Sanders roughed up, hits back in feisty Democratic debate
Charleston (United States) (AFP) - Democratic White House hopefuls rounded on leftist frontrunner Bernie Sanders at a feisty debate Tuesday, attacking him as too extreme for American voters and a flawed challenger to President Donald Trump.
Joe Biden, who needs a victory in South Carolina's crucial primary on Saturday to keep his campaign alive, hit Sanders as soft on gun control, while billionaire tycoon Michael Bloomberg claimed Russia was working to help Sanders win the nomination -- betting he would be defeated in November.
And Sanders' rivals joined in savaging the self-described democratic socialist as too radical to appeal to a broad swathe of Americans.
Fellow progressive Elizabeth Warren and centrists Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, all desperate to halt Sanders' momentum before it is too late, laid into his ability to deliver on costly programs such as universal health care and tuition-free college.
Buttigieg, a 38-year-old military veteran presenting himself as a unifier, warned a Sanders fight against Trump would spell "chaos" and divide the nation.
"I tell you what it adds up to," Buttigieg said, "it ends up as four more years of Donald Trump."

A Bernie slayer fails to emerge at Tuesday's debate
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Democrats had two chances to halt Bernie Sanders’ march toward the nomination after his triumph in Nevada: Tuesday night’s Democratic debate and the South Carolina primary on Saturday.
Now, they’re down to the South Carolina primary.
Twitter, which hosted the debate with CBS News, was an ideal sponsor, because the seven candidates on stage frequently seemed like a flame war political thread come to life. Debate moderators often found it difficult to keep the conversation from descending into extended crosstalk and shouting.
Joe Biden, whose debate performances previously had been characterized by his perplexing habit of stopping mid-sentence before his time expired, repeatedly scolded the moderators for leaving him out. Mike Bloomberg, who at times seemed to be casually watching the debate from the sideline last time, eagerly thrust his hand into the air and jumped into the fray more often this time. Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren, always the most eager to jump in, were as aggressive as ever. Amy Klobuchar and Tom Steyer, who often seem to get shorted at debates, repeatedly seemed frustrated about getting left out of key exchanges.
They all seemed more desperate and more manic during their final primetime chance to make the case against Sanders before a majority of delegates are chosen starting on Saturday and then on Super Tuesday.
That case against Sanders was clarified but not fully prosecuted. By the end, it was clear that there was no Bernie slayer at the lecterns in Charleston, someone who alone had the time and skills to convince Democratic voters that the democratic socialist was a radical whose nomination would forfeit the party’s chance to defeat Trump.

Moderators come under criticism online over contentious debate
The CBS News moderators came under fire on social media Tuesday as the Democratic presidential debate in South Carolina grew heated, with crosstalk often drowning them out.
Meghan McCain compared the debate’s atmosphere to the contentious discussions she faces on "The View," saying, "these moderators need to get this under control."
MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski asked, “Does CBS have a buzzer or something to organize this?” while the Twitter account for “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” poked fun at the often unintelligible crosstalk.
Former Democratic National Committee interim chairwoman and Fox News contributor Donna Brazile also addressed the moderation issues, tweeting, "Dear Madam Moderators: throw your shoes down. Get control."

‘What a Fiasco’: CBS News and Moderators Panned For ‘Disaster’ Debate
One of the clearest takeaways on social media throughout the South Carolina Democratic debate is CBS didn’t deliver the best show.
