U.S. Files World Trade Organization Cases Against 5 Countries Over Retaliatory Tariffs

    OAN Newsroom
    UPDATED 7:08 AM PT — Mon. July 16, 2018
The U.S. is filing five cases with the World Trade Organization against its major trading partners.

Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the cases are being filed against Canada, China, the EU, Mexico and Turkey.

This WTO action comes in response to the retaliatory tariffs imposed by these nations against the U.S.

Lighthizer stressed the original U.S. tariffs on industrial metals are “fully legitimate” and are in line with international trade rules.

WTO officials said the U.S. crackdown on Beijing’s excess capacity and dumping could hurt China’s economic growth.

“The stakes are high, so are the challenges faced by China in reconciling its responsibility as a global economic leader with domestic policy constraints,” Didier Chambovey, Swiss Permanent Mission to WTO. “The way China addresses these challenges may affect a wide range of WTO members.”

Meanwhile, Lighthizer also stressed the retaliatory tariffs enacted by other countries are designed to hurt American companies, workers, and farmers as well as contradict the WTO rules.
