On May 15, 1934, when a heavy fog had engulfed the region the Lightship Nantucket (LV-112) lay anchored on station in 192 feet of water.

The RMS Olympic (sister of the infamous Titanic and Britannic vessels), traveling at a speed of 20 knots literally ran over the lightship on its broadside, cutting it in half. Boats were lowered from the Olympic in an attempt to save the Nantucket's crew, but only seven of the eleven men were rescued. One of the men (the Captain of the Lightship) died a few months later from his injuries.
