Default U.S. To Evacuate Americans Aboard Cruise Ship Quarantined At Japan Port

First question would be "Why?". Second question is why bring them within 8 miles of MY house? Send them to Jimbob's.

Might sound rather cold, but I say leave them on the ship until they are well or die. Bet if that was a US Navy ship full of Marines and Sailors we'd be getting an "extended" deployment and the safety of the community would be cited for letting us sit off the coast of CA forever.

    February 15, 2020
By Kiyoshi Takenaka and William Mallard
TOKYO (Reuters) – The United States said it would send an aircraft to Japan to bring back U.S. passengers on the quarantined cruise ship Diamond Princess, where the most coronavirus infections outside China have occurred.
The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said in a letter on Saturday to passengers that a chartered plane would arrive in Japan on Sunday evening and that it recommended “out of an abundance of caution” that U.S. citizens disembark and return home for further monitoring.

The passengers would be required to undergo further quarantine of 14 days upon arriving in the United States and if they choose not to return on the flight, they would not be able to return home “for a period of time”, the letter said.
“We understand this is frustrating and an adjustment, but these measures are consistent with the careful policies we have instituted to limit the potential spread of the disease,” it said.
It also said passengers would be screened before the flight and the U.S. government was working with Japan so that any people with symptoms would receive proper care if they could not board the plane.
Japan confirmed it was coordinating with the U.S. government for Americans to leave the ship and return home, saying that would ease its burden in resolving the situation.
Other countries might follow suit and ask to bring back their own citizens from the ship before the quarantine period ends next week, a Japanese government official told reporters.
The cruise ship, owned by Carnival Corp <CCL.N>, has been quarantined since arriving in Yokohama on Feb. 3, after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong before it traveled to Japan was diagnosed with the virus.
It had some 3,700 passengers and crew on board. Another 67 people have tested positive for the virus, Japanese Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said on Saturday, bringing the total to 285 cases. Those testing positive are transferred to Japanese hospitals.
Japanese public broadcaster NHK has reported that there were more than 400 U.S. citizens on board.
The cruise liner’s quarantine is set to end on Wednesday and while some passengers were disheartened at the prospect of more time in quarantine, others were more understanding.
“They are very concerned about spreading the virus, and there’s no good way to transport people from Japan without possible transfer of virus, so it is the logical thing to do,” Sawyer Smith, 25, told Reuters.
The plane will land at Travis Air Force Base in California and some passengers will then continue onward to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
The letter did not specify how long U.S. citizens who choose not to board the chartered flight might have to wait before they could return home, saying only that the final decision would be up to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ya know, when you compare the Flu to the Coronavirus, there's hundreds of thousands of cases of the Flu, in America, this year, and I heard something like 14,000 deaths so far, and it's still raging on at it's peak, so, why is this Coronavirus such a big deal?

I was listening to a doctor saying that between China and the US, this has all the makings of a repeat of the Spanish Flu of WWI times. I'm beginning to think of following SL in getting prepped for food at the minimum.

Hey, thanks for thinking of me buddy!!

And that is exactly what I was thinking. Bring them back and have them stationed far enough off-shore. Have help brought to them until they get the all clear. MAYBE bring folks back in one by one based on health releases.

Bring in another cruise ship. Anyone infected, quarantine them in half that ship as "known infected". And the other half - well they go to the "temporary morgue" on the other half. Safety arrangements must be made to bring the dead to get cremated and/or buried, if safe to do so. I can't imagine having a proper funeral for someone who is infected.

It sounds quite drastic but beats the alternative of bringing a 100 known folks and unknowns to a hospital and then finding out that the entire hospital is now sick - or worse - that an unknown amount were released that were infected, and they are located around the nation.

Having a "proper funeral" at sea is rather easy. Especially if you skip the Flag drape ceremony.

Y'all can imagine that if I get sick, I'll drive all the way to Ft Sam Houston before I'll step foot on Lackland AFB. I bet you dollars to donuts this is the deal (without looking):

Wilford Hall was the main hospital on Lackland for 50+ years. It is HUGE. Like 15 stories and 4 wings. I was born there. So they closed it because Brooke Army Medical Center on Ft Sam Houston was modern and relatively new. Only they didn't close it. Ft Sam used it as an overflow and/or specialist hospital to refer patients to. The powers that be decided it would cost too much to update Wilford Hall so instead built a new clinic next to it that active duty and retirees use. Only thing open at Wilford Hall I know of the ER.

