CNN: Saudis Will Admit Journalist Was Killed During 'Interrogation Gone Wrong'

Breaking: CNN reported Monday afternoon that Saudi Arabia is preparing to acknowledge that Jamal Khashoggi was killed during an "interrogation that went wrong" that was designed to return him to Saudi Arabia. The network, citing two unidentified sources, said that the kingdom will hold the alleged killers responsible for an operation that went awry.

The kingdom is preparing a report that will say it intended to abduct and bring Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, but that he was inadvertently killed in the process. The report is intended to absolve the Saudi government of responsibility for the murder by claiming the operation was not cleared, CNN reported.

Arwa Damon, a Turkey-based correspondent for CNN, reported from Istanbul that the report will most likely conclude “the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency, and that those involved will be held responsible.” She said the Saudis’ report is still being prepared, and could change.

Turkish crime scene investigators dressed in coveralls and gloves entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Monday, nearly two weeks after the disappearance and alleged slaying of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi there.

Police officers carrying files and equipment walked through the heavy metal doors of the consulate after sunset, carrying out an extraordinary search of a diplomatic post that is otherwise considered foreign soil under international law as worldwide concern grows for the missing Washington Post columnist.

The search represents new cooperation between Turkey, which says it fears Khashoggi was killed and dismembered there, and Saudi Arabia, which maintains the allegations it faces are "baseless" despite being unable to explain what happened to Khashoggi.

However, questions remained over how much evidence the investigators could turn up at a consulate where a cleaning crew entered hours before their arrival.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump suggested without offering evidence that "rogue killers" may have slain Khashoggi, stepping further back from his pledge that Saudi Arabia would face "severe punishment" if it is found to be responsible for the columnist's yet-to-be-determined fate.

The Turkish team included a prosecutor, a deputy prosecutor, anti-terror police and forensic experts, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Certain areas of the consulate were to remain off-limits, although officials would be able to inspect surveillance cameras within the post, Turkish media reported.

Turkish officials have wanted to search the consulate for days. Permission for that apparently came after a late Sunday night call between Saudi King Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In statements after the call, both praised the creation of a joint Saudi-Turkish probe about Khashoggi.

The Saudi acceptance came after the kingdom on Sunday threatened retaliation for any sanctions it could face over Khashoggi. The statement did not elaborate, but a Saudi-owned satellite channel later suggested the world's largest oil exporter could wield that production as a weapon against America.

U.S. lawmakers also have threatened tough punitive action against the Saudis if found responsible for Khashoggi's disappearance. Germany, France and Britain also jointly called for a "credible investigation."

What evidence Turkish officials could gather at the consulate remained unknown. Saudi officials have been in and out of the building since Khashoggi's disappearance Oct. 2 without being stopped. Under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic posts are technically foreign soil that must be protected and respected by host countries.

Trump: 'Severe Punishment' if Saudi Journalist Was Murdered

Donald Trump said in an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes" that the U.S. would get to the bottom of what happened to Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi and that if it is discovered he was murdered, there will be "severe punishment."

"As of this moment, they deny it and they deny it vehemently. Could it be them? Yes," he said, in what are his strongest comments yet on the matter.

Incredibly, a Turkish newspaper is reporting that there may be actual audio evidence of Khashoggi's murder. According to the Turkish source Sabah, the journalist turned on the recording function on his Apple before entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The moments of his "interrogation, torture and killing were audio recorded and sent to both his phone and to iCloud," the pro-government, privately owned newspaper paper reported. The Turkish newspaper said conversations of the men involved in the reported assassination were recorded.
Security forces leading the investigation found the audio file inside the phone Khashoggi left with his fiancé, according to Sabah.

Upon noticing the watch, Sabah reports, Khashoggi's assailants tried to unlock the Apple Watch with multiple password attempts, ultimately using Khashoggi's fingerprint to unlock the smart watch. They were successful in deleting only some of the files, Sabah reported.

I'm no expert, but fingerprint ID on an Apple watch?

