Default Honored as Poem Of The Day

When Night Brings Its Stillness, Silence And Tick, Tick, Tick

    Collaboration with Robert Lindley
    8th March 2019

Town was quiet, its heart barely beating
midnight hour came and went so fast
moon and stars blinked through open window
silence echoed in the town's invisible pulse
Strange how life gives night its powers
its more peaceful and murmuring tones
we that too oft wake to its untimely sounds
feel crushing aches in our despairing souls
Clock watching becomes our pride-less new sport
with tick, tick, tick, its rallying calls
and when that strain promises to explode
we pray dawn's falling rays wakes world's all.

We thought not to wake too soon
yet feared we may not wake at all
and tick, tick, tick, rhythm hypnotised us,
we watched no clock, but listened a while,
    until it lulled our weary eyes to sleep;
we woke uninvited, but unknowingly compelled,
tones unheard would not have been peaceful
    and nights powers made us beg for our lives;
the town purred with morbid contentment,
moon and stars stroked its back,
between midnight and dawn we writhed,
the quiet town passively cursed us.

I was very pleased yesterday to find our poetry site had awarded Poem Of The Day to our collaboration.
I had written the title and the first half of the poem, shelved it for quite some time (to be finished later)and
then much later I decided to offer it to my very good friend Lawrence to finish as a collaboration.
He immediately accepted and readily agreed to compose the second half.
This I think is our 5th collaboration and from that number of poems I think 3 have been chosen as POTD.

Edit: This collaboration is also copyrighted under my name on my poetry page at our home poetry site. --Tyr

    Very nice, Robert!

I especially liked your last line,
“we pray dawn’s falling rays wake world’s all”.

I can definitely relate to those middle-of-the-night fears, and wishing fervently for dawn. Especially since the attack on my heart.

    Also, nice alliteration.

I beat ya to it my friend, both the heart attack and the night ticking problem. My heart attack was in 2011.
And yes dawn and its bright light always seemed to bring relief.
And mine began in earnest after the heart attack..
That last line I wrote, came directly from my having done just that far too many times to count.
I am glad that you caught the full depths of that verse! -Tyr

I am pleased and honored that so many of my collaborations have been chosen to be Poem Of The Day
at my home poetry site. Either chosen and posted under my name or under the name of my co-author.
A few dozen have been so chosen over the years and 98% of them were title and first written by me-as the
opening first half then offered to the poet I wanted to write the second half to finish the poem.
Which I have never been turned down on the offer unless the poet thought the poem was already too
complete to add their verses to it. That has happened with three or four poets that Ive since collaborated
    with many times over.
This most recent POTD honor comes very soon after the same honor of my poem with my dear friend
Lawrence Sharp, and our poem titled, "When Night Brings Its Stillness, Silence And Tick, Tick, Tick"...
