see as possibly 'better'.

Fortunately for us, there IS no alternative, and thus far, the Russian leadership has been sane enough to understand it.

The real problem may be, in the future, whether the Russian side loses its grip on that sanity. If they do, the world has one enormous problem on its hands. We need to be forever vigilant - we have no choice.

Other than to prove you take great pride in Russian arrogance and recklessness ... what was the point of your post, Balu ?

Does it convince us that all you seek is peaceful coexistence ? OR, does it push the impression - evidently a valid one - that what you really want is to show us that you are a rival power, seeking to push, and push, and keep on pushing, that rivalry down our throats ?

I fail to see anything constructive in your current posting. Fact is, Balu, that you know you cannot logically defend your side's military provocations. But you don't care to (.. otherwise, why not make the attempt ?).

A power highly determined to 'prove' its superiority - but, disinterested in considering other things, such as the desire to be peaceful, non-threatening, an actual ally in any matters which don't directly serve the self-centered plans and ambitions of that aggressive power - is not, I suggest, one which can automatically be trusted. Thus, you maintain the rivalry.

You do so, ultimately, needlessly -- you COULD work towards a better and more permanent form of coexistence. But, DO you ?

    NOPE.

Tell us, Balu. Why are you really here, on this forum ? Do you have clear, coherent, purpose in being here ? What is that purpose ?

MOSCOW, January 29. /TASS/. Russia’s Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a US ЕР-3Е Aries II warfare and reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Black Sea towards the Russian border. All safety precautions were observed during the interception, the Russian defense ministry’s press service said on Monday, commenting of Western media allegations about unsafe interception of an Orion reconnaissance aircraft.
According to the Russian defense ministry, at about noon on Monday Russian airspace control alert means spotted an unidentified air target over the Black Sea neutral waters approaching Russia’s airspace borders.
"A Su-27 fighter jet from air defense alert force was used to intercept the target. The Su-27 approached the aircraft to a safe distance and identified it as a US ЕР-3Е Aries II electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft," the ministry said.
According to the Russian ministry, the Russian fighter jet followed the US aircraft to prevent it from violating Russia’s airspace borders observing all necessary safety precautions.
After the US reconnaissance aircraft changed its course off Russia’s airspace border, the Russian Su-27 fighter jet returned to the base. "The Su-27 flight was performed in strict compliance with international rule of airspace use, not incidents were reported," the ministry added.
CNN reported earlier that a Russian fighter jet had intercepted an Orion reconnaissance plane over the Black Sea. CNN said citing US officials that the interception had been unsafe.

    ... 'sorry' .... what ?

    What's your point ?

Are you saying that you can violate others' airspace, indulge in recklessness against other powers' forces, BUT, you cannot accept any rival power acting in a manner seemingly reminiscent of your own ?

Russia has a long history of 'testing' the airspaces of other countries. It has, again and again, showed us its ongoing desire to push military rivalry. Other powers, though, are expected to just sit back and take it ? We, in contrast to you, dare not even ONCE reciprocate ??

Certainly, one of the clips you posted showed clear provocation from YOUR side. It was nothing other than provocation. But you seem not to care that it was.

    Explain that, if you can.

Oh, and by the way ... the article you posted a link to shows us just a still photograph ... no video footage, that I've seen. What follows is an 'account' of 'what happened' from a news agency long known by us in the West to exist to push Russian propaganda. There's no actual proof of what was alleged. In fact, even the Tass article didn't go so far as to state that an airspace violation HAD occurred. It merely assumes that one MIGHT have happened, had no interception taken place.

    Their own words ...

The Russian fighter jet followed the US aircraft to prevent it from violating Russia’s airspace borders
No actual violation ... just an assumption that one would have eventually occurred.

Sorry, that's not the way message boards work.

If you don't want people to respond to things you say, then maybe you shouldn't say anything at all.

Default Five Feet is too dangerous for the Navy's Blue Angels too! But they fly closer

The Blue Angels only get close for Demonstration purposes.

Any other aircraft getting that close to another aircraft, from any country. IS DANGEROUS.

Give the Commie an inch and try to be nice to him and he comes back talking smack his military can't back up. A fighter buzzes a surveillance plane. Must been all kinds of testing Ivan's skills on the stick going after a plane that flies half the airspeed his does and is unarmed.

Ever heard of Insurlik AFB, commie? It's near the Black Sea too. Got a bunch of jet jocks that live and breath for a shot at you. SO go ahead and splash a surveillance plane. Damned shit-talking-ass commie pinko desk jockey

Russians - hanging out doing nothing...

Bush/Obama/etc start pulling main battle tanks out of Europe.

Russians - okay, we'll steal Chrimea now. *Tanks* for that NATO.

Saddam tries it with Kuwait circa 1990? Whole word goes to war.