I'm guessing they are going to quarantine these people in Wilford Hall. I'm sure they have kept it up to minimal standards and it's a perfect, isolated place for a medical quarantine. There's no reason for anyone to go there that doesn't belong there.

What your tax dollars paid for after cost over-run on our new clinic? A sorta hospital that cost more than bringing the old one up to date would have.

Without a doubt, finally the ijits on news are dropping the whole, "Well golly gee, look at flu deaths, move along."

The Dow is now negative for the year, today put is under, though it's been going down for awhile because of this.

China has taken extraordinary means, as only a controlled government can, but the numbers of sick and dying keep rising. Some of the means employed include immediately closing entire industries, making millions immediately unemployed. They are burning buildings they fear may harbor the virus. It's impossible to tell how many cities they've quarantined.

Italy has quarantined at least 4 towns in the north, Venice is on the radar. No one is quite sure of what's happening in Iran, though what they've released is not good.

South Korea, which has an excellent medical system, on par with the US, is currently having as high death rate as China, over 2%.

In spite of reports, there are still flights coming to US from China, many with stop overs in Europe. It seems there are problems getting the coordination going between HHS, HS, CDC, TSA...

Listening to Tucker tonight, suddenly concern about 'supply chain' with China-they produce much of our medicines, or the ingredients of such. If the sick keep rising in China, guess what is going to shut down? It's already being felt by some industries, ala Apple falling so deeply today.

They were talking about the one problem Trump faced was himself, but with the virus, if it keeps on its trajectory, it could be the economy by summer/fall. Bernie is all about 'HEALTH CARE' which could be #1 by then.

Doesn't getting passengers off that ship, evacuated to country-of-origin and placed in a secure environment where their virus can't spread to the population, make complete sense ?

The 'keep them on the ship until they're well, or die' approach, overlooks the fact that there might be many passengers who can be evacuated out of that environment before they manage to contract the virus. They win. Their loved ones win. They escape any consequences of a situation never of their making. Alternatively ... insisting that passengers be forced to remain on the ship might make their contracting it a lot more certain .. possibly killing people whose lives would've otherwise been saved.

Look at it this way. In the example, say, of a compound where Americans are surrounded by hostiles hell-bent on killing them, but where American troops can enter the scene and save many American lives by evacuating them out of there .. who, here, wouldn't applaud the saving of American lives ?

In the case of the ship, American lives can be saved from a 'hostile' virus. The means is available to ensure that its needless spread is prevented. So, what's different ? Shouldn't the saving of American lives be encouraged, and celebrated, when it can be ?

I'm glad that America has acted as it has. As for us Brits ... our own evacuation efforts have been borderline pathetic by comparison. Our own ship-bound people had video interviews with, for example, the BBC, via Internet links. Some of our people felt they were being abandoned to their fate, with no news forthcoming about an airlift, and there was much anger expressed. One man spoke bitterly about feeling his Government didn't care about him, because he was getting no news that gave him hope of an early rescue.

We (Brits) did eventually airlift some of our people out (and four of them did test 'positive' for the virus, only AFTER arriving on UK soil). The 'one man' I spoke of in the above paragraph couldn't be airlifted, as he'd contracted the virus on the ship and had to become Japan's responsibility.

Would he have avoided contracting it, had our people been quicker to airlift Brits out ? The impression left is that, yes, he probably would have.

We're now waiting to see if he'll survive ...

The Dow has been dipping and rising and dipping all morning. Now it's at -470.

It's one thing to say, 'Don't panic, it won't solve the problem. Prepare.' It's another to say, "In the US, we've got control over this virus." That will cause panic, as it's not possible and when it comes to things like this, people aren't all stupid. Now the CDC isn't even following their own guidelines in rating pandemics, at a point that the people do not trust the government. Who will the people blame?

Weird, now, a few minutes after writing the above, CDC just said, "There is likely to be direct impact on everyday life for us, if the virus continues its current progression. Plan to have some money and food put away, as supply and business openings could be effected." They warn against panic, but making plans.

Balancing 'safety first' and the 'economic fallout.' Choices will have to be made.

Wanted to add - how long before Trump gets blamed for the market conditions? You watch. A worldwide health crisis and he WILL get blamed somehow by some!
