Funny side story: Yesterday, a guy was telling me that Galileo was speaking out against the best scientists of the day. When I said he was actually speaking out against the church and a theological idea from the Bible..... he stood firm that science and religion were the same thing during that time.

But Here's the odd thing Jake, If you look at the real history and not just atheist memes you'll find out that,
the Roman Catholic Church had accepted the Ptolemaic view of the universe. the Scientific (and False) view of the day.

"Ptolemaic system, also called geocentric system or geocentric model, mathematical model of the universe formulated by the Alexandrian astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy about 150 BC and recorded by him in his Almagest and Planetary Hypotheses. The Ptolemaic system is a geocentric cosmology; that is, it starts by assuming that Earth is stationary and at the centre of the universe. The “natural” expectation for ancient societies was that the heavenly bodies (Sun, Moon, planets, and stars) must travel in uniform motion along the most “perfect” path possible, a circle. However, the paths of the Sun, Moon, and planets as observed from Earth are not circular. Galileo was fighting the Ptolemaic system.
The guy you were talking to was basically right. The Church had latched on to the then accepted "scientific" Ptolemaic view and wrongly assumed it as fact.... truth.
The Scientist of the day WERE against Galileo so was the R C Church .. and some of the the priest were in fact scientist.
BTW Galileo, along with many other scientist of the day, were Roman Catholic or Christians of some kind as well.

the idea that Galileo had to "fight" bad ol Church doctrine is one of those false things from pop "history".
Like "Washington chopped down the cherry tree", And everyone in Europe thought the world was flat before Columbus.
