That was one hell of a quake! Initial said 7.2, I suspect it'll finally be closer to 8.

I was standing in the dining room, Sharon & Tanner were in the living room when it struck. The whole house started jumping up and down, then violently whipping back and forth, making the most god-awful racket. Glass shattering from cups, plates, pictures, plants flying around.

We rode it out until I no longer trusted the house, so I yelled for everyone to get out to the front yard. Sharon & Tanner went down the steps from the living room, I grabbed th Jeep keys & took the back steps on the upper deck. I met them around front, and Sharon had injured her knee when navigating those stairs while they were heaving, so Tanner & I got her into the Jeep and took off to the hospital. They suspect a torn ACL, but the ER is hammered right now, so they put a leg brace on her and sent us on our way - come back to see us when we have time for non-life threatening injuries.

The highway to Anchorage is shut down, there's many bridges out of commission and roads torn apart all around us here.

The power just came back on, though, so that's promising.

Got Sharon all set up on our bed with her leg propped up and her laptop driving the big screen downstairs, so she's as comfy as I can make her. Tanner & I are picking up the house... it's a mess. The dogs are still pretty freaked out.

Wow. Great to hear that you're ok though. Sharon is a tough cookie. I sure hope she gets to feeling better quickly though!

    That's just crazy.

Jim, you should recognize that very first picture... you've been on that one dozens of times. That's Vine Road, about 2 miles from the house here - the shortcut we take from my house to go to Talkeetna.

Now that my house is safe, I need to get over and inspect Chilton's place... he's out of town in Valdez.

    OH... MY... GAWD...

Earth quakes was one of the big reasons I left Reno. We had swarms of small ones by the hundreds, and then a 5.7 and a 5.4 hit back to back. Scared the livin' bejezus out of me, that was enough. Started packing and left two weeks later.

No way in H-E-LL could I live up there Alaska with those big ones you guys have up there. The ground just ain't supposed to move. I'd rather deal with the tornadoes here.

I hope everybody is alright up there though... I'll have to look around the internet for stories and updates.

    That sounds terrifying to me!

I have only felt tremors from San Andreas fault. They’ve woken me up, I can’t imagine something like that! Glad you all made it through, though ACL can be horrible. Prayers.

I got a whole string of messages from Palmer Alaska, the tsunami Warning Center.

There were no tsunami waves generated. I think it was too deep. But those roads and
    bridges are a mess!

That goodness You and Sharon are O.K....rattled, a bit bumped up, but O.K.

    OBSERVATIONS OF TSUNAMI ACTIVITY
    --------------------------------
    * No tsunami observations are available to report.

    RECOMMENDED ACTIONS
    -------------------
Actions to protect human life and property will
    vary within tsunami warning areas.

    If you are in a tsunami warning area;

    * Evacuate inland or to higher ground above and beyond
designated tsunami hazard zones or move to an upper floor
of a multi-story building depending on your situation.

    * Move out of the water, off the beach, and away from
harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays and inlets.

    * Be alert to and follow instructions from your local
emergency officials because they may have more detailed or
    specific information for your location.

    * If you feel a strong earthquake or extended ground rolling
take immediate protective actions such as moving inland
    and/or uphill preferably by foot.

    * Boat operators,
    * Where time and conditions permit, move your boat out to
sea to a depth of at least 180 feet.

    * If at sea avoid entering shallow water, harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets to avoid floating and
    submerged debris and strong currents.

    * Do not go to the shore to observe the tsunami.

    * Do not return to the coast until local emergency officials
indicate it is safe to do so.

    IMPACTS
    -------
Impacts will vary at different locations in the warning
    areas.

    If you are in a tsunami warning area;

    * A tsunami with damaging waves and powerful currents is
    possible.

    * Repeated coastal flooding is possible as waves arrive
onshore, move inland, and drain back into the ocean.

    * Strong and unusual waves, currents and inland flooding
can drown or injure people and weaken or destroy structures
    on land and in water.

    * Water filled with floating or submerged debris that can
injure or kill people and weaken or destroy buildings and
    bridges is possible.

    * Strong and unusual currents and waves in harbors,
marinas, bays, and inlets may be especially
    destructive.

    * Some impacts may continue for many hours to days after
    arrival of the first wave.

    * The first wave may not be the largest so later waves may
    be larger.

    * Each wave may last 5 to 45 minutes as a wave encroaches
    and recedes.

    * Coasts facing all directions are threatened because the
waves can wrap around islands and headlands and into bays.

    * Strong shaking or rolling of the ground indicates an
earthquake has occurred and a tsunami may be imminent.

    * A rapidly receding or receded shoreline, unusual waves and
sounds, and strong currents are signs of a tsunami.

    * The tsunami may appear as water moving rapidly out to sea,
a gentle rising tide like flood with no breaking wave,
as a series of breaking waves, or a frothy wall of water.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND NEXT UPDATE
    --------------------------------------
    * Refer to the internet site tsunami.gov for more information.

    * Pacific coastal residents outside California, Oregon,
Washington, British Columbia and Alaska should refer to the
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages at tsunami.gov.

    * This message will be updated within 30 minutes.

Here are the readouts that the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center got.
Please note some of the detections were from several sensors:

Holy smoke, Rick, what an incredible event and ordeal to get through. I'm sorry to hear about Sharon's injury, and I hope you and Tanner are okay, as well as your house. You and your family will all be in our prayers.

    Jim's fine.

When the quake hit, he was in his kitchen and he has that big monster aquarium in it. He ran over there and held it to the wall all through that rodeo, and saved it... it sloshed 1/3 of the water out of the top, but he saved it! lol

There were no tsunami waves generated. I think it was too deep. But those roads and

That goodness You and Sharon are O.K....rattled, a bit bumped up, but O.K.
    Thanks!

Yeah, Palmer is 10 miles from here. All our cell phones blew up right after the first one hit, with Tsunami warnings - turns out those are automatically triggered, I didn't know that. But about an hour later they cancelled it for this area of AK. As far as I know, there were no tsunamis from this event.

Thanks, Russ. The house is fine and we're waiting on Sharon hand & foot.
