    Default Ohio GOP congressman dies

As if things weren't bad enough for the beleagured GOPs. Now an incumbent congressman has died, opening up another seat and an opportunity for the Dems.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor was found dead in his apartment Wednesday, a Republican leadership aide said.

The aide said the body of the 68-year-old Republican was found by staff members who went to his apartment after he failed to show up for work. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death. Gillmor's office did not respond to a reporter's call.

Gillmor, who represented Ohio's 5th District in the Bowling Green area of the state, was first elected to Congress in 1988.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.

Gillmor, who served as a judge advocate in the Air Force after graduating law school, won a seat in the Ohio state senate in 1966, and served there for 22 years, rising to the senate presidency. After an unsuccessful run for governor in 1986, Gillmor was elected to the U.S. House in 1988 after eking out a 27-vote victory in the primary.

As a House member was a little-known but solid Republican vote, and a reliable conservative on social issues.

He led legislative efforts in such areas as cleanups of commercially contaminated sites known as brownfields and enacting financial service reforms. He was also a strong advocate of a constitutional amendment to ban unfunded mandates on the states.

    What a disgusting post...
Instead of wondering what happened to the poor guy, or feeling sorry for their family...They are celebrating because it could mean a seat for their political party...I feel like I'm reading something right off of Duunderground...

It doesn't matter, they will appoint another Republican.

Oh, put a sock in it.

It's not like either of us knew him personally.

If you want to talk about grieving, I feel worse over the 3,800 young Americans who've lost their lives because our boy king took a notion into his head.

Reading his statement with a grain of intelligence leads you to understand that there was no "celebration" whatsoever.

Please........ you don't give a shit about our military personnel or for the Iraqi people either, it's just a way of using others to push forward that pathetic socialist party of yours...... be careful what you wish for, you may be very disappointed with the shit that drops all over your head.

Completely irrelevant. I'm referencing his post above, which does not have any "celebration" contained within whatsoever.

I would think ANY American would have better things to think about when hearing this rather an "open seat". Most would feel sad, sympathy for the family and have a desire for understanding of his death. The fact that you see it as an "opportunity" is appalling.

Speaking of intelligence, anyone with comprehension skills would see that an interest in an "open seat" is being opportunistic for a political advantage, which is a little too close to a celebration for my liking.

Nothing he said was incorrect or celebratory.

It is an opportunity for the Democrats, just like when people when Tim Johnson went into the hospital after the midterm election it was an opportunity for Republicans.

Yes, it was, and I would have scolded any republican here that jumped to speak about that before feeling the sadness of losing an American serving our country.

When you immediately look to the positive advantage democrats might get out of someone's death, to me that is a type of celebration. Out of all the ways one could possibly gain political advantage, or a seat, this would be the last anyone should want to see. And to hear someone IMMEDIATELY think of that when someone passes away is disgusting.

If you want to see glee, wait until January 20, 2009. I will be partying that night.

That's just shitty and untrue. I felt bad when Johnson got sick and I actually sent a get well card to his office. I never thought if something happened to him then we would have another seat, that is just wrong on so many levels. Just because their views are completly messed up doesn't mean we wish them dead, far from it actually.

Oh yea and if this is such a good thing for Democrats why are the Democratic Congressmen and Senators putting out emails in support of Gilmor?