However, on its website, Apple does not list fingerprint verification as one of the Apple Watch's capabilities. A representative from the company confirmed to CNN the watches do not have the feature.

It was not immediately clear whether it would have been technically feasible for Khashoggi's Apple Watch to transfer audio to his phone, which he had given to his fiancée before entering the consulate.

CNN cannot independently verify the Sabah report and is seeking comment from both Saudi and Turkish officials.

CNN intelligence and security analyst Robert Baer cast doubt on the claim, saying it was too far for a Bluetooth connection and that Khashoggi was unlikely to have anticipated transmitting a recording in advance. "I think what's happened, clearly, is the Turks have the Saudi consulate wired, they have transmitters," he told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

Trump Says Saudi Crown Prince Denies Knowledge of What Happened to Missing Journalist



President Donald Trump said Tuesday the crown prince of Saudi Arabia doubled down on the Kingdom's claim that the government has no knowledge of what happened to a missing Saudi journalist who is thought to have been killed and dismembered in a Saudi consulate.

Two weeks after Jamal Khashoggi went missing following what was supposed to be a routine stop at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, Trump said in a series of tweets the Saudis continue to deny playing a role in what may have happened to the dissident writer:

"Just spoke with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what took place in their Turkish Consulate. He was with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo …

"… during the call, and told me that he has already started, and will rapidly expand, a full and complete investigation into this matter. Answers will be forthcoming shortly."

Pompeo traveled to Saudi Arabia Monday to meet with members of Saudi leadership, including Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

It's been reported multiple times, including Tuesday, that Khashoggi died in a gruesome killing somewhere in the consulate.

Khashoggi is a Saudi dissident journalist who has been critical of the Kingdom. He was a U.S. resident but remained a Saudi citizen at the time of his disappearance.

Khashoggi was visiting the consulate to obtain papers so that he could divorce his wife and get married to his fiancée.

It took seven minutes for Jamal Khashoggi to die, a Turkish source who has listened in full to an audio recording of the Saudi journalist's last moments told Middle East Eye.

Khashoggi was dragged from the consul-general’s office at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and onto the table of his study next door, the Turkish source said.

Horrendous screams were then heard by a witness downstairs, the source said.

Turkish Media Floats Claim Saudis ‘Evaporated’ Khashoggi’s Body with Acid

The much-discussed and often-delayed joint inspection of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by Turkish and Saudi officials formally began on Monday.

Turkish media claimed one of the leads Turkish police investigated claimed Saudi forces inside the consulate killed missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi and “evaporated” his remains with acid.

Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily News details the claim:

Turkish police investigating the case had said in a statement on Oct. 6 that 15 Saudis, including several officials, had arrived in Istanbul on two planes and entered the consulate while Khashoggi was inside. The group included a leading forensic expert, as well as Saudi intelligence officers and Royal Guards, according to reports.

Turan Kışlakçı, head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association and a friend of Khashoggi, had claimed after the disappearance that the Saudis inside the consulate had already gotten rid of the journalist’s body after killing him.

Habertürk website’s columnist Sevilay Yılman wrote on Oct. 15 that Turkish security forces started to look into Kışlakçı’s claim.

“Police and the MİT [Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency] are now probing this claim seriously. They are looking into whether the body of Khashoggi was dissolved using acid,” she said.

A media frenzy erupted on Monday over the arrival of three cleaning personnel arriving at the Saudi consulate just hours ahead of the Turkish inspection team. The reports did not indicate whether any other cleaning teams have worked at the consulate over the last two weeks, or whether this was a regularly scheduled visit.

If the most lurid accusations from Turkish officials are true, it would seem very odd that a 15-man Saudi hit squad did not clean up after itself very thoroughly after performing an execution that could severely damage the future of the Kingdom. One does not wait for the maid service to arrive two weeks later to sanitize a murder scene.

The Chicago Tribune took the appearance of the cleaning crew, which marched right past a horde of journalists carrying “mops, trash bags, and cartons of milk,” as symbolic of the low odds investigators will find any meaningful evidence within the consulate.
