Coast Guard Cutter Alert returns to Astoria after engineering malfunctions

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Alert returned to their homeport Friday in Astoria, Oregon, following a 39-day deployment in the Eastern Pacific, which concluded early due to a series of engineering malfunctions aboard the 49-year-old ship.
The crew departed Astoria Feb. 5 to conduct a counternarcotics patrol in the Eastern Pacific when the ship suffered more than 35 equipment casualties within the first 19 days of their patrol, including malfunctions in the ship’s radar, propulsion and fuel systems.
The ship’s main diesel engine also suffered a crankcase explosion, resulting from a seized bearing on an oil pump, which caused a week-long delay in Panama while the crew inspected the engine. Following the inspection, a decision was made to end the patrol.

On a side note, you might have seen this Cutter in the movies. She was in "The Island", the James Bond movie "License to Kill" and she portrayed the Cutter Tamaroa in the movie "Perfect Storm"

Funny, Tamaroa was a old Navy seagoing tug, 205 feet long - not a 210!
I have lost my mind. If found, please give it a snack and return it?

And who (besides you & I) would know that (lol)

Before I retired, I worked at Group So. Portland's boat repair facility. Had an MK2 report for duty from the Tammy. Man was he good, so good that the Group started talk regarding downgrading my position (after I retired) to an PO2 slot.

I had to remind them that the next man wouldn't be the same as the current PO2. He had to learn to make do or make what he needed for the Tammy (after all, parts just aren't readily available for a 50+ year old ship).

Now I hear they have a meritorious advancement program. That man deserved it if anyone did.

That program has been long in coming, in my opinion. It had previously been reserved for an Enlisted Person
    of the Year thing.
