Toy Caldwell was a Marine rifleman in Vietnam and was WIA, receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star w/V device. He also used NO guitar pick, NO wah wah pedal, NO whammy bar...only his Thumb. He is my personal choice for the Greatest Guitar Player ever.
Ooh Rah and Calm Seas and Flowing Winds, brother.

I used to listen to this song many times in a row back in this time frame, '73 and '74 because like a dumbass I broke up with my girlfriend. We finally made up, and will be married 44 years on September 11. I owe it to Toy Caldwell.

I live in the western Carolina mountains and this song still echoes through the field and forests when I roll along between the ditches down the curvy two lane roads these same boys traveled. There ain't much unspoiled landscape left. The interstates, the cellphone towers, and the digital billboards are taking over. At least we have meaningful music like this where the lyrics matter and the sound is pure. Can't you see what I'm talkin' about?
