Italy has the second oldest population on earth(remember older you are more likely its fatal). And those numbers are increased because many are those abandoned and left in nursing homes to die from the disease. Also other factors there greatly increased the death toll.
New York, millions huddled together using-- mass transit-- another mitigating factor in the higher infection count and higher death count..

Other nations are not showing a 10.8 % death count.. Check if you do not believe..

    Rolling Stone
Jackson Browne Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Jackson Browne was suspicious that something was not right when he started feeling ill in recent weeks. “As soon as I had a small cough and a temperature, I tested [for COVID-19],” he says. The Rock Hall of Fame inductee tells Rolling Stone that he has tested positive for the coronavirus and is currently recuperating at his Los Angeles home. “My symptoms are really pretty mild, so I don’t require any kind of medication and certainly not hospitalization or anything like that,” he adds.

The 71-year-old musician isn’t sure where he got it, but he suspected his recent trip to New York for the annual Love Rocks NYC benefit, which also featured Cyndi Lauper, Dave Matthews, Warren Haynes, Susan Tedeschi, and Derek Trucks, may have been the source. “So many people that have it aren’t going to be tested,” he says. “They don’t have symptoms, but they might have it and might be able to pass it on. That’s what younger readers need to understand: They need to take part in the global response to stop the spread. That means not going anywhere, not getting into contact with anybody, not seeing anybody.

The UK is following the same infection curve as Italy. Our people reckon our statistics will be as bad as Italy's currently are, in around 2-2.5 weeks from now - unless our current lockdown restrictions do a good job of starving the virus.

At least we can look at South Korea and Japan as countries that have already peaked and had a small amount of deaths.

.. and unlike 'ordinary' flu, people can be infected, have no symptoms and no awareness of being ill, yet, still infect others even as that is true.

Whether or not (I say it is, of course) Covid-19 is more pernicious in its effect, its ability to spread 'stealthily' makes it WAY more potentially deadly.

    But still....

The Total Number of Coronavirus Deaths to Date in the World Still Less Than Total Number of Flu Deaths in the US This Flu Season

The governments around the world have shut down the world economy for two months due to the coronavirus. These efforts which may have economic ramifications for years to come are in response to the Wuhan coronavirus which hasn’t yet killed as many people worldwide as the flu killed in America this year.

As we have reported several times now — the Director of the World Health Organization created an international panic when he miscalculated the coronavirus mortality rate at 3.4%.

The controversial Ethiopian politician and Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, claimed in a press conference in early March that the fatality rate for the coronavirus was many multiples that of the fatality rate of the common flu.

This egregiously false premise has led to the greatest economic panic in world history.

The Director General of the WHO spoke on March 3, 2020 and shared this related to the coronavirus:

While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.

Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.
Here is the video of Dr. Ghebreyesus’s remarks.

Big question is why the man deliberately gave out false and fearful numbers.
And yes, I believe it was a deliberate act on his part, and ordered by those that control he and the WHO.
As it caused chaos and massive fear worldwide -- and fear is always a monster motivator.
The lie still exists the death rate is not as high as is so often given out my media....
Yes it is an alarming and serious disease but very likely would not have shut entire nations down but for the first great lie told by the WHO..
If they had only cited that its highly contagious instead of saying that and lying about the death rate, we would not be seeing this disastrous domino effect of so many nations shutting down, imho.--- -Tyr

    The UK's example defies this.

Our Government's original approach was shaped after the WHO's original pronouncements and data. It was to attempt a 'herd immunity' effect, which necessitated NOT applying a nationwide lockdown.

But, because of how this virus has hit us, how it is in particular that the trend of infection is mirroring Italy's, as Italy stood, around 2 weeks ago .. our Government realised that its spread would be uncontrollable unless far more stringent rules were applied.

So it is that we're under a near-total lockdown for a minimum 3 week period.

The fact of the matter is that constantly revised data, updated daily, convinced our Government that they had to exercise far greater controls. It was either that, or risk many thousands of additional deaths.

I do not believe that the rapidly escalating numbers of deaths being reported are lies. This is a dangerous pandemic, and the circumstances of it are such that harsh, draconian social controls are the only real weapon we have against it (unless a vaccine will appear within days ??). It's either that, or, allowing avoidable mass death to occur.

I know with all things equal that everyone is in this together. I think places that are much much lower than the others very well still may see their own increases. I'm not ignoring any part of our nation! But I'm still overly concerned with where I live. Not only did NYC see another large increase, but my county got another 1250+ cases.

I can't do too awfully much but maybe drive around. Today I did a lot more than before. WTF - NO ONE is listening in my county, which is seemingly still hit harder than any other entire state in the nation. Ok, not true, just looked again and now the entire state of NJ has more cases than my county, but that's it. -- anyway, almost every damn store is still open now except for the mom and pop type stores. Marshalls, Microcenter, Best Buy, Mcdonalds, D&D, Staples, damn car wash places... I mean, literally every place that wanted to seemed like they opened. I did see some signs that customers are being limited per time, but still. I thought it was supposed to be essential only, and "all" non-essential closed. NOT the case here where we are hit the hardest. And way too many idiots out there together, as in one place was limiting customers, so it looked like about 40 outside, and all of the idiots were in one big group. No wonder my area is so fucked up. And NO, I only do driving around out of boredom. I don't need to take chances and hit all of these open stores. Unbelievable.
